Medals awarded come with a ribbon with a pin-clasp back so the ribbon can be worn daily and the actual medal kept for special occasions. ( I'm assuming here that this practice dates back to WWI) Might your great-uncle have simply pinned the ribbon to the suspension ribbon for convenience? Or to keep the two together in one place?

I'm in! Where do I send it?
-
They will be much worse in P4.
-
...or two weeks after!
-
Well done, UKW! Now perhaps you can spin that off into a weekly sit-com!
-
Thanks, Pol.

A few weeks back I thought I saw a reference to 'multi-player' no longer possible, or, problems with it. I didn't pay real close atttention. Did I simply mis-read the post?

An OFF 1 Diversion Whilst We Wait For OFF 2:
Hauksbee replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Good on you, RAF_Lou! I have yearned to fly a Bleriot Just as I have yearned to know what it was like to fly a Farman, a Curtis Pusher, a Taube and an Antoinette. Of course, if all these turned up in OFF I'd (probably) only fly them once or twice since they were more squirrely and under-powered than the E.III. But...thanks for the hard work! -
OT My Favourite War Film
Hauksbee replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Reading all these comments keeps jogging my memory, making me revise my opinions. At this point, I'd submit "Schindler's List". It's not a combat-war movie, but I feel it's a brilliant film, both in writing and photography, and when all is said and done, the events portrayed are true. -
Can you tell us why, or is it classified?

Amen! to that...and e-beers all 'round. But may I ask why we were asked to leave the previous Forum? Were we making too much noise for the neighbors?

OT-"Ground Resonace" tears helicopter in half.
Hauksbee posted a topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Ran into this while perusing headlines this morning. Not sure what "Ground Resonance" is, but sure trashed this chopper. http://news.yahoo.co...-224458312.html The article had this to say: "It was the most stunning helicopter accident Para, Brazil has ever seen. And it all happened without the helicopter even leaving the ground. The shocking destruction of the plane was caused by a phenomenon called ground resonance. Like an out-of-balance washing machine, the plane starts shaking more and more violently until the force tears it in half. Though the destruction was pretty epic, no one was hurt in the accident. They're probably going to need to buy a new helicopter, though." Turns out there was a link describing Ground Resonance: Ground resonance is a hazardous condition that can occur any time the rotor of a helicopter or gyroplane is turning while the aircraft is on the ground. Similar in concept to the behavior of a washing machine when the clothes are concentrated at one point during the spin cycle, ground resonance can occur with a rotorcraft when the spacing between blades becomes irregular or the damping system, including drag hinge dampers, landing gear oleo struts, or wheel tire pressure, is operating out of limits. Ground resonance occurs at three rotor rpm bands, the first at about one-third of normal rotor speed, the second at a range including normal rotor speed, and the last in a range above normal rotor speed. Ground resonance is precipitated by a shock to the aircraft arising from excessive motion of a rotor blade in its plane of rotation thereby moving the rotor center of gravity from the axis of rotation. Inadequate damping allows the rotor center of gravity to spiral away from the rotor axis of rotation, causing the rotor to generate unbalanced rotating moments beyond the compensating ability of the damping system. In addition to damping system malfunctions mentioned above, such blade movement can occur as a result of taxiing over rough ground with the rotor turning at a speed within a susceptible range, or takeoff/landing in which a shock occurs to one side of the landing gear. Under extreme conditions, the initial shock can cause violent oscillations that quickly build and result in catastrophic damage of the entire airframe. In some cases, complete destruction occurs, e.g. body panels, fuel tanks, and engines are torn away, even at normal rotor speed. Recovery is possible in some cases. If sufficient rotor RPM exists, immediate takeoff can restore rotor balance. If rotor RPM is low, complete shutdown may be sufficient -
Here in Massachusetts, we're paying around $3.86 per US Gallon. From what I've been reading lately, the price of oil (crude) is largely driven by commodity futures traders who bid up the price hoping to sell off the contract (paper oil) before they have to take possession. Paraphrasing from the book in hand, "Speculation in oil, or so-called 'paper oil' has grown exponentially in recent years. Volume increased from $13 billion to $300 billion in the five years leading up to the 2008 price peak, when 27 barrels of crude were being traded every day on the New York Mercantile Exchange for every 1 barrel of oil actually being consumed in the United States. At the time, there were no disruptions to justify the price increase, and demand was actually falling. In a 2009 interview on 60 Minutes, Dan Gilligan, President of Petroleum Marketers Association, explained what this all means. "Approximately 60 to 70% of the oil contracts in the futures markets are now held by speculative entities. Not by companies that need oil, not by airlines, not by the oil companies themselves. But by investors that are looking to make money from their speculative positions...All they do is buy the paper, and hope that they can sell it for more than they paid for it." For you Europeans who clocked in here: you are absolutely correct. We in America have scant idea about how lucky we are. Our difficulty is, that in America things are usually far apart, while in Europe, things tend to be closer together. We have lower prices, but must spend more time in our cars.

...and let us not even start to discuss the aerodynamics of bumblebees, or pollination as we know it will end. -
A small update here: The GTX 560 card arrived on Wednesday. My computer guy tried to install it on Thursday, but we're having the Devil's own time trying to get the drivers to install. NVidia's drivers on the disc, plus downloads from their site, always fail. This problem, combined with some other minor, but squirrely, things going on with my machine, may call for a fresh Windows install. Stay tuned.

I guess I'm just a bit slower than the rest of the children, but throughout this thread, I've gone on the assumption that "Over Flanders Fields" would be retained, and the sub-title "Between Heaven and Hell" was what we were talking about. Would our Devs actually jettison "OFF"?

Where did Red Baron go after Jan 20 1917?

I thought he was always in 'stealth' mode. -
Will do.

In the course of trying to settle my "Cliffs of Dover" woes, my computer-tech guy reccomended the card he's currently using, the EVGA. GTX 560. So confident was he that this would be satisfactory, that he has offered to buy it from me if I'm not happy. With a recomendation like that, what could I do?

Somebody draft that lad into the BOC and get him up to speed!

In any event, for a truly immersive WWI experience, the pilots doing the actual flying simply must have something to b***h and grouse about. 'Just wouldn't do to have the higher echelons be too responsive.

wooo...look what I just got hold of :)

A wise decision. RC models are nothing but heartbreak. And endless hours of repair. I have a buddy in California who got bitten by the RC bug. In no time at all, he had ten times his initial investment in repairs...and that assumed his labor came free. -
