...and now you'll have a yard big enough to land your Snipe.

Was he a professional illustrator, or were these done just for his own pleasure?

OT: Life in the Trenches, A New Respect
Hauksbee replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
When you say 'Flanders', you're basically talking about Holland, most of which is below sea level. Dig a hole, any hole, and you'll strike water. -
I recall reading about a young German Lieutenant who, in 1918, watched his section of the trenches crumble under the combined weight of infantry backed by tanks and aircraft. It made an impression that he never forgot. His name was Heinz Guderian.

TV or Monitor advice again please

Do you have a laptop? Pot OFF on that and bring your joystick. -
Somehow I just never figured Widowmaker for a Carp.

I think the D-VIII is an elegant airplane, but I find it impossible to deal with the thickness of the top wing and its closeness to the fuselage. Even with all advantages of TrackIR, it's like trying to peer through a letter slot in a door. With most planes, you can see the labels through the wing. Not in the D-VIII. Anyone out there who deals successively with this?

This ground has probably been crossed many times (but I've been away for a while) and I've got the itch to fly an Albatros against the DH2 and see what happens. Maybe fly enough single combats in both planes and collect enough FRAPS clips to put together a 'von Richtofen vs Hawker' movie. I looked up von Richtofen's D.II in the skins and it wasn't red. I looked at D-III's and his D.V. The D.V had a red fuselage, but green wings. Did he ever fly an all red plane? I know from past threads here that even his Dr.I had some green panels. Is the all-red plane simply a legend?

I wonder if we'll get a Xmas release?

Interesting? In retrospect. Aggravating at the time. I loved China; hated the job. 'Took a while to appreciate Christmas again. -

Thanks, Olham. The D.V with the red fuselage and green wings in the skins threw me off. (Didn't have time to look yesterday, but, is the all-red one in there?) It's the Dr.1 that has me scratching my head. I'm sure the subject came up in one of the threads on this Forum and it was shown that the Dr.1 had some olive green. I must be mis-remembering. -

One of the worst jobs I ever had was as a giftware designer in Shenjin, China. (just north of Hong Kong on the mainland) I thought I could stomach a year of designing figurines of duckies and bunnies, cute children, angels (lots of angels!) and mermaids...but I was completely unprepared for Christmas! It starts in January with sketches of things as the American companies decide on what next years line will be. By March\April they go to the sculptors. By May\June the finished sculptures go to the factories for mold making. By July \August the production run is finished. In September, the goods are shipped and by that time the real holiday season has arrived. It was bloody brutal. -

Then all we'll hear is his laughter as he shreds them one by one. I take it from your comments on turns that the D.VIII is more of an 'Energy' fighter than a 'Turn and Burn' fighter. -

This is true. And P4 will only have four planes. If you fly for the Allies you can choose the Vickers F.B.5 or the AVRO 504J, for the Germans, the Rumpler Taube or the Aviatik B-II. In 2015, the Devs will release the Fokker E.III and the Albatros C, plus the Nieuport Bebe' and the Bristol Scout D. (and you'll be damned happy to get them!) In 2016...well, you get the idea. It is claimed that this will take 'immersion' to new heights. (for my part, I'll give up flying altogether, start playing 'Panzer Leader' and volunteer for the Eastern Front before going up in any of those crates!) -

It's not that it flies badly, (Ernst Udet traveled Germany after the war giving hair-raising demos at air shows with a D-8) it's the visibility. Even at full zoom-out, there's A LOT OF wing and the further back you zoom, the smaller that letter-box sight-window gets. And...once again, I note that nobody is stepping up and saying, "Hey! My kill rate went through the roof when I strapped on my first D-8. This is a great plane." -

A workable solution if the enemy is below you, but a pilot who flew in Korea told me, "Dogfights start high and fast; end up low and slow." And if you're at the same level, trying to slip in on his six, after the first shot he'll start bobbing and jinking and be impossible to see in that letterbox slot. If he does a Split-S, you'll never see him again. Lining up a deflection shot is out of the question. If you get down in the weeds, the best technique would be to land the plane and try to walk home. -
Here y' go! Amazon is where I got mine. The Thrustmaster has rudder and to spare. Often the nose swings past the target and I've had to learn to use it lightly. The one I'm using is the second down in the list. http://www.amazon.co...ix=Thrustmaster

No, you have caught me totally unawares. This is great stuff. I'll bookmark the lot and go through it all again in greater detail. Thanks much, RAF_Lou.

Or, as the rascally Harry Flashman might say: "Nicely titted out". Are we off topic yet?
