  1. You're right, Flyby. Even during Bloody April, when the British squadrons suffered extremely heavy casualties, the recon and bomber aircraft kept flying and doing their duty, supporting the ground troops. The Germans couldn't prevent that. If every month had been like Bloody April, then the RFC would have been devastated sooner or later. But that didn't happen. Actually this reminds me of the submarine warfare of WW2. The German U-Boat fleet was undoubtedly powerful and posed a serious threat to the British war effort. But they weren't powerful enough. A few particularly successful months weren't enough to do the job.
  2. In Göring's case, I think it's obvious that many writers are letting the later career of Göring affect their views about his career in WW1. But that is not how to write history in an objective way. And yes, the role of bomber and reconnaissance aircraft is often completely forgotten when discussing WW1 aviation history. It's all about fighters and aces, most of the time. That's why I'm flying two-seaters more than fighters in OFF. Olham, maybe this French site is helpful with the French statistics: http://albindenis.free.fr/Site_escadrille/page_centaine.htm
  3. Very interesting. I guess one must be careful when constructing buildings over the old WW1 battlefields. You'll never know what terrible contraptions are buried underground!
  4. Regarding Göring's kills, Peter Kilduff examined all of them when writing his book about Göring's WW1 career. He came to the conclusion that out of Göring's 22 credited victories, four are questionable. So it appears that the system worked pretty well even in Göring's case. Wow, how wrong it feels to defend even the early, pre-Third Reich career of Göring!
  5. It's amazing how people can start fighting over such reasons. No wonder our history is so full of wars and bloodshed. Anyway, that's a great graph! You already pointed out the most important reasons, I think. I'll just add one thing. Throughout the history of war in the air, the kill numbers have tended to cumulate on certain elite units and their aces. A guy like Manfred von Richthofen or René Fonck or James McCudden was responsible for a huge number of victories compared to the majority of pilots on either side. For every Richthofen and Fonck, there was a large number of pilots who never won a single victory. When top aces were collected together to form elite units like Jasta 11 or Escadrille 3, they tended to get the majority of all kills in their areas of operation. This is easy to see for example in OFF. Just look at the number of poor and average units compared to the number of elite ones. For example in Alsace you'll find many units, both French and German, that don't have many (or any) aces and whose performance in combat is less than stellar.
  6. In P4, transfers will be included without having to edit any files, just like it was in Red Baron. At least that's what I remember reading from some P4 threads. I hope I'm not wrong.
  7. OT We might have been killed

I work in a medical profession and often see all kinds of bad things. You get used to it over time. You just can't afford to dwell on such things, otherwise you will be of no use to anybody who needs help. But I think it might be different even for me if something terrible were to happen when I'm out of work, like a surprising car accident. I hope I'll never find myself in such a situation.
  8. P4 DEVELOPMENT SCREENSHOTS

Well, he did give some more. I knew I was lucky! Looks great. The Fee is an enjoyable crate already in P3, and I'm sure things will only get better in P4.
  9. P4 DEVELOPMENT SCREENSHOTS

I'm feeling lucky. Maybe he'll show mercy and gives some more.
  10. P4 DEVELOPMENT SCREENSHOTS

Time to bring this thread back to first page. More screenshots and maybe some revelations about career mode improvements etc. Pretty please?
  11. "Kaiserschlacht!"

    Emperor's Battle.
  12. If the brass hats tell me to take my flight to Jasta 2's area of operations, then that's where I'm going. C'est la guerre, even though I may not like it.
  13. Captain Bernard Greene, MC, is a pilot in No. 20 Squadron, flying the Fee in October 1916. Yes, the Albs have just arrived at the front.
  14. I've started flying again, using my best pilot. So far, so good. The weather's been so bad that I haven't encountered many enemy aircraft. But the Albs are out there somewhere, searching and hunting...
  15. OT We might have been killed

Good to hear nothing happened to you and your family, Widowmaker. And your story is indeed out of a horror movie, Olham! I've been to Norway several times with my own car, and I know well how dangerous some of the roads there can be. I guess I've been very lucky in that I've never been involved in any accident. I haven't even had any close calls, and I do drive a lot, because where I live in, it's practically a necessity to own a car, public transport being very inadequate. And the weather is often really bad, with freezing cold, snowstorms and slippery roads.
  16. "Kaiserschlacht!"

Paintings by Dietz are also great, but for some reason I prefer the style of Forbes. I don't know exactly why though. Maybe it's the use of colours. Another one for my huge collection of WW1 aviation art, if I were a rich man that is.
  17. I'd still buy it, thin booms or no. Looking forward to the book, JFM.
  18. I've said this before, but if I had a lot of money, I'd buy a truckload of such paintings and cover my walls with them. Excellent work. Interesting information regarding the DH aircraft, JFM. When will the book come out?
  19. OT - Ford

The more advanced the technology they use in cars becomes, the less reliable the vehicles are in cold weather conditions. That's been my experience. It's so very nice to have a HAL 9000 running things under the hood, but not so nice anymore when the temperature drops down enough and the fancy electronics decide they can't take it anymore. I'm actually looking for a new car (well, a used car that is newer than my current piece of junk metal), but I don't think I'm going to buy your van, Flyby PC.
  20. Fascinating. I wonder when they'll start building a Gotha?
  21. To tell the truth, I've recently been avoiding flying missions with my best pilot. I've invested so much time and effort into him that the thought of losing him is indeed difficult. I should get on with the year 1917, but it's hard. Still, King and Country need his services, and I can't delay their call forever.
  22. In the Rear Gunner's Seat

The effect of wind is something that unfortunately is difficult to model accurately in flight sims. The film shows well just how different it is to be in an open cockpit compared to sitting comfortably inside a modern jet. No matter how realistically we try to fly our crates in OFF, it'll never be the same as in real life.
  23. OFF is not getting to me!

I can just imagine myself collapsing from exhaustion after running those 900 metres. Are you already with the German Olympic team, Olham?
  24. Pronounce Focke-Wulf...

Yes, it is pronounced, as is the e at the end of Boelcke, to give a WW1-related example.
