  1. 33LIMA, you were correct there, and WIKIPEDIA (German) was wrong. What a bummer - the English WIKI has it correct!!! I am not an expert on WW1 aircraft, like many others here are. So I took the info for granted. I shouldn't have gone for an aircraft I don't know ANYTHING about except for that it's a German two-seater. My mistake. You were correct with all answers and now it is your turn, Sir.
  2. LIMA, I must do some more research. It is well possible, that either the English or the German WIKIPEDIA contains wrong information. The German WIKI says, that the gunner was placed in front of the pilot ONLY in the C.Ia, and that it was changed on all later models. But in Rosebud's Early Aviation website, it looks the other way round, just like you say. I'll see through the Windsock files now.
  3. When you sign in, you should see a "Remember me" button or something like. Press that button, and you will not have to write your password next time. Also, you can always change your password after getting one per E-mail. Change it to something you won't forget - like your wife's family name, or the first LP you ever bought. That's how I manage to survive in times of the web.
  4. Almost correct, LIMA - but what do you say, when I tell you, that in most Aviatik C-types, the observer was sitting behind the pilot? So, I wanted the exact type numbering/name.
  5. Here is one for Hasse Wind: 1. Which is the exact aircraft name and type, and by what can the exact type be easily be identified? 2. Which year was it introduced? 3. This craft was used by KaGOHL - what does KaGOHL stand for in German, and what does it mean in translation?
  6. I knew it was complicated. The problem for me was, that some people seem to have got the two words "gyroscopic effect" and "engine torque" confused in the past. I had once found a great video of the effects created by a rotary engine, demonstrated by a physician, in YouTube, but can't find it again.

    Yes, the sacrifices we make for OFF... My upgrade was not cheap, but it was worth it! Now I can run the sim plus TrackIR plus FRAPS to make videos. I saved a while for that. You should be able to overclock it a bit, if necessary, ReDDoT.
  8. Well, the "engine torque" should be the same as the already mentioned "gyroscopic effect" (which made turning to the right double as fast as for other fighters)? Hey, there must be some more Camel enthusiasts around here? Come on, you guys - help!
  9. A wise decision. Join Jasta 2, when they get the Albatros D.II. If you want it harder, join them, when they get the Halberstadt. Still a quite good fighter. But to the Eindecker, you should come back after a year or so in OFF.
  10. Barker's Camel was flown in No. 28 Sqdn RFC under the number "1", there was also a smaller letter "C"; it had serial no. B6313. As for the third factor, I think I need a more experienced Camel pilot's help here. You don't mean the blip switch, perchance?
  11. 1916: Jasta 2 had a very successful afternoon patrol near Cantin aerodrome. We sighted some silver Nieuport 17 attacking the airfield and engaged them with great advantage. They had no chance and fell within minutes. One had almost escaped. But he returned, when he saw that his comrades were kneedeep in trouble. This single fighter took all six of us on in a desperate fight. When he fell under my guns at 16:24 h, west of Cantin airfield, he fell as a hero. Some say, the French fighter pilots were not the bravest. That is utter nonsense!
  12. Hmmm - well, if no one bites.... Not sure if all three factors are among my No. 2 answer, but worth a try. 1. TheSopwith F.1 "Camel" was designed and produced by Thomas Sopwith's "Sopwith Aviation Company"; the name "Camel" came from the two bumps of the metal hood covering the guns 2.1 The weight of the engine, the tank and the pilot were in the first 7 feet of the aircraft, near the center of gravity. 2.2 The very strong gyroscopic effect of the engine made the fighter turn incredibly fast in right rounds. 2.3 The Clerget engine was very sensitive to mixture control. (The Camel lacked a variable incidence tailplane. So the pilot had to apply constant forward pressure on the stick at lower altitude. The Sopwith F1 "Camel" was the first British fighter to be standard-equipped with two machine guns firing through the propellor.) 3. Major William Barker shot down 46 aircraft and balloons in his "Camel". An anekdote: when Barker's Camel was dismantled in 1918, Barker kept the clock as a memento. But he was asked to return it the following day.
  13. Jasta 2 had just taken off, when we were attacked by 6 or more Bristol F2b fighters. My engine got damaged within seconds, but it lasted long enough to bring down one of those grey-nosed "Killer-Pigs". I real life, they would have scared the hell out of me!

  16. Just searched YouTube for the RFC version of "John Peel", but didn't find it. Here is the original song, as presented by "Finnegan's Wake". There are better sound quality versions perhaps, but I found, that this scruffy, distorted recording gets me closer to the imagination of RFC boys singing it. Try and sing the above text to it; works fine.

  19. Ooops! So Jasta 33 also had yellow markings? I didn't know that (as they are not in OFF yet). And thank you for the info - I thought, OvS did all the Fokkers.
  20. Thank you, Shiloh - skinning is still my greatest fun besides of the flying. Here is another Jasta 2 skin - I change between the two. In our patrol area east of Ypres, we sighted two flights of Sopwith Triplanes. Bernert, who flew 500 meter higher than us, attacked, and so I had to join in with my men. It was an amazing scrap, a real furball! After only minutes, we found ourselves fighting low at the deck. Here, I managed to shoot a wing off one Triplane, and the Tommy crashed. By then, the other Albatros were out of my sight, and I tried to run away from 4 or 5 Tripehounds. They kept chasing me; after two miles, I still had two of them behind me. I lured them to a nearby airfield, to get some assistance from Flak and machine guns. We were turning incredibly low and tight - I was constantly in danger of stalling or hitting a tent or a tree. But then came my chance! One Tommy got driven away from us, when he evaded some Flak bursts. Before he was back at my six again, I got behind his wingman and shot him to pieces. He crashed right into the field. Then I put my kite down near a machine gun position.
  21. Before you do a complete re-install, you should try the two "Workshop" options "Reset OFF Manager" (try this first) and then, if it doesn't help, try "Reset CFS3". You will lose all pilots in both cases, but you may be able to save your install. If it doesn't help - well, then you must make a complete reinstall. I had that pleasure twice. You'll survive it.

    Jasta 5 is a great unit to fly with, and the Halberstadt is the first German good fighter craft in OFF. One can fly the aircraft chronologically, or one can fly the easier to fly aircraft first, and come to the others later. The Eindecker would be the last German fighter to try then. All others are easy, except for the Fokker Dr.1, which can be a bit more tricky, because it is an "instable aircraft". I will not necessarily overclock. But I want to try it out, to see, if the performance will improve even more. If I won't see any noticable difference, I will go back to "default".

    Spent a good deal of the afternoon in the nearby Rehberge Park, sitting on a bench, reading the chapter about the home defense period of No. 46 Sqdn, RFC, 1917; in Arthur Gould Lee's "No Parachute". A well spent Easter sunday afternoon.
