  1. OFF and SuperFetch.

    1. Factual point: You can try Superfetch at zero cost. It is a part of the Operating System. There is absolutely no financial cost for trying something that comes as part of the OS. It's not "not necessarily free." It is unarguably free. No one has ever turned on Superfetch and gotten a bill from Microsoft for doing so. 2. Factual point: You compared the cost of purchasing RAM to an SSD drive, not the cost of trying Superfetch. I didn't say RAM was free. I said Superfetch was free. Please try to read more carefully so that you might avoid making these kinds of mistakes in your future posts. 3. Factual point: SSD drives are not free. So the cost difference of trying Superfetch - which is free - and the cost of buying an SSD drive is NOT non-existent. $59 is more than zero dollars and that can be alot to someone who is on an extremely tight budget. I will, however, be happy to agree that the prices have fallen dramatically in recent years and so are much more reasonable than when SSD drives first came out. Still, if someone can't afford one, then they can't afford one. They can always afford to try Superfetch on their existing machines without cost, regardless of their budget. 4. Factual point: If you can't afford an SSD drive, then you will in fact get zero performance increase from it. There is absolutely nothing arguable about this statement. I'm not sure what you could possibly be opposed to in this statement. It's elementary, really. 5. Factual point: If you try Superfetch - for free - you might get a performance increase. Will it be more than an installed SSD drive? No, but it will probably be an improvement. Some improvement is better than no improvement. Again, elementary. 6. Factual point: I never said anything about people not buying or shouldn't buy an SSD drive unless everyone can get one. I stated if they can't afford one, free alternatives are worth a try. In fact directly contrary to your accusation, I posted "If you have the cash to drop on an SSD drive, I haven't heard anyone complain that it wasn't worth it." That is a recommendation to buy one if you have the money to do so. Scroll up a bit to see you are 100% wrong here. The fact that I purchased one myself only continues to hammer home the falseness of your utterly fabricated accusation. I would kindly request that you please not ask me to "keep it real" while you are making completely unfounded accusations about me that can be disproven on the very same page of the thread. It doesn't hurt my feelings at all. I just don't like to see you embarrass yourself like that. Please enumerate which of these factual points is wrong sir and exactly why. Now, If somebody asked me if I thought they should buy more RAM to get the most out of Superfetch, I would tell them to put the money towards an SSD drive because they will get more consistent performance gains for the money. With careful reading, you will see that I never recommended someone buy RAM over an SSD drive (presuming they have at least 8GB of RAM). What I said was if you can't afford an SSD drive, it doesn't cost anything to try Superfetch and at least you might get some performance gain just as a few people on here have stated they did. To me, that is a completely rational and logical contribution to the discussion, backed up by facts that I have yet to see you refute. I stand by Hellshade's Law of Computer Performance and I have yet to see anything from you that contradicts it. It's common sense and that is all I am advocating.
  2. OFF and SuperFetch.

Hellshade's Law of Computer Performance The perfomance increase of a peice of hardware that you cannot afford is always exactly Zero. Therefore, anything that you can afford or can do for free will result in better performance than the hardware you can't get. Walls of text will not change that fact.
  3. OFF and SuperFetch.

I think what it boils down to is that if you don't happen to have a few hundred dollars to drop on an SSD Drive, try SuperFetch. It costs nothing but a little of your time and might well offer some improvement to your gaming experience. If you have the cash to drop on an SSD drive, I haven't heard anyone complain that it wasn't worth it.
  4. I'll roll with september 18th, 2013. Here's hoping I'm Over by at least 2 months. :)
  5. Umm...

