  1. Olham: I ran into this problem in Phase 1 a few years ago. Check to see if you have a font called Palatino Linotype (I think that was the culprit) If you don't have that on your system it can mess up the type spacing, etc. in OFF Mine was accidentally erased and as soon as I reinstalled it all was well in OFF.
  2. waited since 1983

Olham: You've had such good ideas, and now this home town map.. what a great idea. A big thank you!
  3. To easy?

Maybe you just experienced a stroke of good luck for awhile. Most of the others here, almost all of whom have flown sims for many years don't experience your type of star ace status, especially not in OFF BHH, least not for very long.
  4. Did you really make that? It was great, can't wait to see more! How about some about the war between ROF and OFF.. that would be interesting.. maybe it would lighten up things on the forums if they could laugh about it a bit?
  5. Reason for screen name....

Yes, I was familiar with 'uber' ..have no idea how to put the dots above the 'u' though. In Old High German it was 'ubar,' with an 'a' or maybe that was slang? (click here) I read some place else that instead of uber, ober is preferred, ie oberleutnant instead of uberleutnant? Anyway, ubar is better then fubar and rabu is better then rabuf.. i guess. In RedBaron II and 3d the palettes were so limited in colors that you had to be very careful of the palette colors you used in the terrain tiles, plane skins, or elsewhere, or they would glow in dawn/dusk, night, or other low light situations in the game and look really odd. And the only way you could be sure was to fly in the game each time and check it out.. really a frustrating, as well as extremely time consuming process. I used some of these "glow" pixels in my OTE terrain tiles for RB3d and the Hell's Angels terrain to advantage to create the look of runway lights and faint lights of farm houses, lights on ships, etc., below while flying in the game (Off doesn't have any of these problems, using a full RGB palette.)
  6. Reason for screen name....

rabu ubar spelled backwards.. Old High German for Above, ..also a lost city, but not sure what that has to do with it. The non F acronym for, Up Beyond All Repair ..after the extreme frustration, many years ago, of creating plane skins in RebBaron, only to have them full of glow pixels upon taking them up in flight.
  7. Steve: That sounds great! Let us know how the show goes and take some pix. A big S! to you, and thanks.
  8. Very funny... not sure if it was a put down of OFF or a recommendation, after seeing all the easy kill posts on ROF. I happened to have just watched a DVD of the film Valkyrie tonight, amazing, true story. I often wonder if it would have had any affect on the war if the assassination had been successful?
  9. Hitting pilots and jumping out

He's not holding his chute strings, he's reaching for his last Camel.
  10. Knights of the Sky series

Excellent film, thanks! They actually said it was 11 days, but that still sounds like a lot longer then 17 hours. Does any one remember where the 17 hour phrase came from.. maybe it was for the French?
  11. What nationality are you?

Really interesting guys! Bullethead: There's a gypsy in every group, welcome, but where do you live, Australia?
  12. What nationality are you?

Sorry, Olham, I was trying to be funny too. We have one chain of fast foods that actually is really good, "In and Out Burgers" and another one called "Fat Burger" that are great fro burgers, but it seems like most of the time I'm fighting mid rif bulge so I avoid them. There is also "RG Burgers," but they are more expensive. There is also an excellent Sushi restaurant within walking distance of our store called, "Robata Grill and Saki Bar," in the Barnyard shopping center. I'm not a Sushi fanatac though, just ocassionally visit.
  13. First Eagles, Over Flanders Fields

I'm not trying to debate whose sim is better, as you put it. I've said over and over again that both have a lot to offer, but in differnt ways. I just don't like OFF being discredited and put down with untrue exaggerations about it's sim status or worth, that just isn't right. I've never taken that attitude toward ROF or made cutting remarks in that manner. There is a huge differenc between pointing out what one thinks are problems in a sim that need to be adressed as opposed to dismissing a sim as arcade because it's flight model isn't as good as another, etc. One is constructive critism, the other is vendictive attacks, that's why I reacted with my post. This theread is for opinions about each sim, not put downs, lets keep it in that direction. OFF, FE and ROF each have unique and real sim experiences and I'm glad each has made it this far.
  14. First Eagles, Over Flanders Fields

