  1. With the cold nights drawing in, I've been getting all my sim stuff set up again, and of course FEG is up and running. Probelm is, the massive restriction in trying to look around you with either mouse tracking or head tracking (TrackIR 3). Some time ago I did know how to overcome the restrictions in angle but for the life of me I can't remember. Might have been edititng an ini file or something to do with the cat files but my mind is drawing a blank. Don't suppose any of you chaps could help jog the memory box at all? I know it's probably more realistic that a chap trussed up like a turkey in leather and crammed into a tiny cockpit probably didn't have the abilities of an owl, but it seems over blown having to do fast combat turns just check that my flight are still in formation. Cheers,
  2. The future of First Eagles

Could not agree more. Best mission generator in any sim ever. One of my biggest reasons for always coming back to FEG after so many years. I pretty much set everything to random so never the same fight twice, I just wish other sims would adopt something along these lines.
  3. What sims do you play?

Simwise, currently installed I have: First Eagles Gold WoFF Silent Hunter 3 Race 07 (plus all expansions) Project Cars.
  4. Hi all, Just re-installed FEGold after a long while but have run into several issues. Main one is framerate - its basically a slide show. I have tried all the obvious things such as run as admin, compatibility mode etc but no luck. Also tried setting graphics options to low, that did improve things a bit, but nowhere near enough to actually fly and fight. Also trying to exit the game using ESC in flight often causes the game to crash. All drivers on my system BTW are up todate. I used to fly this sim fine about a year ago on win 8 - but so far X is a no-go. This is a fresh install with Nov 2008 as the build and no mods installed nor any INI edits. Specs: Nvidia gtx960 12gb ram (DDR3 1600mhz) 1TB 5400rpm HDD If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful. WoFF is fantastic but I still miss this old stalwart. It has a charm of its own. Especially the quick mission generator - still one of the best in any flight sim IMHO.
  5. FE Gold on Win X

Happy to report, that after posting I went and flew a few more missions, and the crashing seems to have stopped. It hangs a for a moment on hitting ESC, but now drops back to the main menu. Now everything is working, I'm going to have to get all my mods re-installed. This sim really is a much underated little gem.
  6. From someone who's main interest in flightsimming is WW1 I agree with the idea for trimming down the subscetions, and putting them all into the WW1 section. CombatAce is mess to find the forum your looking for becuase of the amount of scrolling needed. Could it not be done like other forums where you click on the game title (ie Woff, first eagles etc) and then you see the subsections? It really would make browsing here more enjoyable. With that said I am still mostly lurker, occaisional poster in any forum I frequent, but those are just my observations.
  7. Worst would be the eindecker - the wing warping wierdo. Best (in woff and all other WW1 sims) - the Scout Experimental.
  8. FE Gold on Win X

@gterl - Awesome sir - you are a star! Back to playable even with all the bells and whistles on. Still get the odd crash on exit, but I can live with that. @Geezer - here is where I found them: http://enbdev.com/download.htm I chose the generic graphic mod, then when I had extracted the files I used the wrapper version. Works like a charm.
  9. Can confirm working fine on XP, and even with settings on low, its a Quantum leap graphically over OFF.
  10. Awesome news. Deffo looking forward to the improved AI. So any chance of a list of the plane set? If your in beta I don't imagine you will be adding any more crates before the official release.
  11. Well I'm only using HPW FM/EW mod and buddies damage mod, however I started an Esc Laf career to test this out. Yes you are right - they do seem to have the odd blind moment and hit the trees. Its also random - most of the times the flight makes it out fine, the next flight one or two slam into the trees. Very bizarre. I have noticed some of my flight climb out like rockets, and some climb out with at a very shallow climb angle. Could it be only some aircraft are being affected by the mod? Not sure if this helps at all, as I have not flown off in ages, so my memory is rather rusty regards these issues.
  12. Finally found my CFS3 disc 1, and so reinstalled OFF, after a long absence. However I'm finding the AI a little bit below expectations, especailly at low alt where it seems to think dolphin diving into the dirt is the best option for survival. I have heard that the Hitr expansion improves the AI drastically - is this so, and does it cure this lemming style behavior? Failing that do any of the mods improve the AI at all? Cheers in advance for any input chaps.
  13. Newguy Olham? I've actually an old hand at this! In fairness tho I'm not all that active on this forum, and I'm normally in the first eagles section. Still, I will stand you that drink for the well written and concise reply Actually its the devs who should buy you a drink, as I bought the expansion this afternoon based on your recommendation. Definately a step in the right direction. The AI seems to have lost the suicidal slam dive behaviour, so thats good. Funny enough on my first test flight, me in a N17 against an albi D2, I was so busy watching the AI that I slammed into the deck I've been playing with a few of the settings you mention, but it still sometimes lacks a little vim and vigour. Still early days, and there are certainly enough other improvments to have made the purchase worth while, so thanks for the help sir.
  14. Cliffs of Dover

