  1. Everybody here on the south coast of Massachusetts (and Cape Cod) was battening down the hatches right and proper. We were filling 5-gal. buckets with fresh water and storing them in the bath tub. (we're all on well water out here, so if the power goes out, so does the electric pump.) Stocked non-perisable food. The received wisdom was that we were going to get hammered. In the event, it began to blow around twilight and increased until 10:00 when it was blowing very, very hard. That tapered off and it rained thru the night in torrential, but short, bursts. The next day was overcast, scattered showers and gusty. And that was it. I didn't lose power once, and this end of the local power grid is ancient, and we can lose power, usually briefly, in mid-summer. We had the same expectations last year, with the same result.
  2. The biggest victim of Sandy...
  3. Thinking about my Dad today

You are descended from a heavy-hitter, Simon.
  4. 7:00pm Thursday night: all seems well at SimHQ.
  5. We could buy it ourselves. I'll put up up the initial bid of $69.
  6. Which means what? Is our new "official" site going belly-up? Is SimHQ giving up, or is this a clerical lapse? (I nearly lost my domain name, but saved it at the last moment.) Is it currently (like right now) up for bid?
  7. I'd like to reccomend this film (Beneath Hill 60). It's an account of Australian miners recruited to dig shafts under German lines. Hill 60 was on the Messine Ridge in Belgium. It is said that the blast was felt as far away as Dublin. It's available on Netflix, and Netflix Instant if you've got that.
  8. Okay were is everybody ?

Then you'll enjoy the American version, which is to "give somebody a good shellacing". (though I haven't heard it used in years.) Ooops! Just noticed that this has been mentioned. I guess one should read all of Page 2 before replying to Page 3.
  9. http://news.yahoo.co...tory-slideshow/ Found this on Yahoo! A photographer is taking WWII photos and ghosting them over the same locations in modern Europe.
  10. OT--Ghost Images from WWII...

Even in some American towns (Concord and Lexington come to mind) some of the very oldest houses have bullet holes that date from the revolution. These are carefully tended and pointed to with great pride
  11. OT--Ghost Images from WWII...

The agents of the People's Socialist Paradise did not, as a rule, undertake to repair bullet holes (which they had made) in the property of those whom they had been formerly shooting at.
  12. OT--Ghost Images from WWII...

No spookier than imagining some poor soldier trying to man a MG in one of those windows, in the face of the s**t-storm happening right outside.
  13. OT--Ghost Images from WWII...

Which leads one to wonder, how do you go about losing a Me-262? Did they just come to work one morning and it was gone?
  14. Okay were is everybody ?

    deplume? Sounds serious.
  15. Wikipedia! Of course. I should have just gone there first; but thanks, Olham. it's a great article. What I specifically wanted to know about was the aerial destruction of planes, and those were large radio-controlled models. Sure looked real to me.
  16. While we're on the Battle of Britain, I watched it again last night. It holds up pretty well. But one thing plagued me as I watched: how did they stage all those burning, exploding aircraft. Not just the ones with white smoke bombs attched, but the ones that actually blew up? The Heinkle-111's were rented from the Spanish airforce and had to be returned.
  17. Since I've been flying Microsofts ETO Sim again, I've gotten used to the green targeting cone. I know this can be summoned up in OFF thru CFS3, but can't recall where to find it. Can somebody give me a clue? Thanks.
  18. OT- Artwork of Harry Dempsey

You're right. Harry Dempsey has a very small footprint on the web. So far, all I could find is a brief write-up and this pic. Checked out many print and poster sites, but nothing of his turns up for sale.
  19. The CFS3 Targeting Cone...

Right! If the pilots of 1916 had targeting cones in their cockpits, they would have used them and loved it.
  20. The CFS3 Targeting Cone...

Yeah, I know you were joking...but the other lads in the mess, well, they can be merciless.
  21. The CFS3 Targeting Cone...

OK, that did it. The "T" key gave me aircraft only on the TAC, and the Tab key brought up the cone...I'm in business. Of course, now I'll always be known as the wussy Yank that needs the TC.
  22. The CFS3 Targeting Cone...

Really. And I thought this would be a quick, simple question and not stir too much dust.
  23. The CFS3 Targeting Cone...

I only know the Targeting Cone from CFS1 (ETO) and it's always on as long as there's an enemy in the air. How do I select a target in CFS3 or OFF?
  24. The CFS3 Targeting Cone...

I use the "I" key and get a screen notice saying "Target Cone On" and "Target Cone Off", but the cone itself does not appear. I just launched CFS3; same thing. Gremlins in the works!
  25. The CFS3 Targeting Cone...

It certainly is. But it doesn't seem to matter whether I check the box or not. The cone does not appear. Right above it is 'Disable Tactical Display. I can make that come and go, but no Targeting Cone.