I am sorry to see that everyone - Erik, Forum Members & the Devs, have found so much frustration over all of this, although I can see from the point of view of each why. (Except JFM - who we all know is as heartless as a Star Trek Vulcan and so won't do much more than raise an eyebrow - j/k buddy) At any rate, for what it is worth, which is probably nothing...I have to agree with the Vulcan....err, JFM. The Forums are still here, thanks to Erik. OBD has stated there will no longer be an official Forum anyway, so the SimHQ vs CombatAce thing will sort itself out in short measure since neither one will be the "official forums". That means that folks will probably go where ever they feel they get the best service. (Hint: Erik, don't throw out the bathroom in your gas station just yet). I think alot of the frustration also comes down to the fact that WOFF still hasn't shipped yet and so a lot of people have decided it never will or whatever. In this regard, I have to say that my sympathy goes to the Devs. You may say that's because I'm a rabid fanboy, but the problem with that accusation is I haven't really flown OFF in quite some time for various reasons. So why does my sympathy go to the Devs? It's because they know they can't release any details or Features about what WOFF will do without concerns of them being hijacked by another, larger, company or potentially facing outrageous accusations as have been made in the past. So while they work their asses off in secret to try and bring the best possible WWI flight sim / air war experience to life that they can behind closed doors, they have to watch their fanbase slowly drift apart over the years and also endure accusations of every type imaginable. Not to mention personal crises that have popped up from time to time. All to eventually ship a product to a small niche market (WWI flight sims) within another small niche market (flight sims in general) that will probably never compensate them financially for the amount of time they have had to invest. It must be hard for them to keep their motivation going, yet somehow they apparently do. Are the Devs perfect? Of course not. Have I agreed with every decision they have ever made? No. But I do believe they are doing their damn best to ship WOFF when it's ready and filled with the features they want to provide. I don't believe Erik is perfect either, but I have no doubts that he is doing his damned best when it comes to providing a high quality forum for OFF. But not everything is under these guys control. Shit happens and everyone will just have to deal with it in their own way. If people have to vent their frustrations, go right ahead. But I would only ask this: When venting frustrations about others (Erik, OBD, Forum members, whomever), ask yourself if it turns out that you happen to be wrong if you plan on putting the same amount of vocalization in admitting it to everyone. Hopefully someday soon we will be able to face one other in the WOFF skies and settle all such disputes with virtual lead. (For the record though, I stand by my accusation that JFM is, in fact, a Vulcan.) Hellshade

  7. OT but have to laugh...

    I bet that's got a few people 'steamed'. :P
  8. Have I arrived too late?

    Will work for Copy.
  9. Have I arrived too late?

Welcome to the party. If you know anyone else who might be interested in WWI flight sims, I made a little "user created comercial" that shows people just a smattering of what Over Flanders Fields has to offer. The Over Flanders Fields Experience (5:07) 1080HD
  10. 100 Years Ago...

To me, even the end of World War I is nothing to celebrate for in it was planted the seeds of the war that followed due to the harshness of the treaty. That war was even more brutal than the first...and so the killing not only continued, it intensified. And with the end of the World War II, we had still not learned our lesson because the only thing that stopped there being a third world war between the soviets and the west was the fear of genuine world destruction and the end of all life. We do not seem to ever find a way to learn to live in peace, despite our differences...but rather at some point we just run out of young men to die, so we wait until enough children grow up and then start again.

  12. A long time back, I noted that I really hoped WOFF would change it so the engines no longer exploded out of the planes because, for me at least, it killed the immersion of the sim when it happened. Winder replied that he always hated that too and so they fixed it so they no longer do that in WOFF. Truly wonderful news, IMHO.

Hat in the Ring is a virtual Must Buy for OFF. Read the Preview of Features and Reviews to see why sir. 14. Aroth, The test only runs against your Primary (boot) hard disk. If you are running the sim off a different drive, as I am, then you will get the better performance while flying the sim, but you can't change the Performance Index number unless you actually change out which hard disk you boot from.
  15. Here she is in action right after Louvert delivered her to me. Be sure to watch it in 720 or 1080HD for best picture quality to see his fine work. Hellshade
  16. RAF Louvert custom painted it for me, since I love the Triplane so much! He does outstanding work, does he not?
  17. Processor: 7.6 RAM 7.8 Graphics 7.9 Gaming Gfx 7.9 Hard disk 5.9 I made my 7200 RPM drive my boot drive so it kills the score, but most gaming is done off either my 10k Raptor or my SSD drive. My guess though is that most people who have refreshed their CPU and GPU within the last 2 years will be running WOFF without any troubles at all. I'm not a Dev but I have seen a bunch of the screen shots. Most of them say 60 FPS on them even before the Devs bought Geforce 680s.
  18. OFF2 DEVELOPMENT Screenshots

Well, all I can say after that post is they damn well better not release it until they have the full story of one winged, egg eating ptarmigan mascot fully integrated into the campaign. Anything less is going to be getting a "Boo Hiss" from this simmer. Hellshade
  19. Albert Ball is angry with me

