A cry for help, even though I don't recognise it
Hellshade replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I posted it giving you full credit sir. However the one person who has responded so far claims it did not help them. I'm not sure of course if they followed the instructions properly or it genuinely didn't work, but at least it's there for folks to try. Hellshade -

Bravo Hasse Wind. Helping someone out with a different sim on the OFF:BH&H forum. That's not something you see often elsewhere. You are a class act sir. Hellshade -

In all fairness to Widow, I'd be pretty pissed in his situation too. And yes, they co-exist quite nicely on my hard drive as well. I too am looking forward to the next patch as well as to P4 when it ships. Between that and the upcoming World of Planes (if it really does what they claim) it's going to be a banner year for flight sim enthusiasts! Might be time to upgrade to a shiny new 2600k cpu and MB. I hear folks are getting them overclocked to 5ghz and that even at the same speed as a first generation i7, they are roughly 25% faster! So basically it would be like having a 6ghz i7! Whoot! Widowmaker, I can appreciate your frustration. It seems contradictory to me too that other games run fine on Dual Core Win 7 systems but RoF blames Windows for the problem. It runs very well on other configurations but obviously that isn't going to help you any. HW, if that solution actually works, you would make some people very happy. I can't test it because I have a quad core. He's not talking about CoD. Hellshade -
OT: What else are you playing right now besides OFF?
Hellshade replied to Javito1986's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
When I'm not flyng OFF:BH&H I'm usually either playing Rift (a new fantasy MMO that rocks!), or flying Wings of Prey or Rise of Flight. I'm not playing much Oblivion lately because I've already been spoiled by the videos showing what Elder Scrolls V is going to look like. So...when can I pre-order? Two weeks you say? Hellshade
-
awesome! Thanks guys. This sim is as much an encyclopedia of WWI as it as a combat flight simulator. Hellshade
-
What is that vehicle that is to the immediate left of my left gunsight? Is that a tank? What kind? Hellshade
-
Indeed there are mass battles that take place. I saw tanks and infantry advancing on both sides along with artillery, vehicles, MG nests and of course trenches filled with troops. Not to mention the huge bombardments going on. Great show!
-
Holy $41t. Yep. P4 is going to make some serious waves. And here I was thinking they had already pushed the engine as far as they could go in P3. Silly me. Hellshade
-
Do you have any recommendations for squadrons on both sides? Hellshade
-
I would love to see that! Did you notice at the time if there was a big frame rate or performance hit while looking at the battles? Just curious if such a thing could be implemented more often perhaps. Hellshade

Well as a matter of courtesy we try to avoid the "us vs them" posts because basically people who prefer OFF:BH&H are here in this forum and people who prefer RoF are over at SimHQ in their forum. So the answers you get are going to basically depend on which forum you ask it in and some folks can get pretty defensive about the idea that someone else is criticizing their favorite sim. Frankly, if you've already settled on OFF:BH&H (which is great!) then it doesn't really matter what the other flight sims on the market do. As someone who regularly flies both sims, I can tell you what really matters is that you find you are getting what you want out of the sim that you are flying in that moment. If you find a group of people you can share your enthusiasm with, even better and you will definately get that here in spades. I don't think anyone here at OFF is anymore concerned about RoFs next patch than the RoF fans are of the upcoming OFF: Phase 4. They're pretty much two seperate worlds and that seems to work just fine. Hellshade

OT: New Nvidia 270.51 Beta drivers released
Hellshade replied to Hellshade's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I haven't seen any major benefit to OFF, but my rig runs it pretty smooth to begin with so hard to tell. I did have to uninstall my old drivers and do a clean install. It kept failing otherwise. After the fresh installm everything was happy. Might be different for you as upgrading drivers was a listed option. Hugh increase in FPS if you are a Dragon Age II fan. Hellshade -
I wish Duce all the best as well. It's not that suprising that we don't see as many posts from some of the other, long established, members of this forum. BH&H and HitR have been out and fully patched up for awhile now. With no new patches on the horizon and P4 understandably kept under closely guarded secret except for a few beautiful screenies the Devs released, the main topics to discuss are generally about: 1. Reports from the Front 2. Screenshots or videos 3. DiD campaign questions or stories 4. The occassional technical issue 5. User mods So this is the calm before the storm. I think when P4 comes out, or at the very least when we start to see preview videos and perhaps a list of the new features that the wizards of OBD have in store for us, things will heat up fairly quickly and many dormant voices will be heard again. In the meantime, folks head off to do other things while they wait for new information to start being posted again here by the Devs. It's just human nature. I know I'm spending more time playing Rift (awesome new fantasy MMO!) and messing around with other flight sims, but I still fly OFF too. In fact Lt. Todd Spaulding of RNAS1 just got shot down last night by the remaining pair of german two seaters after he took out the lead plane. He died for God and country! Hellshade

