  1. Hat In The Ring is a Must Have

I'm enjoying myself with the DH5 - it may be a better plane in OFF than it was in real life, especially for novice pilots like me
  2. hat in the ring

From my reading of lots of books about WWI flying, there is never a mention of altering fuel loads except for quick test flights, and after those the plane was refuelled up to max. The quirk would 'fly for about 2½ hours or until it was shot down' (War Story), and the other autobiographical pilots talk a lot about getting their engines right, and the trim right, but seemingly never about fuel except when they had to turn back because of a lack of it. After all, wasn't Lanoe Hawker shot down because he had to run away from a fight as he was running out of fuel. And the same possibly applies to Werner Voss. Maybe the Germans would fly with less fuel as they could be blown home by the prevailing westerly winds. Any Entente pilot would carry as much fuel as possible in order to fly home against a headwind.
  3. Hat in the Ring looks great but....

This forum and the people on it make OFF great!
  4. HITR First Impressions

I've just paid by Paypal. Waiting for my email download notification. Can't wait!
  5. I now have basically a new machine running Windows 7 Ultimate with newly installed versions of Trackir version 4 beta software, CFS3 and OFF. When I run CFS3, I get the blue leds on but in OFF I don't get the blue leds and TrackIr doesn't work. What is going on here?
  6. Now TrackIr doesn't spot OFF as a game

I have gone back to XP pro anyway after my joystick and webcam didn't work properly with 7. I reckon I'll wait a bit before trying again.
  7. Snow on the Bayou AGAIN

It last snowed here on 17th September 1981
  8. Movie and Book to occupy my time

I have a hardback copy of 'king of air fighters' by Ira Jones (later Wing Commander in WWII). Mannock was quite something and had a score much higher than his 'official' score. Btw that photo of him with the young French girl only surfaced this year after all that time.
  9. OT....Important Questions

If the bread is toasted, you have a primitive anti-gravity device called a 'CatToast'. If you strap enough of them to your car (preferably so they can rotate) you instantly solve the Carbon emissions and Global Warming problems. The animal rights activists won't like it though.
  10. OT....Important Questions

What do women want? (attributed to Freud and every man who ever lived)
  11. High in the Empty Blue

Remember the pilots for the top Jastas were specially selected and mostly aces. The Brits did not want to concentrate all their best pilots in one or two squadrons because of the morale effect it would have on the others. So rookie pilots were posted to all squadrons, 56 included.
  12. Poll: WinXP vs Win7

Cheers Morris, I didn't actually uninstall the Windoze 7 64-bit setup, I just added a 40Gb IDE drive to the machine and installed XP, TrackIR and OFF on that. After all the effort required to get the 64-bit to work (mostly) I will keep it there for a while for use with the internet, emails and Office stuff. As my machine at work is also XP pro 32 and my wife's new laptop has Vista Home Basic I am now dealing with 3 operating systems at once!
  13. Poll: WinXP vs Win7

I have gone 'back' to XP pro 32 and now everything works properly. Obviously one has to get all the correct drivers for Win 7 64 and they just aren't available for my hardware. At least I can now fly in OFF again. I have deleted my vote and re-voted for XP.
  14. As my joystick doesn't work properly I thought I would fly the bicycle in QC. It gets to 'initializing WWI' screen and then exits to the QC screen. I tried this is XP SP3 compatability mode and normal. Now I'll try the Model T ...... In fact it crashes back to the QC screen no matter what aircraft, bicycle or car I select. I'm off back to XP pro 32 bit on my other drive.
  15. French Air Service Tunic On A Budget

I was interested to see the picture of Guynemer wearing a French version of the Sam Browne belt, so I googled it and found this interesting Wikipedia article which includes a picture of the man himself. (for those who know all about it, don't bother to look ) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Browne_belt
  16. Anybody else using an eyefinity setup?

I do drink, but I don't smoke (for the last 12 years), I run cheapo old cars, so maybe I should splash out a bit on the pooter. But 3 screens is obvious spending. All the rest is not visible to SWAMBO.
  17. Anybody else using an eyefinity setup?

If I had a triple screen setup SWAMBO would hit me on the head with a frying pan. Or do the equivalent in words. I vote for the easy life
  18. Well I hadn't seen it before, and to see so many replicas flying at one time is amazing. I wonder how many of the planes actually have rotary engines rather than more modern radials. I remember watching the 'Blue Max' and noting that one of the DR1s had a rotary, much to my surprise.
  19. Anybody else using an eyefinity setup?

Yaysus. My whole computer isn't worth that much. I guess I'll have to carry on with my AMD 5200+ and 4670 graphics. And maybe I need a joystick that works. Are the Logitech ones any good? I say this because most of theirs are ambi and I am a sinister type.
  20. OT - Richard TODD

Damn. I used to have a video copy (recorded from the TV) of the film. It was interesting because of the shots of the genuine Lancasters as the film was made before all but one was melted down to make saucepans.
  21. "There was no beautiful British WWI aircraft". I am inclined to agree, although they did have a few that were good-looking in a utilitarian sort of way, like the SE5a and the Bristol F2B. And as for the Fee, the less said the better. Although I do like flying it in OFF. I must be a masochist.
  22. Poll: WinXP vs Win7

This copy is personally signed by Bill Gates
  23. That is why the Canadians (and the Americans trained by the Canadians like Lambert) were so successful in WWI. They arrived at the war with many hours of flying behind them. It is rather noticeable that the gap between the British and the Canadian pilots had evened out due to similar training in WWII. And the British sent many RAF men to Canada and Southern Africa to be trained due to the better weather there. So the military sometimes do not repeat their mistakes
  24. Poll: WinXP vs Win7

And now my web camera shows me upside down with no means of altering it. I am definitely thinking of running a dual boot setup and going back to XP pro 32 for some things, like OFF and Skype. I refuse to believe that my joystick and my camera both went wrong at the same time. Pity, for I quite like the 'look and feel' of 7 and it seems quick enough. Although some things have been moved about from XP and take a bit of finding now.
  25. Rooster - Babelfish doesn't do badly for a computer program: Super achievement. I how much work that was white. I at that time provided 2 already times news for phase.
