  1. Where's Uncleal?

Ahh.. interesting.. have never seen this before, and how do you know how many votes caused this reputation number.. where does it come from? I never really looked at it till now Do people actually vote negative votes against members.. how does this work?
  2. I'm not sure about that, Cecil Lewis recounted how he and others got to fly an Eindecker that landed on the wrong side and was captured intact in early 1916. He said that the rumor had it that it had fantastic performance, that it could out climb, out maneuver, out turn anything in the RFC. They first took it up, side by side with a Morane Bullet to compare them.. they "both took off together and it was immediately clear the the Morane was all over the Fokker. It climbed quicker, it was faster on the level, and when the two machines began a mock fight over the aerodrome, the Morane had everything its own way" They then compared it against a Morane biplane and the Parasol (mono wing), a Nieuport 11, and a Be2c.. "all of them gave quite a good account of themselves except the 2c, which, in performance, was nowhere." I've also read that with all the wires the EIII had tremendous drag and so was slower and had poor performance. William Green (Color Profiles WWI Combat Planes) said it was slow, 97mph at sea level, 78 at 3000m, climed slolwely, taking 30 minutes to reach 3000M, and it had horrable performance at altitude.. at its 3000M ceiling "maneuverability was virtually nil."
  3. Yea, it's interesting, Pol. A year ago you couldn't get into any part of ROF to do any mods, now they have opened up quite a bit ot it to the public for mods, but they are keeping a very tight control on it. The main reason, is for multiplayer compatibility, but I think it's also so they have no competition for sales of their add ons which are supporting their continual work on ROF. You can now unpack all the graphics archives and do mods, but they can only be used in game when a "mods on" has been allowed. Also, things like skinning are sort of cookie-cutter affairs with not much talent required from a novice skinner. Basically they have all their plane skin dds files in Photoshop psd file format with layers, a "mapping" layer shows outlines and positions, a base color layer with insignia on it, a "Draw Here" layer for the "skinner" to play with, and a group layer that has all the weathering, shadow lines, lighting, etc. Almost any one can jump right in and turn out a "custom" skin and it will look good, since the original ROF team skinners did all the hard work of mapping them to the models and added the most difficult parts like the weathering, etc., (Like we did in OFF) all the stuff in the group layer. . It's a good, free way to get all the skins they are missing while also allowing non historical skins and they have them for down load grouped that way too. They are even considering a Zepplin model being made by a non team member.
  4. It all kicked off today

I always liked the Time/Life book on the Air war of WWI, "Knights of the Air." It's got great art work and it's well written by Ezra Bowen. Also, "World War I" by H.P. Willmott is excellent and filled with historical photos. You can frequently find the Bowen book on sale for only a few dollars at major book chains or on line. Both are coffee table book size. Another book I picked up on sale about a year ago is a large 10x14" book of maps, "The West Point Atlas of World War I" It's chronological list with each map accompanied by a page of description of what was going on at that key point or battle.
  5. Yep, there are some problem visuals like that, but to me, they really aren't that noticeable and you get used to them quickly. And, you have to look at the whole picture... the combination of the living campaign, along with the historical weather, accurate time frames, the huge assortment of available planes and skins (scouts and reconnaissance), the historic videos and updates, all of it works as a whole experience. I think too many people who try OFF never get into the campaign and tend to not experience the whole effect.. it's something that no other WWI flight sim can touch... ROF keeps improving graphics and adding planes, but there is a huge gap.. I hope they can fill it and I will continue to support their efforts, but it's hard to imagine how they can catch up to OFF in all these important aspects.
  6. XP Pro 32bit SP3 and it runs great, especially since upgrading my video card from an old 8800 gts 320mb to a reasonably priced GTS 250 1GB I also added a couple of sticks of RAM for very little $ so I now have 4GB of PC2-6400 800MHz installed (yea, I know, XP can only use 3GB, but I may next get Windows 7) still using my dual core 2.4GHz processor. Just did all this recently, so am still experimenting with settings in OFF.
  7. Pol, I was talking about NaturalPoint not putting up any of the submitted videos in the past, not the team working on OFF. I just don't understand why it has taken them (NaturalPoint) so long to get around to accepting videos to show on their site.
  8. Please don't miss understand me... there have been other, earlier, excellent videos besides Hellshades, I just don't understand why they haven't accepted any in the past for showing. Anyway, glad there are some excellent ones now! Cheers!
  9. :salute:Can't believe it's taken this long to get some videos on their site. Thais was brought up over a year ago and nothing was doen.. Well done, HS!
  10. Again, this looks great, but maybe fade the ending out and then a brief blurb on TrackIR and OFF? You could maybe fade it out to one of the OFF splash screens with the text overlayed, or something similar? You really seem to have gotten rid of the video tears, I haven't noticed any at all!
  11. Heehee! Fantastic.. but maybe fade out that last scene at the end? I like it!
  12. OK, what plane and model is this and year and gun used and where was it used? Anything else to add?
  13. Thanks, HS, I hope some others see this.
  14. Hellshade:" Did I miss something? How did you get rid of the video tearing? It might benefit all of us.
  15. Ya, I know, I just think some of these are so interesting though. BTW, the Russians ended up getting the Tri-Noop.. did that lead to their revolution?
  16. Actually, I rememberd seeing it one of my books on the Noops and found it in the Osprey Nieuport Aces book... I guess that's cheating, my memory doesn't work at all that well. I'll try to find something really hard, but you guys are finding things I've never seen.. and that triplane was in the Wings of War game and I thought it was made up.... amazing! Well?
  17. Noop 11 N1324, Esc N35, shot down 6 July 1916 Kurt Student
  18. :good:Hellshade, the terrain looks great and I didn't notice any video screen tearing in these, even though they were filmed in bright day light.. did you find some solution? As usual, great flying and filming, btw
  19. Yep, Voisin type 3, but the date is important too. Any guesses? Oh, well, I'll just spill it. It was V1221 from Escadrille VB108 (sounds strange, but that's the info I have) It was Berthold's first victory on February 2, 1916.
  20. Sorry. Louvert.. so my Mattel guess was wrong, should have known you would come up witht the answer.
  21. Yes, French Voisin, very good!
  22. HS, that was excellent! Very helpful dog fight suggestions and tutorial. Thanks!
  23. OK, smartypants.. what is this one? And, RAF Louvert, you stay out of this, you're too smart! Another BIG hint, February 2nd 1916 And, no one has guessed what Bulletheads is! (I may be wrong about Mattel)
