Certainly the Fokkers had a square-ish, boxy look to them.

Here's my Rumpler Taube for Runway Eye-Candy. One more to go: the Voisin-Farman (Box Kite) After that I'm going to concentrate on texturing. . .
-
Thanks Widowmaker. The Taube was a bit difficult. It just wouldn't come into focus. It kept needing more and more details to make it look "real" and I kept getting more and more concerned about the polygon count. 'Don't want to bring WOFF to its knees for the sake of some runway eye-candy.

The Dawn Patrol Rendezvous at Wright-Patterson A.F.B. All-in-all, it was a little smaller, a little thinner than I expected, but the trade-off was that there was no admission charged. Just drive in. It was nearly impossible to find. Signage was next to nil. But I'd rented a car, and Wright-Patt was huge, so I figured that I'd just drive east 'til I hit it, then look for something official (like a guard shack, or a manned gate) and ask directions. Luck brought me to the entrance of the U.S.A.F. Flight Museum. As I approached the building, I saw a hand-made sign on a stick saying "WWI Fly-In". It had to be close. (Luck had patted me on the head again). That, and others like it, led me around the building and through various parking lots, until I came to the end of the paved area and found myself facing a huge grass field with runways. 'Way-the-hell-and-gone across that, and up against the tree line was what appeared to be a mass of parked cars and white tents. I turned around to search out a way to get there and noticed a double line of florescent road cones marking a lane across the grass with lots of fresh tire tracks. This put me on a beat-to-hell tarmac road which led to another double line of cones across more grass and suddenly I was driving down a runway. Which made me a tad nervous. I would not have been surprised to see a Jeep with MP's appear and ask what I was doing, but just then a guy with a red flag stepped out and directed me in among the cars. I had arrived. I walked in and checked it out. Not much was going on. It was Saturday morning and there was a wicked cross-wind which discouraged flying. (Rain was threatening, but never arrived and Sunday was gorgeous) The first thing I noticed was all these little-bitty airplanes. They were, for the most part, 3/4 scale home-builts tricked out to look like something historical. I knew I was not going to see real, WWI airplanes, but I did expect full-sized modern replicas. No such luck. This was a gathering of garage-builders. Later it turned out that there was a SPAD (tho' re-engined which disguised it) a Sopwith Pup, and (I think) a Nieuport) These did not fly. The photos don't convey the sizes well, standing next to the cockpits, one wondered how a full-grown man could possibly shoe-horn himself into one. I'd expect to see the sides of the fuselage flex in-and-out every time the pilot took a deep breath. . . . . . . . . . . The WOFF Flight Simulator corner .

The Dawn Patrol Rendezvous...
Hauksbee replied to Hauksbee's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Jim: Don't quite know how that happened, but we were all milling about. Something about Brownian Movement amonst WOFF pilots... -
In looking at aerial photos of WWI airfields, the one thing that pops out is that there are (frequently) several different kinds of aircraft parked in front of hangars and along the runways. Which is eminently reasonable; several different squadrons sharing the same airfield. In the past, I have made several forays into 3D modeling WWI aircraft, but I have neither the patience, nor the skills, to build super-accurate, richly detailed models that you can (virtually) walk right up to, much less sit in. So I've decided to focus on building models that are static and work when seen at a distance. The current modding enthusiasm for airfields in WOFF seems like the perfect place. So here's the first: a Caudron G.3. It will require a prop and some additional texturing, but, for all intents and purposes, it's finished. The G.4 is next up. .

Runway Eye Candy: Morane-Salnier N 'Bullet'...
Hauksbee replied to Hauksbee's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Sorry. This series is only to populate runways with planes from other types of squadrons. -
While doing a Google search on Voisin.III aircraft, I reached a page that had scads of aircraft, but mixed in were dozens of the most beautiful Art Deco automobiles I'd ever seen. I never knew Voisin was into cars. If any of these were still in production, I'd be feeding an iron piggybank right now in anticipation of owning one. .
-
Finished this today. Think I'll tackle something less complex like a Morane-Saulnier N Bullet. .
-
That's an impressive list. Caudron especially, came a long way from the delicate little butterflys it built for WWI.

These engines powered airplanes too?

Robert Wiggins converted my model to an .m3d and took it into WOFF. Here's what it looks like in flight. . -

Good advice, Geezer. I changed to color and they look world's better already. I read the link you included. I'll copy that over into my Master Mod folder and keep it in long-term memory. . -
Designed To Be Seen From Afar...
Hauksbee replied to Hauksbee's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Thanks Geezer. I'm a little concerned that the bracing wires are too thick, but the choices are between (1) visible at a distance, and (2) accurate and invisible. I'll wait until I get one imported into WOFF and massage the model if it needs it.
