I Don't Know Anymore Which is the Best WWI Sim!
rabu replied to ThePlainsman's topic in WWI Flight Sim Discussion
I can't comment on FE as I never got into it, mainly because I think the graphics are so much better in OFF and in ROF. You left out RedBaron 3d - Hell's Angels, which was as good as or better then FCJ, depending on your view, they were both great, but are now so dated they look like dos games. At this point I vote for OFF because I think it still has so much more to offer.. the full "Living Campaign" the huge assortment of planes and skins, the wonderful historical data with films, etc. ROF has got a ways to go to catch up to all that, but I fly both and enjoy both, each in a different way. -
I support both ROF and OFF. Obviously, having helped with OFF as a former team member, my heart is with OFF as it's a non commercial development with a main goal to carry on where RedBaron left off, but I'm sure ROF's intentions are the same.... thank god they haven't commercially copped out yet like many of the other possibles that have come along over the years but couldn't make it. I wish them all the best of luck and I hope everyhone will help support them as well as OFF. It's a small investment to make in either of them or for both of them. I have fun going back and forth.. I fly OFF for the history and immersion of the campaign and the huge content of planes in all periods of the war. I then go over to ROF for the newer eye candy and a very convincing flight model, though I can't say it is better then OFF, it's different. My problem with ROF at this point is system resources, I'm apparently on the minimum edge to play it and I have crashes, but I'm still experimenting with the settings and may just have to turn them down more. Anyway, I hope both do well and salute the efforts of those who have made them available for us.

#17.. Wozers! ..that guy jumping out in the first part and the close call later.. don't know how you seem to catch these... are you bribing those guys in the AI planes to follow a script? Yes, the text is MUCH better.. maybe it was the bright yellow and blue before that was so distracting. Have you thought of trying to do voice overs instead of text? It's sort of like watching a foreign movie with subtitles because your eyes have to keep looking at the titles and you feel like you're missing the video part. You can pick up a microphone pretty cheaply and connect it to your sound card and then, after editing the video, go back and do a voice over following a written script. I think it would be a huge addition to the videos.. unless you have a squeaky voice! But if you can't, no problem, they are really to be enjoyed as is. On a different subject.. has anyone noticed how, when you insert an emotom, it doesn't end up where you insert it. IE: I'm going to put this:bye: waving guy right after the end of this sentence and leave it where it inserts.. here we go, putting it in here: -

Hellshade: I think your recording at 1080p has had a huge effect on the response to the videos, along with putting them in a rightly deserved video sticky section. Best advertising that could have been done.. along with YouTube exposure and posting the links on other forums there has been a significant increase in interest in OFF. I'm glad most here went along with creating the video section, it's obviously been a hit. I want to thank you and all the others contributing to these. For anyone else, if you can do it, record them at 1080p or at least at 720p, it really makes a huge difference when you watch them full screen and also shows those not familiar with OFF what it can do. Cheers everyone! -

If you didn't have tags on I don't know how you would be able to identify anything.. wonder how they did it back then if it wasn't a bright moon? -
It's a whole data base outside of CFS3 that uses the basic CFS3 engine to handle the flight model, terrain management, etc. My understanding is that almost all of the game functions are pretty much outside of CFS3, unlike the older WWII mods which used the CFS3 campaign program and just altered it.

That plane explosion was fantastic! What are the chances of ever seeing something like that happen again? Was this a night mission? The only thing I didn't like was the new text style, to me, it stands out too much and is sort of distracting, but that just may be me.. as usual, your filming is amazing and I love the narration. Thanks, -
I've been using TrackIR5 for awhile and I've discovered the biggest problem is having it too close or not centered on your head which can cause problems especially when you look up or down and suddenly it can't track and you loose control of your view, or it gets jerky. I had my TIR clipped to the top of my 22" LCD monitor which is on an adjustable arm clamped to my computer desk. When I'm sitting and working at the computer the ideal distance for the screen is about 18"-24" in front of me. Text is sharpest and in a game I get the full impact of the screen image. Problem is, the TIR is way to close and if I push the screen back further I don't enjoy the full impact of the screen image being closer. OF course, if you have a huge 30" or bigger monitor it could sit far enough back so the TIR can just clamp onto the monitor, but 24" or smaller monitors this is a great solution. took an old clamp that was used to hold a chair umbrella and clamped it onto my display pivot arm and then attached the TIR to the top of the clamp arm. It sits about 1 foot behind the front of the screen and just above it. The improvement has been amazing.. much smoother viewing and I don't loose the view looking down or up anymore. If you have something you can clamp onto behind your screen this works really well and you could use one of those clamp on desk lights.. just remove the cord and light fixture part and improvise. Or you could use a small, inexpensive tripod easel or camera tripod in much the same way. Below are pictures of my setup: My screen view with the TIR unit sitting about 12" behind the screen face.. hehe.. anyone recognize this "sim?" Have fun

Nice ones.. in the 2nd one you finally got nailed! What's the bail out key? -
Ahh.. I remember now, you posted pix of this several months ago.. what a find; A beauty! Now all you need is a wicker chair!

I have an extra copy of CFS3 for any new players who don't yet have CFS3 and want to buy and install OFF. It's the older 2 cD set in CD jacket and includes the booklet and Key card. Works perfectly. When you install OFF you will have to install this first, update it to v3.1 then install OFF. All I want is postage coverage, so PM me.

Yea, the engine flying off was amazing, have never seen that before and I love the old time look. Can you make some like Helshade's, in high definition? -
Welcome GH: You might want to see my parallel post about TrackIR setup, it's very important. I had TIR3 with the vector software and it worked fine and had the same 6 degrees of views. I now have TIR5 with the same physical ball cap reflector and it may be a bit smoother then the old one, but either one will work fine, so TIR4 shoud be fine too. From what I have heard from many owners, the diode clip has no advantage over the older ball cap reflector, unless you have very contrasty lighting in your room.

I agree, sounds great, can you take some pix and post them here?
