  1. OT-private rant

Working in a medical profession, I can only support your rant. The overwhelming majority of emphysema cases are caused by smoking. It's not pretty, and it's not a pleasant way to go. Our lungs get more than enough pollution just by breathing in the city air, there's no need to make it even worse by voluntarily poisoning yourself.
  2. That's a problem with modern computer-generated graphics. It's so easy to do things with computers that it gets out of hand very often. When they had to use actual models with wires and things like that, there was no room to pack every scene full of aircraft. The aerobatics would also look more believable in their own way, with no totally crazy manouevers.
  3. Legends in Flight

I've always liked the shapes of all Fw 190 fighters. The Spitfire is a beauty too. The Italians actually designed some great aircraft during WW2. Their Serie 5 fighters, like the Fiat G.55 and the Macchi C.202, were excellent. The Germans were planning to take the former into production, because it performed even better than the Bf 109 and Fw 190 under certain conditions. But in the end that didn't happen, because the Bf 109 was much faster and cheaper to manufacture. Italian aircraft production was hampered by poor engines. Things improved dramatically when they started to build Daimler-Benz engines under license. But that happened too late in the war to have a major impact on anything.
  4. "Historical accuracy" and "Hollywood" are not compatible with each other. That has been proven so many times that there's no point to expect things to be any different with this film. That's just the way things are in the film industry, and not only in Hollywood. There are exceptions of course, but they are rare.
  5. Dawn Flight

It's almost like he's flying through heavy snowfall. I like that effect.
  6. Maybe your pilots should become Mercedes shareholders? They could then profit by trying to fight mostly against Brisfits. Capitalism at its best!
  7. The Biff gunners are experts at destroying German scout engines. I've lost countless engines attacking them. Those two Lewis guns are absolutely deadly. I've read that in real life, it was easier for the observer to handle a single Lewis, because having two guns made the mounting heavier and slower to move.
  8. The Biff was actually faster than any German fighters it encountered. It was also very manoeuverable, especially for a two-seater. Not an opponent you want to attack poorly prepared as a scout pilot.
  9. It goes directly to brain through the ear channel. The bone is quite thin there, which makes it possible for the light to penetrate it easily.
  10. Actually I've been thinking of buying a small light device that is put inside the ear and activated for a few minutes each day. There have been good results from using the device. But obviously nothing quite matches the real thing, a clear blue sky with the Sun shining brightly.
  11. This time of year sucks badly. I hate it. A couple of dark and cold winter months to endure before it gets easier. Hard to feel optimistic about anything, but I'm trying.
  12. Correct pronunciation for Breguet?

Not easy targets, though, being very fast and tough and having two rear guns. I'd love to see them in OFF!
  13. It will be interesting to see how much the AI has been improved in P4. It's a very important factor - even decisive - for a great single player experience.
  14. I play RoF online with a couple of guys I know, and it's great fun. The flight and damage models are great. But the single player mode is not even close to OFF. So when I want to fly WW1 crates with other humans, I have RoF, and when I want to fly a great and immersive single player career, I have OFF.
  15. OT: 2012 Is The Year I Do It

Try cross-country skiing. It's a great way to lose weight. You should have enough snow in Minnesota for that, correct? Good luck with the Battle of the Bulge.
  16. Yo!

Welcome back! In my case, OFF works better on Win 7 64 bit than it did on my XP machine. I don't have to use any special settings to make it work well.
  17. Happy New Year all

Happy New Year! Let's hope this one will be better than the previous. It's also the Year of P4.
  18. Otto Splitgerber letter home

Let's hope Cash's grandma can translate it before Olham gets back.
  19. Otto Splitgerber letter home

Could be. I'm definitely no expert in this.
  20. OT: Back in two weeks

Have fun! And don't eat too much greasy food.
  21. Otto Splitgerber letter home

It's not actually Sütterlin, which came into use only in the 1920s or 1930s (it was invented in the 1910s) but the earlier form of German handwriting (Kurrentschrift). Here's a link to Wikipedia: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsche_Kurrentschrift The same handwriting style was used in Sweden (and Finland) until the early 19th century, when it was replaced by the modern style, which was in use for centuries earlier in Western and Southern Europe. Both Sütterlin and Kurrentschrift are difficult to read, because many of the letters look very different from the modern style - "r" for example looks like "w". I'm not even going to try translating it. It would take hours. But some guys can read it just like that.
  22. Merry Christmas

    Merry Christmas!
  23. I agree. And there's always room for more than a one flight sim in my PC. They all complement each other.
  24. Does P4 get it's own name?

I can't remember who suggested it, but I really like the title "Fire in the Sky." Yes, I know there's a book with that same title. OFF - FITS.
  25. Albatros BII

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Front_%28World_War_I%29 It took several months to design the interrupter gear.
