  1. WWI film

The film shows, what can be done nowadays. Now, if only they would do it much more realistic! It looked so promising - and then still so wrong.
  2. Ganz meine Meinung, Dej, and Lou! We now seem to slowly come to the bit, where not yet the monarchy will be wiped away, but the class differences may get more blurred. Or at least be kept more secretly. Good stuff, Lou!
  3. Yes, I had similar thoughts about former airfields. But then, all the easy to recognise parts must have been colected by now. You may find bolts, screws and minor parts still, but nothing too exciting, I assume.
  4. Oh, a wonderful addition, Dej - so that is your Google Earth overlay project? How far have you got? And is it pubicly available already?
  5. Well, most times I make it back alive. Another very usefull method to get rid of a SPAD pestering me, is to fly around German balloons. Almost every time, the SPAD gets distracted from me, once it is hit by ground fire. The balloon crews are NOT so amused about that - usually, their sausage gets blown up in their own Flak and machine gun fire. But hey - it's only a balloon. It saved my life and an Albatros!
  6. This aerial photgraph, taken at low altitude and from a flat angle view, shows very well, how trenches lay embedded in the Flanders landscape. The name "Madcap Farm" struck me - it fits so well... This one is Wytschaete - before and after. The right pic was taken on 3 June 1915, the left one on 12 June 1917. As if to show: bombardements and shellings were sucessfull - mission accomplished...
  7. Ah - nice to see, that you seem to read some of our combat reports, Shredder!
  8. Although your tactic makes perfect sense in terms of AI low flying behaviour, I prefer to climb out a bit, at least, when everybody else is fighting very low. Of course I will be more exposed and in greater danger of receiving long, fatal bursts. But I can dive in for a kill, and retreat with the gained energy, and it just feels more realistic to me. But for a long run home, out of ammo, with some mad SPADs behind me, I'd use exactly that flying below tree top level. I call it "Daisy-counting-level". Although the SPADs usually get me out of counting sooner or later with a short burst.
  9. Be assured, Pol and Shred - if there is any sim community being able to sense all that detail, then it must be ours. I discover new bits again and again, and I know, that it must have been a long journey of collecting the knowledge and books, to get it all right. We can, of course, never fully understand, how much work it really was and is - you can only understand that, after you have done it yourself. So please forgive us, when we are standing around you like demanding, hungry children, after your hard day at the treadmill. Sounds like the days of my youth - and maybe Bullethead's.
  10. Okay, thanks for clearing that, JFM - and for MvR's combat manual!
  11. Tch! Crumpetz!! Vee hav zem for breakfast almoszt every mornink! Mmuahahahahahaaaaa!!!!!
  12. Good show, Hellshade. I was wondering about your FOV - it seems very distorted in width? If you like, send me a PM with your screen res, and I'll calculate you some possible settings.
  13. Found these works quite interesting. The guy put aerial photographs of airfields over Google Earth Maps. Then he changed the view angle. Enjoy! http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/other-wwi-aviation/40559-google-earth-wwi-aviation.html
  14. I have changed the TAC size and the Label colours, which I always found too much of a sting in the eye. I did not only change the colours, but also made them slightly transparent. They will be harder to see, so they can be used as one step on the way to flying without Labels at all. If you like what you see below, you may want to try it out. Attached here is my variant of the ViewUI.xml file, which goes into this folder: (Computer name) > AppData > Roaming > Microsoft > CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields You should WinZip your original file right there, to save it. PS: does anyone know, where to change the red writing in the TAC screen?
  15. You must have better eyes than me. Or a better graphic resolution? I frankly admit, that, when I don't fly my "fully serious pilots" (in Jasta 2 and Jasta 11), I use Labels quite often. In rather tired state of mind and eyesight, I prefer doing so, to have some fun. Otherwise I don't find the enemy planes, which have dived down. I am pretty sure, that in RL, they would be a good bit easier to recognise? (Shimmering etc.)
  16. Not quite, Widowmaker. He said, that he himself was a hunter, while his brother was a shooter. Yeah, Hasse Wind, I also think, that Lothar was rather very lucky to survive that war.
  17. Yes, we are great, aren't we? Ahem - and as you walk to the bar: I'll have a big Warsteiner! Congrats for getting it to work - I love this sim so much, that I can't bear, when another pilot has a problem with his gear.
  18. Well, I found this from Lothar von Richthofen - haven't read it yet myself. I think you can read German? http://www.stahlgewitter.com/erlebnisberichte/richthofen1.htm Back in those days after WW1, and with all the implications of the treaty of Versailles, with the humiliation felt by most officers then, it was surely very tempting for a military man to join the Nazis - especially as then they didn't know yet, what it would finally mean. To us nowadays it is a cruel, bad, dark word - Nazi. For them, it was a new and possibly good idea, to be a Nationalsozialist (national socialist).
  19. I have just gone through the newer screenshots again, after returning from some straining "family job", and I was again amazed. The Snipe screenshot is showing very nice alleyways, which are really very common in northern France. The Snipe cockpit is a piece of art really - lovely! The new Triplane exterior look is much more realistic now. Couldn't resist to make a Jpeg of the Snipe cockpit, for all who may not have gone through the newer screens. You find them all at the OFF-website here: http://overflandersfields.com/images/P4Preview/index.html
  20. A Piece of Art

I didn't say: ...shot from the cockpit... Go to the screenshots of P4, and look at the first Snipe picture (exterior view).
  21. That is the logical part, and it's right, I think. But what about the war fatiguee, the headwound, the loss of all the good comrades, seeing the ammo workers on strike, hearing from frontline soldiers, who had orders to attack, but didn't. I just wondered, if he had not realised much earlier, that it could not be brought to a good end.
  22. OT "NO WAY am I sniffin' those!"

Look at that face - sheer horror!
  23. OFF Forum Pilots Maps

Update 4 March 2011 - 15:58 h Berlin time (= GMT + 1) Wombat, Maine, added. The maps are in post 1 of this thread
  24. HPWDMv2.5 problems?

I believe to have noticed, that my crashes happen, when the action gets tight. There are several planes to perform, plus - and here I believe to have noticed one reason for crashing - the sounds to be made. Could that be too much for the memory - action plus sound? After a total re-install, I have not yet re-installed HPW's DM yet, and I still got crashes.
  25. Lewie, your name would be "Löwie" or "Loewie" then, which was a German-Jewish family name, not uncommon. I think I have seen the name on gravestones on the Jewish cemetry of my hometown Norden. I'm not sure, if it comes from "Löwe", the German word for "lion". The sound of the "ü" is not used in English/American, but the "ö" would sound closest to your "u" in "turn". Pawgy, try BurningBeard's key to exit the padlock view - if that won't help, I don't know any further.