Just your opinion, we have lots of other players of OFF BHH, many of whom are pilots, who would disagree with you completely. It's true that ROF has a lot more attention given to the flight model and it is excellent. But ROF is missing the whole other side of the experience of being in the WWI environment, the dynamic campaign and feeling of being there. That's why your put downs of OFF as being to easy don't make any sense when you see all the feedback on the ROF forum citing all the AI kills in ROF that are so easy. This just doesn't happen in OFF, nor did it happen in WWI. It's because the AI in OFF is much more difficult. I'm sure ROF will improve, but until they can make drastic changes to their campaign engine, and in other areas, they are going to continue to feel scripted and empty. This has been pointed out by quite a few players, it isn't just me saying it. Again, you go over board with your comments by saying that OFF `isn't remotely realistic,' it is, and it's extremely involving, you have to look at the whole picture, not just one aspect of a sim. At this point each has its advantages and disadvantages. I'm sure ROF will improve, I've stated that over and over. Meanwhile, OFF will improve too, they have recently made major improvements to problems that were really irritating, like in cloud turbulance, etc. and they will also continue to improve. This isn't a contest though, BW, it's simply, two excellent WWI flight sims, each offering an incredible experience to anyone willing to give them a try. There is room for both on anyone's hard drive, unless one is only interested in a narrow part of a sim experience, like only the fm, or only the campaign, etc. OFF is still the best all inclusive expereince that is available at this point. Hopefully ROF will catch up in time. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying both of them.
  15. Looks like you made the desk? Very inventive. It's interesting seeing what everyone has come up with for their control arrangements and I see a lot have foot pedals, do they make a big difference over a twist stick? The one setup with the joystick in the center on a backless chair looks like it would be very stable and work well and being centered between your legs would feel more realistic but I think with that setup I would need a separate control module for throttle, etc. on the left.
  16. What nationality are you?

That's 1 degree of separation, not six. And for me, it would have to be 180 degrees of separation.. can't stand fast food anymore, or instant coffee, etc. About 30 years ago I discovered real food and there's no going back.
  17. Post a pic of your town

Are you sure that isn't Water Lilies by Claude Monet?
  18. Filming

You can use fraps with any other game, but you don't need it to play a game.
  19. First Eagles, Over Flanders Fields

