  1. In my recent fights against Nieuports in an Albatros D II, I found I had no real advantage. When one of the most powerful actions to perform would be to dive away and gain energy, to return in a better position, it doesn't get me anywhere here, since the enemy AI in their Nupes just follow me with the same speed, without their wings breaking. But exactly that would happen - they would loose their wings. Now it may be impossible to simulate that to happen on an AI craft. So I wonder, if it might be possible to write into their "behaviour code", that they just don't dive in an angle any steeper than XX degrees (don't know, what they could do - 30 ° ?). If that could be written into their "program", I had something to balance their better turn, some of the Albatros D II's real advantages. Would be a real great improvement.
  2. You're also flying in November? Our DiD Campaign also does, but I have almost enough of this s**tty wheather every day, in campaign, and when I walk out the door - grey skies and rain, rain, rain...
  3. Why Castor Oil?

Well, Nightshade above sent two links. In the first, it says: During World War I, rotaries attained tremendous popularity. They were less complex and easier to make than the water-cooled type. They powered such outstanding fighter planes as German's Fokker DR-1 and Britain's Sopwith Camel. They used castor oil for lubrication because it did not dissolve in gasoline. However, they tended to spray this oil all over, making a smelly mess.
  4. My ordered parts have arrived, Red Dog, so I should have the new rig ready soon. All I still need is a Fritz box then. Then I will try it. I don't think, I would fly more than one mission though - I feel usually exhausted after one mission, when I met enemy fighters.
  5. Nieuport N.24 Bis Lewis

That awful windshield can be lowered? How's that to be done? That was my main reason not to fly them - that limited forward sight. Hasse Wind, you may have convinced a German pilot to try them now.
  6. First Campaign

Oh, good to hear. My phantasy wasn't foaming bubbles then.
  7. OT (WW2) The Great Escape

Flyby, how are these short scenes made? They are very good! Are they from flight sims? That way, and with the perfection of "Light & Magic" or other CGI companies - and maybe keeping the original acting and some of the aircraft scenes - that would sure make a very great new version of "Battle of Britain". (Funny by the way - when I saw the original in cinema as a boy, I wanted to be a Spitfire pilot. They just looked better to me in their whole design. And for Nazis I didn't want to fight anyway.)
  8. OvS: I too am looking forward to the new options of flying your own skins. It's been a long time coming and it is something that will seperate OFF from all others... Besides the fact, that BHaH is anyway far beyond anything else. But yes - it will be another superstep for even more immersion, and it'll REALLY make me happy!
  9. I think what young people often are really lacking, is the respect for those, who have already done something, achieved something, and fought for something. I wished, their education would get them there, would teach them more of this respect. Here we have "Friedensrichter", and my dictionary says for that "magistrate" or "justice of the peace". Those judges could in this case bring him together with veterans of WW2, for a round, where they tell him what they have done and how they did their duties for his country. This direct contact would - I'm pretty sure - teach him more respect than prison ever could. It would make him think about it, if he isn't pig ignorant, and I can't imagine, he would ever do it again after that.
  10. Good idea for a name for the escort fighters, Von Guber! (If you can still change the typing - it would be right: "Die Engel auf unseren Schultern") Good one!
  11. Yes, sure is. This isn't any ranting or negativity - just a point to look at. If it could be improved, that would be great. If it should be impossible, I will live with it. I would still fly OFF - I can't imagine there's anything better than this.
  12. Bullethead, you can try to dive away from Nupes as you want, they'll follow you all the way down from 12.000 feet to the mud. Watch it, when they attack your (German) airfield: they fall out of the sky vertically. Impossible for Nieuport 11, 16 and 17 - but they do it. This ability of theirs distorts fighting unpleasantly, as you can't play out your "stronger cards", when they turn out not to be stronger at all. Sorry, Hasse Wind, but it ain't so, that the AI knows exactly what the plane can take and do. On airfield attacks, they fall down on you vertically, as I just said. A Nieuport or Albatros D III would definitely loose it's wing, when flown by a human player the exactly same way. No, I'm pretty sure, the wing break isn't simulated for AI craft - maybe because it would make the whole program too tricky, or it is just not possible to do. That's why I hope, it might perhaps be possible to write into their "program", that they shall not dive in a steeper angle than XX degrees, whixh would avoid such unlogical behaviour.
  13. Nieuport N.24

