My dear wife and I have been in the UK for the last three weeks, and are returning to Australia next Friday. We'll be spending the rest of our time visiting different places around Durham. Our son is here with his lovely wife and three of our precious grandchildren while he completes a doctorate in Biblical studies at Durham University. My dilemma is this: what easily obtainable, local ales should I be trying before we return? As I type I'm enjoying a very palatable (unchilled) Spitfire Kentish Ale as recommended by UK Widowmaker, but being from Kent, it's hardly local. Suggestions as to culinary accompaniments (other than crisps) for any recommended ales would be most welcome - although an ale and crisps is a treat in itself. Thanks in advance, Wallaroo

Regarding the RE8; an extract from a short history of 3Sqn AFC, in Chapter 3 (The Eyes of the Army) of 'Men and Machines of the Australian Flying Corps', published by Kookaburra Publications in the 1970's: QUOTE Despite the fact that an RE8 often had to contend with something like half a dozen fast enemy fighters, losses from these combats were relatively light and in quite a few cases resulted in another victory for the squadron score. One of the flight commanders, Capt E. J. Jones, seemed to attract German fighters in the same way that a honeypot attracts bees, and he was instrumental in two of his observers adding to the list with a Pfalz falling to the Lewis gun of Lt A. L. D. Taylor on 21st April (the day of Richthofen's death), and a Fokker triplane to Lt R. Hainsworth on 16th May. Unfortunately, another fight with triplanes four days later resulted in Jones being wounded and Taylor being killed, although the stricken pilot managed to reach his aerodrome. UNQUOTE

Those Hawker biplanes just looked so right. They - and the Gladiator - and the Avia 534. Don't get me wrong - my SE5a, my Camel and - maybe one day - my Snipe, are right up there too.

This is all too cryptic! The Fury was a single seater, land based fighter. The Hart was a two seater, land based army co-op/bomber. The picture shows a single seater, arrestor hook equipped, RN marked aircraft; which suggests maritime connections. Think of the maritime patrol / AEW aircraft, based on the de Haviiland Comet, in RAF Service. The mighty hunter from Genesis 10: Nimrod.

Suspiciously like Peter Jackson's exhausting to watch, brilliantly executed, panoramic screen presentation, titled something like 'Over the Lines', at the Australian War Memorial Museum in Australia's national capital (Canberra). One of the most immersive pieces of the cinematographer's art I've eve seen!!

It seems we're all happy to acknowledge the problem - and apportion blame - but what about the answer to it? I still say THE man (JC) gave us the answer: 'So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them . . .' (Matthew 7:12) Even if that means giving away to someone in real need what we've got and really don't need. But I keep forgetting - everybody's need is the same as mine, isn't it? We all need just a little bit more.

There is enough food to feed the entire worlds population, but we don't. There is fundamental greed throughout the Western Cultures of the world, where the Stupidly Rich give the least, and take the most....and Catch has said it perfectly! Until we start to give as well as receive, we are on the slippery slope...and if that leads to the demise of mankind..we have no-one to blame but ourselves...and the planet will be a much nicer place when we're gone! IMHO: It's not the fault of media moguls - it's not the fault of poltico-economic philosophies/theories/parties/governments. The blame lies with us - me and you. THE man had it right!
