THE VINTAGE AVIATOR AIRSHOW 2010 in HD Part Two
rabu replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I didn't even think about that, you're right, and I've seen that before where wheels seem to be turning in the opposite direction. -
Good ideas, along with oil on your wind screen or face that starts blocking the view, then maybe a hot key that will wipe it away leaving smears but some vision?

The old standby, having the screen go red has always worked pretty well, starting from back in the RedBaron days. I also remember having fun recording my own voice sound versions of hard G grunts, pilots being hit, etc.

THE VINTAGE AVIATOR AIRSHOW 2010 in HD Part Two

Thanks, Olham! Any one notice how slow those props rotate on most of the planes.. I had never thought about it, but the engine RPS really weren't very fast. -
I've gotta go with WM on this one. There is no way I'm going to start living my live in paranoid mode. I take simple precautions, don't put myself in bad situations and I stay aware of things going on around me, but I am not going to start worring about the extremely slim chance of something like you mentioned happening. I guess I also believe that we all have our time to go. I'm also glad that we haven't sunk down to vigilante law, how ever bad the circumstances seem, that's going in the wrong direction too, IMHO. What happened was horrible and I feel for the family as well as what you had to go through, good luck with all of this.

OT: I Know It's Not OFF, But Still...
rabu replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Some day I look forward to seeing good animated shore line waves and breakers. As in this sim, the ocean looks really good and the color change nicely as it gets shallow, but then the really strange white area, which just looks really bad.. it would have looked better just leaving it out. -

rabu replied to rabu's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
They will deliver world wide... I ordered this single issue delivered to the USA.. fairly expensive, but looks to be worth it. -
Carefull guy.. violence may be acceptable, but anything sexual is really treading on thin ice!

Absolutely! ..thanks, Pol -
There are a lot of good points being made here, for and against gore, mostly for, it seems. What's interesting is, I suddenly remembered a long time ago, back in the RedBaron Delphi forum days, back in the early 90's. I distinctly remember a post by some one who suggested having blood spatter on the wind screen as a desired addition to RedBaron. The back lash against this poor guy was a unanimous NO.. it was sort of an insulting and demeaning NO as well. Sort of like saying, we don't want any cheap arcade stuff in our "serious" sim. Even though, to be authentic, it probably would have been accurate to have blood spatters and other gore end up in ones face. I think that what is most interesting is that in the last 20 years the opinion seems to have shifted away from such an attitude, and now it seem there is just the opposite; now there is this unanimous support and even joking about gore and blood and the shoe seems to be on the other foot. So what has happened, have we been slowly weaned on gore over the years to accept it with out wincing or feeling anything is disturbing? I'm in no way putting any one down, it's just that I still feel, deep in side that something is not right here. When I first saw Pulp Fiction in 94', my wife and I walked out of the theater at the car scene where the guy is shot in the face and it is made to seem funny. I saw the movie again several months ago on TV and it didn't seem as bad as I had remembered, I was able to watch the whole movie.. what does this say, anything at all? I really don't know, except that the more we support this stuff the more it sells . But maybe I'm just over reacting..

Hay, Stingray, Used to live in Astoria in an old house on Grand Ave that I remodeled; wonderful river views. We were there when they were filming Kindagarden Cop and were extras but never made it into the final film footage. After 5 years of the rain we finally left though.. Small world!

RoF 'Hat in the Ring' expansion
rabu replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Winder, you've done an incredible job, no doubt about it. Whether it's a "Living World" (didn't know you `coined` that phrase) or "Living Campaign," I think they both do justice to describing OFF's campaign, which is one of it's most unique and desirable qualities. Just as I "coined" the word "immersion" to describe OFF several years ago..that word has also stuck around because it's so true. OFF is a very special gem of a sim that reflects a lot of hard work by many who believed in it and helped in creating it, and you have, especially, done that and have also been able to bring it together and keep it going. I'm looking forward to more in the next phase.. pretty amazing stuff! Thank you! -
RoF 'Hat in the Ring' expansion
rabu replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I agree, though I never thought of it quite like that before! -
I agree, I think in most cases it doesn't cause violence. My concern is what are we doing to young peoples outlook and sensitivity. Are we bringing up a generation of kids who are so exposed to violence that they become cold to it? When I see some guy in the news who has been shot trying to help someone else, is lying in the gutter and people walk by him, even take a cell phone picture, yet don't try to help, don't even call the police, it really makes me wonder if people are becoming desensitized to all the violence around us in the news, in movies, on TV, in video games, etc. (I didn't make this up, it seems to happen more and more). Does a game have to stress gore and shove it in your face to be effective? Should we have blood splatter on the wind screen along with brains in order to have a better time with OFF?