Wonderful, those crates, and your whole pictures, Sandbagger! They also show the detail of settings I'll soon be able to fly - that will be better than Christmas! Modelling new aircraft is a most time intensive work, as you need to build several versions for the various distances to the craft. And good modellers seem to be hard to find. So it makes sense to build those aircraft first, which are flown most - the fighters. Then they will surely make two-seaters, too. This is a gigantic project with the final result of having the whole air combat of WW1 available - no less! So let's be patient - it will be grand!
  14. Well, if he was really drunk, I would have arrested him for the night, and condemned him to clean up the whole memorial, plus all other spots in town, where people have urinated against walls. Prison will only make it worse with him. And the Yellow Press should also get punished for showing that photograph "in public" - those basterds!
  15. Phase Four

RAF_Louvert: Actually Olham, "wasting money on OFF" is an oxymoron, sort of like "military intelligence". That's what I wanted to say - sometimes I'm lacking the advanced vocabulary.
  16. First Campaign

Yup, on some craft, you need some rudder always, and on others I think I get an influence from the wind? Cause sometimes, the Albatros is running straight on, and on other days, there seems to be side wind, and I must correct with rudder. Does anyone else notice that, or do I "dream" something into it here?
  17. New Campaign

Both sides of the "Krauts vs Crumpets" tournament would definitely welcome you. Since we get shot down and then re-start with the bomber squadron again, you haven't missed much yet. For the Crumpets, you would enter 2 RNAS and get a very good craft - the Sopwith Strutter. Good view, can even fight fighters. But: no rear gunner. Get one later on the next Strutter model. For the Krauts, you would enter FA(A) 250 and get a good craft also - the DFW C.V Strong engine, good climb, and a rear gunner. But: an engine block right in front of you makes it necessary to bend left and right sometimes, or to "wag the tail" with use of rudder, to see, what is right ahead of you. Read the "Krauts vs Crumpets" thread, if you are interested. It is great fun!
  18. Welcome back, Dimus. Don't forget to update to the Superpatch plus the latest Minipatch.
  19. Nice incouragement you started here, Widowmaker. Now that we shall soon have real individual skins, it will be done by many, I'm sure.
  20. Could be the right field for Bullethead and his Jasta 4 boys to move in. Not for me, thanks - I need my sleep!
  21. OFF Forum Pilots Maps

Update 11/04/09 16:06 Berlin wintertime (= GMT + 1) Slipstream22, California, added. sittingbison, Australia, added. West Australia settled now! The maps are in post 1 of this thread
  22. OT (WW2) The Great Escape

Yes,there isn't simply a 'good side' and a 'bad side' - the bad people are everywhere. And hopefully always some good men - on either side - too. To fight a war in a human way is almost a paradox.
  23. OT (WW2) The Great Escape

Duce Lewis: I like the 2nd tank engagement in the Op. Market Garden episode too It really highlighted the Tiger's total dominance over the Sherman Gave a sense of how scary it must have been to go up against that tank when your armor is exploding around you Here is a YouTube video about the dominance of the Tiger - it can scare the sh*t out of you to imagine you had to fight them. At the end it also shows, how the RAF destroyed many with rockets and carpet bombing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2XZCJUfeb0&feature=related
  24. OT (WW2) The Great Escape

I think, more than 70 % of the German U-Bootflotte died at sea. So the ending of "das Boot" was almost friendly - they died on land. A film, that really drags me each time again into the claustrophobic craze of submarine warfare and war in general like only few others. The first parts of "Band of Brothers" (first encounter with German tanks) was also made realistic.
  25. Lou, you CAN buy them for that price; it's a "buy immediately" price. Who strikes, gets them. Me, I have to build my new rig (almost got everything together at last).