There's a change to the AI that I think would bring even more excitement to the game. Let me know what you guys think. Actually, two changes. 1st - That the AI become more aggressive towards enemy aircraft more often. In other words, if I'm alone against 6 EA, at least 3 to 4 of them would be actively attempting to shoot me down and flying aggressively after me. Not just 1 or 2 with the rest "flying cover" until they see their wingman killed. This would force me to fly much more defensively, checking my 6 more often. Giving me less time to line up a foe because one of his wingman is likely lining up on me even as I am getting ready to shoot. It would make fighting off multiple attackers a far more harrowing experience. Survival under those circumstances was very low, I am sure. Possible, but unlikely. I would definately have to choose my fights more carefully too. 2nd - That my planes ability to take damage without severe loss of controls after just a few short hits was strengthened. If that is not possible then perhaps just lowering the gun accuracy a bit more though that affects the player too. I think the first option would be better if it's even possible. Sometimes when I fly against multiple aircraft, I think "they should be more aggressive, considering how outnumbered they know I am." The current OFF AI is definately some of the best I've seen in a WWI flight sim, however since the Devs are already looking to improve it in P4, it would be even better if being surrounded was more about being attacked by several planes at once than by 1 or 2 planes at a time while the rest "waited their turn". For what it's worth, EVERY flight sim I have seems to work this way at the moment. Several planes fly around while one or two carry the fight to the player. IF OBD could make this change, it would definately be ground breaking and, quite probably, the fact that it hasn't been done this way by anyone may mean it's either very difficult to do or too difficult to do and still maintain a fair chance of survival by the player. It's just an idea. What do you guys think, if it can even be done? Hellshade
-
Glad to hear you ordered it. You won't regret it. It's true that no other WWI flight sim has a dynamic campaign like OFF. Nobody else has as much historically accurate stuff crammed into their sim either. As for a pre-owned OFF:BH&H, I don't think you'll see any of those until Phase 4 comes out. And even then, probably not many. Welcome aboard. Stay high over the front. Watch your fuel gauge. Check your 6 constantly and don't forget to lead your target. You'll do fine. All two weeks... OT: Cliffs of Dover Dev Diary
Hellshade replied to Hellshade's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
They would have every right... I would just hope during the process of kicking my arse they accidently dropped a Beta P4. I'd be worth it as long as I could still see (out of at least one eye) and work the joystick afterwards. I realize P4 is still probably a very long ways away, but I can't help but think that it's going to be the mother of all historically accurate sims of any era, let alone just WWI sims. They are all being awfully quiet and I'm pretty sure it's not because they are busy installing an epileptic filter. Ya know? Seriously though, if they ever do decide to make a P5, I think if it's possible to Mod, the CoD engine (once fixed) would probably be a great choice. The map area it covers is large enough to cover the entire western front, I believe. And it's not desolate. It's filled with villages, towns, forests, etc. If you don't hear back from me after this it's probably because I've been perma banned by OBD. Again, I wouldn't blame them. Hopefully they take what I say as I ment it. Certainly not as a knock to the amazing work they have and are doing right now. Hellshade -
I'm downloading them now. It looks like it was written to support the GTX 590 dual GPU video card, but the release notes say it increases performance for 400 / 500 cards in several games. They did not say which games. http://www.nvidia.com/content/DriverDownload-March2009/confirmation.php?url=/Windows/267.85/267.85_desktop_win7_winvista_64bit_english.exe&lang=us&type=GeForce I'm trying them now for the hell of it. Crap. They only work for the GTX 590. That's basically a dual GPU GTX 580 in a single slot solution. Hellshade -
Werner Voss or a Cecil Lewis?
Hellshade replied to Javito1986's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I fly ruthlessly and aggressively because I know it won't actually cost me my life. Voss was 20 something when he died. What more might he have been known for had he lived another 40 years? What things might he have accomplished? But those are my values. Voss lived and died by his. My choice, if forced upon him, might have left him a bitter old man who felt empty for not doing what his heart told him to do when he had the chance. He lived and died by his values and so did Cecil. That's actually more important than the "what if's" in my personal opinion. What good is life without passion and how can there be passion if you don't follow your heart? Helllshade -
OT: Cliffs of Dover Dev Diary
Hellshade replied to Hellshade's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
That is very unfortunate indeed. Oblivion would likely not still be played by so many people today if not for the, literally, tens of thousands of mods that have been developed for it. If IL-2:CoD is closed as well, then they are really limiting themselves. I'm sure if / once they get the lower frame rate issue resolved it will be very popular indeed, but mods always provide a longer hard drive life for games. Oh well, maybe Wings of Prey 2 will be open to mods. Hellshade -
OT: IL-2:Cliffs of Dover released in Russia
Hellshade posted a topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
1C, the Dev for IL-2:CoD is blaming lack of SLI support and very low framerates on an epilepsi filter they say Ubisoft required them to put into the game. For it's part, Ubisoft says 1C was made aware of the filter requirement over a year ago and none of its other games, including Hawx 2, suffer from these performance issues. Russian players who bought the game are posting videos that often dip to 10FPS and below, even when over water or looking at the sky with just a few planes. I sincerely hope they get it straightened out before the European and North American release dates. For now, it appears to be in the hands of 1C to come up with something fast before the game review sites massacre it in print. Ashame really. I had high hopes once I read all of the features it was supposed to include. Hellshade -
OT: IL-2:Cliffs of Dover released in Russia
Hellshade replied to Hellshade's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Well, ironically one of the few advantages that OBD Software has as a developer, despite being under staffed and under funded, is that they have the integrity and ability to only release a sim when it ready for prime time. They are not tied to a Publisher for a completion date where they have to ship by then, no matter what stage of completion the game is in. They don't have investors howling for returns. I know they must go through their own hell with everything people want and what few resources they have to make it happen, but the beauty is when they finally do release something you know it's going to be a working product that is heavily polished. Thats the advantage of releasing games out of passion instead of purely for profit. Hellshade