RoF 'Hat in the Ring' expansion

Pat Wilson, has been working long and hard on bringing a historical campaign to ROF. It uses scripted missions, but with some dice throws for who is where, from what I understand. I still don't think it comes anywhere close to OFF or RedBaron's "Living" campaign though. I say "Living" because there has been criticism that the OFF campaign is not "Dynamic" in the sense that what you do doesn't affect the outcome of the war, etc. Big deal, but that seems to be the criticism in then claiming that it isn't really "Dynamic." What they seem to ignore is that everything around you in the campaign is alive, things are happening historically... battles, raids, etc., but they aren't scripted in them selves. Pol or Shredward, or some one please correct me if I'm wrong, or clarify this more. I really do think we might be better off calling the campaign in OFF a Historical "Living Campaign." ..has a nice ring to it. The big thing with ROF that stands out is the graphics qualities in some areas.. Damage modeling is excellent for most situations. The lighting is pretty amazing with moving shadows as planes fly, reflective surfaces, water reflections and transparency, etc. Animated details in the CP are impressive with moving recoil MG levers, dials, etc. Even the pilots are animated turning their heads, giving arm gestures, etc. On the other hand, the scenery varies in quality and has a sort of too clean, too pristine look. Rivers have been improved from early on when I noted they were way to blue, but they still just look too clean, don't know how else to say it. The trenches are still a really weak point with odd zig zag lines and abrupt transition from trench areas to country side. Most seem really impressed with the flight model and boast about it a lot.. I have no idea, not being a pilot, seems like OFF is pretty spectacular, but I have no way to compare them. The multi player seems to be the big advantage and what a lot of the players there are interested in, but it's still being worked on, from what I understand, and still has problems... and I don't play MP, so again, can't comment. I always urge everyone to support any one's efforts, commercial or not, it's what gets us ahead in the WWI flight sim community. I don't play ROF that much, I prefer OFF more when I do have time to fly, but I've been buying the ROF planes and bought the game when it came out and I wish them best of luck and hope they can improve things, as they seem to be doing. Nuff` rambling, gotta go to work.. -
Video Tearing in OFF - Who has it, Who doesn't?
rabu posted a topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
This is probably only a start, but hopefully it will lead to us discovering what is causing this distracting distortion for some of us, while others don't seem to have the problem. And it may lead to a solution. Typically, the following distortions occur when rapid movement is made inside the cockpit, they are so rapid that they appear as a flash, but are quite noticeable. I would say it's not a game breaker, you do tend to get used to it, but it would be great if we can find a solution for the problem. From many of the comments it seems to happen more on clear days and is less obvious or absent on cloudy or dark days. One player noted that it happens more when he is also trying to make a video recording using Fraps as he flies, and is much less severe or absent when not recording. The purpose of this poll is to try to isolte the problem to system specs or hardware and to TrackIR use, or non use, so all of your inputs and thorough information will be quite valuable. Also, any other thoughts about circumstances that seem to lead to distortions, or those that seem to help eliminate them, or decrease them will be extremely helpful. -
Yea, those higher concentration setting are for the guys here with the Ferrari computer set ups, or at lease, a lot better then I have! I leave mine on the default normal level and have plenty of action.

Video Tearing in OFF - Who has it, Who doesn't?
rabu replied to rabu's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Lou: I tried this this afternoon and couldn't get it to work. I assume that the CFS3 part of OFF has to be running when you set the priorities and affinity. So I started a quick mission in OFF and then tried to get into task manager but couldn't. What were the steps you took and is there another way to alter these for the cfs3.exe file with out actually having to run the program while doing it? -
Ya.. that would be me, who started that thread, actually about violence in war games (click here) , and ya, it was interesting till it turned political by a few who can't seem to help themselves . I'll pass on the gore, but looking forward to your OFF videos. I was playing OFF today with my TrackIR5 setup and realizing just how amazining smooth your filming is in your videos, I don't know how you do it and keep from crashing (which I do all the time, not even trying to film anything!)

I've finally had some time to get back to flying OFF a bit on the weekends.. I hope. I'm still having hardware problems, ever since I had the bad blue screen crashes after briefly trying out an overclocked Nvidia 260 with my power supply that couldn't handle the currant, I've had problems. I returned the 260 and went back to my 8800gts, uninstalled drivers, reinstalled, etc. But something is definitely messed up and I hope I didn't fry something on the MOB or elsewhere. When I fly OFF with conservative settings I used to use with no problems (terrains at 3) it will be fine for about 10-15 minutes then suddenly the screen locks up, freezes and the sound keeps going. Then, every 15-45 seconds it will start to move, then freeze again. I have trouble getting out of the program and my mouse cursor also freezes. If I hit ctrl-alt-del, it doesn't switch to task manager, or it takes several minutes to do it. The best way I've found to get out of it is to wait till it starts to move then hit escape to bring up the go to hanger drop down, then try to get the cursor on the exit and click it. The only other games I have installed are ROF and TestDrive Unlimited. TDU has only done it a few times. ROF does it sometimes, but not as often as OFF, so I think it's related to resource loading. I tried the OFF workshop reinstall and it didn't help. I've looked in the Windows event manager and it doesn't show any problems after a crash.. weird. I'm wondering whether the 260 tryout may have hurt my Antec three rail TP-3-650 PS, or something on the MOB may be damaged? Are there any tests I can run, or ways of finding out what is going on? Any help or advice is appreciated greatly. I was looking forward to flying OFF last night and it was disappointing and frustrating.. always just at good points in a shoot out!

Whew... Drivers! Apparently the drivers I dl'd a few months ago were bad.. that's all I can figure out. I went to the Windows update page and it needed some Windows updates, malicious software remover, etc. and then I had it search for any hardware driver updates and it showed that I needed a Nvidia update for the 8800GTS, so I did it from there (I usually dl it from Nvidia and install it). Any way, to make it short, rebooted, fired up OFF and it's running fine again. Just had a very nice quik combat mission in a N11, with two wing mates against four E3's, OFF is looking great! Now I just need to make some adjustments to TrackIR5 to improve the viewing. I set the planes to 5, both terrains to 3, clouds and effects to 4 and it's running very smoothly in the 40s-60's Thanks everyone!