Your opinions really don't carry much weight anymore. You are always contradicting yourself and your constant put downs of OFF are getting really tiresome and obvious. I'm going to quote you so others can get an idea of what you are all about. I don't know what this hatred is of me and OFF but it's really getting out of hand. I've constructively criticized things in ROF that I think need improvement, but have always said why and I've always pointed out the very positive things about ROF and the obvious fact that it's early and things will undoubtedly improve. But some things in ROF I feel are real problems and I'm not sure they can get beyond them and am surprised they won't address the many complaints with some answers or reassurances. Awhile back on the ROF forum you were putting down OFF saying that it was way to easy to shoot down the AI planes etc. and there fore should not be taken seriously as a WWI flight sim. You said, "People who like this sort of sim are people who like other hard core sims such as Blackshark, some of the Janes series, Falcon 4, Microsoft civilian simulators (yes, when you use it properly, it's a study sim), and the lockon series. There are more but these are just a short list. Anyway, if flown with realism configuration at it's highest, it's not a sim you're going to fly and shoot down 5 enemies (or more) per mission like OFF, but a more realistic one where you will probably die trying to do so." (post 2757573) Why didn't you comment on this following thread on the ROF forum to compare your shooting skills in ROF. From the ROF comments below, if you were so good in OFF, or if it was so easy to shoot down AI in OFF and is so arcade as you suggested, you must be spectacular against the AI in ROF! Just look at these comments on the SimHQ ROF forum about their records after it has only been out a week: (Thread "1 to 1 record") "I got up to 7 kills using DVII. Can anyone do better? Settings - Full real. " "8 in the DVII. 5 in the Spad" "On my 3rd try I got up to 13 in the Spad. Only tried the DVII once and just got two." "On full realism settings, with all the limitations on ammo and all, I average between five and six machines, before I run out of ammo, per play of the 1 VS 1 scenario, for the DVII. I will definitely try for more." "I got up to 11 with DVII. Full real settings." "I just scored 19 kills in 1 vs. 1, flying the Fokker DVII, full real setting and all the limitations in place. I had to stop because I ran out of ammo." "Well I tried again before going to bed last night and I managed to get 13 again before one of those pesky rear gunners ended my run!" "My record so far is only 3 aircraft wiht full realims and limited ammo (Fokker D.VII). Then again I only got my game this morning, so tomorrow I propaly have more than that" "Well I tried again before going to bed last night and I managed to get 13 again before one of those pesky rear gunners ended my run! I definitely need better tactics with those guys." Something is definitely wrong here and totaly unrealistic.. not sim quality at all. Historically, these guys would be dead, or in OFF they would be dead.. I've been following the accounts in OFF and no one has been able to get kills like these accounts in ROF. But, maybe ROF just needs improvements, like it does in so many other areas? Nothing wrong with that and I will give them the benefit of waiting for the improvements, because I see so much potential in ROF, but I still think OFF BHH has a lot more to offer at this point, and yes, it is one heck of a real WWI flight sim, and so is ROF. I'm really getting sick and tired of your constant attacks on me and OFF, so here's some of your recent OFF bashing on the ROF forum at SimHQ, quotes of you with links, nothing taken out of context: You said, "this is a simulator, not an arcade game" and that gets some folks very mad.", (post 2764888) etc. Another ROF customer, CamelJockey was really unhappy with the game and wanted to sell it. He found out that you can't sell ROF because it only works for the original buyer and ROF wouldn't give him a refund of his $40. CJ was obviously unhappy and complaining, you jumped in and this was your comment: "I can only roll my eyes at these OFF head comments. Sheesh, will it ever end? Well, I received my copy yesterday, installed it, and enjoying the heck out of it. It's pretty simple, this ain't an arcade game. It's a FLIGHT SIMULATOR. I can understand that folks who like arcadish "flight simulators" may find ROF a bit too challenging to get enjoyment out of it. I say to those folks, turn down the realism or go play a simpler game like OFF." (post 2757239) More: "I should expect to get attacked after saying that OFF is an arcade game. What was I thinking? I'm still firm in that there is no comparison between OFF and ROF in terms of "flight simulation". (post 2757859) Your reply to a player having server problems with ROF and noticing aircraft spawning instantly, Your reply: "Not true for ROF. I think the guy is talking about CFS3 or OFF." (Post 2757261) Again, saying OFF is not a serious simulator: "I'm sure OFF is a nice game and there is definately a loyal following. A game, yes. Simulator (in the hard core sense) no. Sorry, it's just not in the same class as ROF. It's like comparing Comanche from Novalogic to Blackshark from Eagle Dynamics.... a totally different ballgame." (post 2757290) You have a real problem and I really think you need to just get cool down. I really like ROF and want them to be successful. I don't mention things that are problems simply to put them down or say that they are not worth buying, yet you seem determined to bash OFF and make negative comments about it, most of them untrue or exaggerated. Why don't you just lighten up and enjoy both of these sims.. they are both WWI sims, each with a lot to offer. If you don't like OFF BHH, fine, but don't throw out criticisms that are off base, untrue or exaggerated, obviously hostile and vindictive.
  20. Yea, I'm surprised we haven't seen that yet! Really nice setups, everyone. Some of you have some really fancy equipment.. pedals, throttle controls, etc. I've only got an old MS Sidewinder Precesion 2 and Track IR3, but OFF looks great on this screen and sounds incredible.
  21. Well I'll be doggone!

First off would be the communication problem, I would think?
  22. Here's my setup. Home built computer. I do graphics work so I need desk space. The pull out drawer hold my keyboard, mouse, stick and my Wacom tablet. On the left is my HP wide format printer. The 22" monitor is on an arm so I can turn it around to face the drafting table back to back to the computer desk. Below the monitor is an old Nakamichi ZX7 that I've been using to slowly get my hundreds of cassettes transferred over to digital files. On the right is an Epson scanner and the speakers are Klipsch THX 2.5 Here's a shot of the adjustable monitor arm.. really usefull I built two shelves on each side of the desk to hold the Klipsch woofer, modem, back up battery, back up hard drives and the computer case. It's a rat's nest of wires under there! Getting them off the floor solves the dust problem and saves me valuable desk top space. I open up the case and dust it out about once a year. Left side: and right side:
  23. Very interesting, why do you need more then one computer? I'm just curious, it's very interesting to see how everyone has their setups.
  24. Interesting.. why do you guys have your case on the desk, why not on the floor, out of the way so you have more desk room?
