  1. Okay, let's go! Picture No. 1 shows an Albatros DV cockpit (possibly that of the craft, the Smithsonian Institute restored beautifully as "Stropp"). That it is a DV type, can be recognised by the pipe leading to the radiator - it is set off to the right of the pilot, so that he couldn't get hurt by hot water, in case the radiator was hit. Behind the window, we see the two 08/15 machine guns, which could be cleared by the pilot; and the valves of the Mercedes DIIIa inline engine (180 hp). On the control column, I miss the two thumb buttons inbetween the hand grips, for firing the machine guns. Above the column, we see the Tachometer. At the right low, the handoperated air pump; above it could be the fuel quantity gauge. Left of the stick is a rollable map, it could be lifted up for reading. Thanks, OvS, that you left it for me! Would have been the easier bit.

    I had another post war craft model with yellow wings, an American trainer, but can't remember the name. Could have been the plane at the left; it had rounded wingtips.

  8. It seems, I can hope, that Germany has learnt that lesson. There are of course neo-fashists here, like anywhere else. But recently they tried to demonstrate, and a whole town stood against them, so they couldn't reach the marketsquare. But like always: when social peace and general economy gets more and more lost, a soil gets prepared for such seeds.

  10. Okay, the Fee's a fighter. When I speak of fighters, I mean the single seaters. Flying in those twoseats into German terrain near Brayelles in early 1917, when the man with the red craft was operating there, you have to be "eisern und irre" (iron and mad"). Have fun - and try the SPAD some more, she's fun!

  13. Thanks. Lou, and sorry, must have overlooked your above answer. Bullet, the single seat fighter for you could be the SPAD. An incredible craft. I have already 5 claims in 4 missions, one confirmed (the French seem to be faster there than the Germans). And when you do all the right things, you should never be in real danger; the only thing that could stop you is a good shooter with a deflection shot.

  15. Thanks, Duce. I had often wondered myself, why nobody had shot Hitler earlier. The answer is quite simple: even the highest ranking officers where not allowed to take their weapons with them, when they met the Fuehrer. After Stauffenberg's bomb attack (Operation Walkyrie), even the bags and pockets where searched. PS: I will meet Herr Meier more often, may be. Best he'd fly in a swim suit!
  16. Hi again, Ben, and welcome here in OFF! Here is a link to a map, where you can search for Squadrons and Jastas. Unclick those nation emblems you don't want, then decide in left window, if you search by Squadron, aerodrome, etc. When you search around Lens - Arras - Ypres - Douai - Cambrai, you will find more action. In 1916, it was still quieter, 1917 is more, and 1918 most action. If you want to start moderate, I recommend September 1916. French: Nieuport 11; Britain: Sopwith Pup; Germany: Albatros DII Have fun!

  18. Hasse Wind: Unfortunately most of those generals and admirals who accepted the Devil's Offer didn't see anything terribly wrong with the Nazis until they started to lose the war. That is not fully right. Many officers saw very early, that a man played fieldmarshal, who had never been of higher rank than Gefreiter (which is very low in military hierarchy). The German army was the Wehrmacht, with military education like everywhere else. Their attitudes towards the state leader in this time were loyalty and obediance - they where not educated to question this; and so they did that only slowly and with hesitation. And they hesitated too long. Hitler knew very well, that they didn't accept his military leadership without pain. And he recruited from the NSDAP for his aims first the SA (Sturm-Abteilung = Attack Division - the "Brown Hordes") and among his absolute followers the SS (Schutzstaffel = Safeguard Squadron) - an army besides the Wehrmacht, with elite soldiers in different uniforms and with the best weapons. The Wehrmacht often was afraid of them, whereever they appeared.
  19. The further aircraft got developed, the more energy they used/produced. The Lockheed Starfighter was almost a rocket with wings; modern jet fighters almost all can climb vertical on their jet engines. WW1 air combat is about craft with little forward pull energy. Climb was a combi of forward energy (motor) and lift (wing surfaces). More speed could only be gained by getting the nose below horizon. So what you find here, is much more about less energetic and more lift-dependend flying. And it makes sense, that these slower craft do use rudder a lot for turning and manoeuvering. WW1 air combat is much more about the art of sailing, than about the art of motorboat racing, so to say.

    Against Camels, I'd prefer the Dr.1 - in the Albatros versions, it would be almost impossible against a real human pilot. I know you can add names to the name list of each Nation, but not to the ace list, I believe. But wingmen may well have names of your friends.
  23. Udet let himself get caught by the Devil's Offer. His old comrade Goering sent him to America to get two aeroplanes - one for Germany's studies, and one for Udet. When Udet had got a high position, and realised, what he was taking part in, he found himself entangled, and it was too late. Among friends, he said already 1941, that the war was lost. But the only way out he saw was a bullet.

    Okay, Captain, don't forget to set up a huge powerful fan, blowing through a fridge into your face, plus a leaking can of Castor Oil above in front of it! That must give you "Realism: 220 %" Lol!
