  1. OFF Forum Pilots Maps

Update 27 October; 2010; 11:48 h Berlin summertime (= GMT + 2) Summelar, Washington, added. All the maps are in post 1 of this thread
  2. Well done, Dej - you hit the right touch of tinting this photograph, as if you earned your livelyhood with it.
  3. OT - FaceTrackNoIR

Summelar, could you send me a PM with your town and country? I'd like to add you to our OFF Forum Pilots Maps then. Thanks!
  4. Looks very good - but the bull would be much easier to recognise, plus more aggressively. I got this information from the website: http://gaubs.free.fr...Historiques.htm SPA 85 Insignes : emblems 1° Taureau chargeant (surnommé la vache enragée); 1° Attacking bull (nicknamed "the mad cow") 2° Le joker. The Joker SPA 93 Insignes : emblems 1° Ancre de marine verticale ; 1° Naval anchor, vertical 2° Canard blanc en vol - Après la guerre, canard colvert. 2° White duck in flight - after the war, mallard duck Looks to me like each Escadrille had two groups; so the first group of SPA 85 would have carried the bull, and the second group the Joker emblem. Now you still need to find out, in which group he was. PS: you may also search through this sites, if you like: http://www.insignesaviation.com/ For further searches, the keyword would be insigne. A pulp magazine cover showing a painting of him in his Spad has the motto: "All blood runs red" on the right cockpit side. This photo shows him with the black painted duck (instead of white) on a Nieuport of Escadrille 93/SPA 93.

Three sticks? My "advisor" said, I could only run 2 or 4 sticks - not impair? The values are reset to default values now.

Well, as I said, I have tested with the Windows Diagnose Tool - I didn't see through the endless README.txt with MemTest. I tested two sticks in the red slots, the the other two in the red ones too. Then the first tow in the yellow slots. Then the other two in the yellow ones. I always got an "okay". Then I have set CPU to it's default 2.83 GHz, and the memory clocked to the 1066MHz it should have. Ran fine yesterday - crashed this morning. Ran the Windows Diagnose Tool again, now with all four sticks in their slots. And this time, it said, memory was faulty. I red in a forum about this problem, that some motherboards don't run well with 4 fast sticks; but better with two ones - even if the sum up to the same. Can that be? I am already half convinced, that the best might be to get a better motherboard, CPU, and maybe also new memory. The mobo is a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3, by the way. Thank you for your patience, guys!
  7. Wow, RedDog, what a clear sharp photograph! Excellent desktop! UncleAl, are you and Windows in a war or something? That OS seems to like to tease you at least.
  8. Watch this space!

Your changes are almost subtle about the forward moved center of gravitiy - very good. The Albatros had the tank behind the pilots I think, and so it should be a bit tail heavy, which it still is. That can be solved by each pilot's own trimming. The problem with the "hanging on the prop" was never so very much an Albatros problem, although even they do that, if the tail plane is very badly shot up. It was and still is more a problem for the Nieuports and Pups. Those craft seem to try to climb almost desperately, when they are low. For climbing, they would need good forward flying speed to get airflow over the wings; but they can't fly forward, cause their damaged tailplane doesn't balance the craft anymore. At least this is what I think is happening. It might perhaps work to place more damage/hit points on the elevator, and less on the rest of the tailplane. That way, the elevator can still be damaged badly, but the tailplane's lift would be less destroyable. For the Albatros I can say, you haven't changed it to any worse; and I'll report when I see a badly shot up craft, and how it behaves.
  9. Holy Schnicky! A wonderful lot of info here; thanks for sharing, Lou! Will have to investigate that with more time. This site is definitely something for Hasse Wind to snoop through. Hasse?

It ain't over yet! System crashed again. If anyone knows to read the settings in MB Intelligent Tweaker, please tell me when you see a wrong thing. Here are my values: Robust Graphic Booster: Auto CPU Clock Ratio: [8x] Fine CPU Clock Ratio: [+0,5] CPU Frequency: 2.83GHz(333x8.5) CPU Host Clock Control: [disabled] CPU Host Frequency(MHz): 353 PCI Express Frequency(MHz): [Auto] C.I.A.2: [disabled] Performance Enhance [standard] System Memory Multiplayer(SPD): [Auto] (all other settings on: Auto)

Sorry for misinterpreting you, Parky - didn't happen with any bad intention. And thanks for the explanation. I am running the INTEL Core2 Duo CPU E8300 at it's default 2,83 GHz now. The memory are four CORSAIR Dominator sticks with 1 GB each, and a speed of 1066 MHz. Do you know anything about how far my CPU could be overclocked without getting into the risky zone? System seems to be running good now, Lou; need some more time (and flying) to be really sure. Before I found the reason, it crashed quite often. But if I can overclock this CPU to a rather safe extent, why not?

Hey, the boy has grown! I know, Cameljockey, and I didn't mean to say that. I am pretty sure you love your family, and of course we all sometimes need some time and space for ourselves. Or for OFF.
  13. Right - I got that misunderstood; my fault. I dare to assume, that he may later change to Jasta 28w - the Württembergische Staffel. They operate in a far more dangerous area, and I am already curious about his further ways and deeds.
  14. Back to being British...