That is exactly how it works sir. You can shoot him down, but he won't die in the sim until the historical date of his death.
  20. OFF2 DEVELOPMENT Screenshots

I too would like to pre-order it, as would a great many others. I'm guessing the reason they haven't taken pre-orders though is can you imagine if we had pre-ordered it sometime in 2010 and it still hadn't shipped yet and had no release date. Most pre-orders are for games that are about to ship in the next 30 days or so.
  21. OFF2 DEVELOPMENT Screenshots

The idea that they should "release already" and take care of the rest with adds on that we pay for makes perfect sense....assuming that they have been able to develop the game by making sure all of the core features were done first and are indeed now only working on the "extras'. But what if they are still tweaking aspects of the combat AI so that they can either remain fighting up high longer without diving for the deck or else when they get down low they cannot yet fight effectively, making them too easy of a kill? What if the flight models don't all match up within reason of being historically accurate yet? What if the campaign manager doesn't have a complete database and there are many squadrons that have huge holes in them regarding what planes they flew, when they flew them, which Aces flew them and what squadron colors were painted across their wings? What if the Multiplayer option is currently just a shell of what it needs to be in order to be enjoyable? Should they still release it then? I hardly think there would be anything but a great wailing of disappointment from even the most faithful (W)OFF enthusiasts. The (W)OFF crowd is quite particular and vocal about even the smallest of details. It's not just the Devs who are perfectionists. It seems to me that in the past there have been many in the crowd who clamor for no less than what the Devs are trying to provide by pointing out some of the smallest details that are not right (real or imagined) and the Devs who are the recipient of such "feedback" are more than aware of that. If you ask me, and I will pointedly note that nobody has, the time it is taking to produce and ship WOFF can be equally attributed to as much the perfectionism of the fanbase as it can be to the Devs. Hellshade
  22. OFF2 DEVELOPMENT Screenshots

They haven't. In fact they have added so many new features to the sim that they have actually decided to skip the 2nd generation WOFF (Wings Over Flanders Fields) and go directly to publishing the 3rd generation of the sim WWOFF (Wings Way Over Flanders Fields). It's going to be an instant classic :)
  23. OFF2 DEVELOPMENT Screenshots

They of course can answer for themselves but if I had to guess, I'd imagine it's more like the pain of 4 years of continuous childbirth. They know it'll be wonderful when it's over, but getting it out is a non-stop effort of giving it everything they have.
  24. OFF2 DEVELOPMENT Screenshots

I must imagine that the Devs need WOFF to release "soon" even more than the community does. After working hard on their day jobs all day, they must then labor all evening on WOFF. I am sure they know the forums are much quieter than they were in years past. Part of that is due to the forums having been split in two awhile back due to an unfortunate forum crash. But also they must know that while they work feverishly to give WOFF every new feature, every historically rich detail, OFF itself has remained - apart from the excellent mods the community has developed - much the same as it was when the last large patch was released some years ago. Yet other sims have added new features and community mods that are closing some of the gaps that once set OFF far above all the competition. I am sure the Devs know this and I am sure that they are frustrated that they want to put all of the new features of WOFF into the hands of the community, but they cannot because their vision isn't ready yet. Their perfectionism is a double edged sword for while on the one hand it means that when WOFF is finally released it will be a Masterpiece of immersion and sweeping scope, yet on the other hand it means that they will not release it until it truly is that and so we must wait far longer than the development time one might expect of a sequel. Yes, I don't doubt the frustration of the Devs wishing to release WOFF soon indeed. But I also think they know that to release WOFF as anything less than the best it can possibly be made would be a let down to the very same community that begs for it's release. Another year come and gone indeed. For myself, I have decided that rather than be impatient for the sim I would desperately love to fly but is not yet released, I shall be grateful that they have not lost their passion and abandoned the project because the scope of it was just too much. How many great games have died in production because the passion of the Devs or the money to see it through ran out before the project could be completed? We are very fortunate indeed that Pol, Winder and the rest still burn with a desire to make WOFF everything it can be, despite the fact that WWI flight sims are very much a niche market that likely will not financially reward them anywhere near what their time was worth. Thank you OBD. I offer a toast to your pain and your passion. Hellshade
