Everyone here has heard my sad tales of "stalling and falling" as I tried to come to grips with 1916/1917 planes. You'll hear a lot of it around here. These planes, in real life, were underpowered, frequently designed by inspired amateurs, and had utterly viscious flying characteristics. So they are in OFF, except the OFF planes won't kill you in training accidents. I got my first success with the SE-5. It's got enough built-in stability that it goes where you point it and enough power to fight off stalls. Try the two-seaters. They're more docile. But you're not alone on the learning curve. Stick with it.

Question reg OFF´s Ernst Udet Fok D7 OAW skin
Hauksbee replied to DerMo's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
It's been a long time since my high school German, but I read it as, "You still can't!" Can one of our resident Jasta jockeys render a judgement? -
Hitler Parody: Over Flanders Fields
Hauksbee replied to Launchbury's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I think it would be difficult to see the humor if you speak German. It's funny because of the tension between what he's really on about, and what a translator tells you he's saying. If FDR, or Churchill, were raving about something, and the OFF material was in German, I'm sure it would fall flat with me. Being an English speaker, the english would register first, then I'd have to read the German...but it wouldn't be funny. -
What's your favorite WWI Movie?
Hauksbee replied to Duce Lewis's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I could not agree more. Stories could be much improved by making the characters conflicted about the right course of action. When you pit a crusty old professor type [with a cute girl lab assistant] against a rabid General who believes major firepower is the only way...guess who's the good guy, and who not? Once, back in the day, I was taken to an acting seminar. Each person did a short monolog which was then critiqued by the visiting Prof. One student, who acted a villain's part, was asked what he thought of his character. The student replied, 'He's a pretty bad guy." The Prof. came back with "That's your mistake. Villains always think they have it right. The worst things are done by people who think their actions are pure, or reasonable." Sometimes, the rabid General is right. Sometimes wrong. But there's no reason to let the audience know that too soon. -
At the 50 sec. mark, just as he picks up the handkerchief, you can see the wing-strut on that side. It appears to be broken. Am I seeing this right?

Reason for screen name....
Hauksbee replied to DukeIronHand's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Another was the Me-110 which was too heavy as a fighter, morphed into the '210' which was a money-pit-boodoggle, which became the '410' which finally flew. The problem seems to be that the 'suits' kept changing, or adding on, to the mission. A plane to please everyone, and failed at most everything. But the Germans have no lock on that. Read a good biography of John Boyd, an Air Force major who made planes lkike the F-15 and the F-22 possible. His whole career was an uphill fight against the 'multi-purpose airplane'. -
TrackIR4 and old pedals to sell cheap
Hauksbee replied to HomeBoy's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
If Broadsides friend doesn't take the pedals, I will. ps: or both if you'd like to do only one transaction. -
Reason for screen name....

During the times when I was writing my own stories for Underground Comix, I kept a notebook with me at all times in case an idea, or tasty bit of information, happened by. Needing character names, I jotted down names as I found them. One of them was Francis Hauksbee, 1687-1763, scientific instrument maker and experimenter. -
ALERT!---TO ALL OUR FRIENDS IN EUROPE--ALERT! After checking the maps at the beginning of this thread, I see that the North Atlantic Ocean has been re-positioned on the front doorstep of the Carribean. This means that the Gulf Stream will be cancelled until further notice. If you live north of Spain, now would be a good time to get out a heavy jacket and a pair of mittens.

Post a pic of your town
Hauksbee replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Close enough! Sign him up, Olham. -
Allright, then. I see Uncle Al met you at the front gate. Survive that, and you'll have no problem with the Boche. Grab any unused bunk, get settled, and as soon as your crate arrives from depot, we'll get to the rest. You will find many questions to post here. Looking forward to hearing from y'.

How very nice! Do you attribute this simply to increased awareness of WWI sims, or 'buyers remorse'? Or perhaps just an insatiable lust for more planes?

It's good to see that, after he broke his self-imposed silence, a grateful nation heaped honors upon him, rather than waiting to speak at graveside.

Hitler Parody: Over Flanders Fields
Hauksbee replied to Launchbury's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
While I'd not heard that he had a jewish elocution teacher, I've seen photos he had taken of himself posturing in dramatic poses. And he routinely practiced his speeches in front of a mirror for maximun effect. The photos were ordered destroyed, lest his 'show biz' side be revealed, and his sincerity questioned. While I thought the clip hilarious, I take Olham's point too. -
Dardanelles Campaign Video Teaser
Hauksbee replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Well done! Looks great. Don't know if I would have flown so close to the ridgeline there at the beginning. You seemed to be close to the same altitude as the incoming shells from the ships. Is it even possible to be hit by a naval shell in this sim? Does their fire 'see' planes? -
Another Item for my Dardanelles Campaign
Hauksbee replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Aha! Right path, wrong website. I've had Doves and Hawks bookmarked for some time. I guess now's the time to go ahead and join. "...because the wings folded." Of course. Suddenly, the obvious becomes visible. (lol) Thanks. -
Another Item for my Dardanelles Campaign
Hauksbee replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
OK! I'm sold. I have to have one. I went to the CombatAce>OFF>Downloads>Models, but I don't see the Short. Is it right under my nose (always possible) or in a different place? ps: how did it get the "Folder" part of its name? -
Just got back from chasing a pair of Brisfits with a Dr.I...in the rain. Did WWI pilots ever wear some sort of face-shield when flying in the rain? I recall from days on a motorcycle, rain drops hitting one's face at 60mph were painful. It could only get worse at 120mph/10,000 ft./ +wind chill.

The Short, Multi-Player, and General OFF Excitement
Hauksbee replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Al, you silver-tongued devil, you make it sound almost appealing. But I figure, if I got an E.III to behave for me, [not that I could ever take it into a fight] mayhap I could get a Short pointed at the target. Battleships don't jink around too much, and hitting one from a string-bag like the Short must be very satisfying. Dej: Thanks for the drawings. That Triplane+ is definitely a cousin to Vasco's. -
Reminds me of [and it well may be...] a pic. of a Mosquito testing its guns. I say, 'well may be...' because the props are stationary.
-
Spot on, Homeboy. It seems that the Stickies [which I consult regularly...] have been slowly crowding the day-to-day stuff into less-and-less space. Rookies will have no problem finding our accumulated wisdom. Uncle Al will quick-march the pups to class. [Wait for it...]

MiGawd! How did they shoe-horn themselves into the cockpit? I suspect we're seeing the outer limit of "how-much-clothing-can-you-pack-onto-a-person"? If what they have doesn't keep them warm, an extra jacket and a pair of socks isn't going to help much.
-
Yes, and Olham's picture underscores that quite well. Sorry I missed the thread on clothing. The thought first occurred when I saw a German pilot in one of the pot-boiler WWI films [Richtofen & Brown?] wearing a face mask. It made emminent good sense to me. 'Turns out, he was just another two-dimensional baddie trying to look scarey. [yawn!]