The Strutter feels great, if you like flying two-seaters. If you ever fly German two-seats again, Slartibartfast, I highly recommend to you the DFW C.V. She is a rather ugly appearance, but so reliable. She will carry you comfortably to highest altitudes. You will find only one rather disturbing thing - an engine block in front of you - but that crate climbs away from Nieuports with strength and good speed; she is easy to fly and to land; and I even made aerial victories in the kite. And that hot engine block may even keep your nose warm in winter. But I assume, the real reason you went back to the left side of the line, was to have baked beans, toast and scrambled eggs with bacon for breakfast. I understand that. It could almost make me change sides.
  15. That's why I often start a new pilot beginning of May - the weather is just better then. But if you want to fly the Halberstadt D.III or the albatros D.II, you can only fly in late 1916/early 1917. I wish you sunny breaks!
  16. audio magic

The only problem with that is..........I'm never alone. Well, for some it is a problem that they are always alone. We never have it perfect. What about agreed flying time with your family - you use headphones, and they don't sneak in to shock you? Just an idea.
  17. Good to see Paul is back with his beloved Albatros (I could feel the longing!). If he isn't in Jasta 16 anymore - where is he now? Did I miss that bit? Hey - 699 viewings show, that your epic tale is well regarded! (More in "Reports from the Front")
  18. OT...I'm back

I did not do that, von Paulus - it switched over. After restoring the friend's overclocking to 3 GHz, my memory showed a value of only 800 MHz, instead of it's 1066 MHz. Now I needed to find the right multipl. factor to get to 1066 MHz. It was the factor 2.0, and when I clicked that, the right value of 1066 MHz was shown for the memory. AND: the CPU value switched automatcally to it's default value 2,83 GHz. I could go back to 3 GHz for the CPU, and then try all multipl.factors for the memory, to try to get it closest to 1066 MHZ. But I'm not sure, if I should do that. Parky recently said, that even a 2,33 GHz CPU was not too weak for OFF. What do you think?
  19. Forgive me, Father

Not flown OFF for months??? That would be like flying to the moon without oxygen supply - how did you survive that???? Jasta 11 is a perfect choice for re-entry, Jarhead. I also just began flying with them. I hadn't been flying with them so much, and so I realise now, how different the "poor", "average", "good" and "elite" units are really programed. I just wrote it in "Reports from the Front" - an elite unit like Jasta 11 is flying perfectly following Dicta Boelcke. They won't give up altitude, they keep fighting helping each other. They will care for you like Marines. Well, they may sometimes take your kills away. But they are of great assistance, and so far, we have always returned almost complete. Yesterday, I had only one man putting his craft down damaged, out of 7 wingmen I had! And we had fought Brisfits! If I may give you an advice, that a Marine should understand perfectly well: Don't go for your kill collection! Fly for the unit; merge with the unit; just be there and try to do all the right things; forget claims! You may survive for a longer time that way, and if so, the kill tally will grow anyway - even without forcing it.
  20. OT...I'm back

Now I think I REALLY got it right. When changing the multiplication factor for the memory sticks so, that they showed the right value of 1066 MHz, the value of the CPU changed to it's default value of 2,83 GHz. Both values are correct now, and I think I better leave it that way.
  21. OT...I'm back

Von Paulus, I think we found the problem now. A friend of mine had assembled the rig, and he had overclocked the CPU from 2,83 GHz to 3 GHz. He had also adjusted the multiplicator for the memory according to this. Now, I had recently decided for myself, to switch back to 2,83 GHz - but I hadn't known, that I would have to re-adjust the multiplicator for the memory too. Right now, we have gone back to 3 GHz, which made the memory show a value of 800 in BIOS. But their label says, they are 1066 MHz. Do I need to adjust the multiplicator so now, that the second number shows the right value (1066 MHz) or somewhere close to it?
  22. Flying with Jasta 11 was fine again today - they are so reliable wingmen. NE of Arras, we wiped out a flight of BE2c. Then we sighted Nieuport 24 and followed them over the line. We shot at least 3 of the 4 craft down near N of Arras, and near Etrun airfield. Later we spotted more French silvergrey fighters, and I shot down a second Nieuport 24. This kill was actually stolen - the Nupe was already smoking, and there was a guy from Jasta 28w also after it. After landing, I rolled into the tent just for fun, and the 1. Kette performed an almost great landing. Exception: the 2. and 3. craft collided and blew up.
  23. Back in the Campaigns...

...at the present I am attempting to learn Deutsch Austrian Style along with the food the schanpps the wine... the ladies... Good combination to learn Austrian (which I find very hard to imitate); the Schnaps may help to twist the toung enough, and the ladies make it all worth it.
  24. Back in the Campaigns...

You're right there, Slart, as long as we don't have Kasta in OFF, the Roland seem to share the job. Sorry, didn't want to be teaching.
  25. Back in the Campaigns...

I am flying in a Bomber Jasta down near the Swiss border... Slarti, a "Jasta" is a "Jagdstaffel" - directly translated: a hunting squadron; so a Jasta is fighters only. You would be in an FA (Feldflieger-Abteilung). Maybe in P4, we will also get Kasta - Kampfstaffel, which also do bombing (sorry, couldn't stop myself). Lou must know the "Walfisch" well by now, so his advice must work. I also flew the crate several times, and I prefered to come in with full throttle (like I also do with the SPAD), very shallow, and fully reduce throttle only at touch down. Try what works best for you. When you fly with TrackIR: a "trick" I use (it's like Lou's lifting off the chair a bit) is to duck in my seat, press the "center view" command, and then sit straight again. That way I can look over the top wing quite well.