Just a quick heads up - at time of this posting, Gamefly has Clod on sale for £2.50. Less than a pint of the finest, so prolly worth a punt if your still on the fence.
  15. In total agreement with red here, the sounds in OFF were its weakest link. I had no end of troubles with sound separation as well - both friendly and hostile aircraft had a louder engine and gun sounds than my own crate, even when they were at distance. In a full 10 aircraft dogfight I struggled to hear my own engine and guns at all, and no matter what I did with the sound settings or my soundcard eliminated this. Really hope the devs are gonna give this area some loving in OFF2.
  16. Patch 1.22 Is Out

At long last they finally fixed the N.17 - you can actually fight with it now. Hell you can even dive in it
  17. Hi all, I am trying to get back into FE1 after an extended time in RoF's virtual skies, but I am struggling. My main issue is my wingmen - they seem to just line up like ducks to be shot down, and not a lot else. I cannot for the life of me find any commands to make them do much else other than this death ride flight. In 15 sorties I have only twice had them actually tangle with the enemy, and even then they were toast in a matter of minutes. Whilst RoF wingmen are dumb they at least try to survive. This is absolutely ruining any fun I used to find in this game for me at the present. I'm using Petero1s FM's, and everything is set to realistic, enemy set to Hard. And one last quick question - is my aircraft weaker in both build strength and performance compared to the enemy AI controlled aircraft?
  18. Wingman commands?

My apologies - I am actually flying FEG. I keep calling it FE1 because of the forum title. Thank you Grinseed - just what I was looking for. I really could not find it in the controls section or manual. Maybe its my memory but I was sure my wingies used to engage of their own free will? Finally got my flight of spads into a great position above a gaggle of albitri, hit TAB, ordered them to attack and watched them peel off and into combat. They actually even managed to bag a couple. Quack74 - I'm still on XP so not sure I will see the benefits of FE2, especially as it is now confirmed there will not be any further expansions. Still think there is something rum about my A/C FM verses the AI tho. During that fight I was actually being out climbed by an albatros at one point, when a wingie came happily climbing up past both of us!!! Plus it takes only a few hits on my A/C to lose an aileron, I have to hose an enemy AC in lead before the same happens. Most rum indeed. Thanks again guys, Devere.
  19. Might want to consider joining in the fun, as there have been 2 new aircraft releases today: The Sopwith Pup and the Sopwith Triplane. Not only that however, to mark the release of these planes, and the 1.015 patch, 777 have put all the aircraft on sale until october the 8th - and yes that includes the new planes. Regular planes are currently at $2.99 and the 2 new crates are $3.99 As to the patch, sadly its not the biggie people were hoping for, its more of a bug squasher and framework improvements, so no FM or DM changes have been addressed, nor is the new dynamic career here yet. However the 2 new planes are pretty awesome additions, the tripe feels like a more stable camel, and the Pup, oh the Pup ! Finally the entente have a plane that is stunningly good fun to fly and fight in without it smashing to pieces or spinning madly out of control in tight turns. The gyro effects have been pretty well modelled but only having the one gun means you need to rely on being an accurate shot. That means the chrimbo update will (finally) be the dynamic career so it is now a very good time to buy the sim, and fill your hangar for a very low cost. And, as an incredible gesture from 777, those who have been onboard since the release of RoF, actually got the Pup for free
  20. Anyone still on the fence about RoF

Actually, yes, a visit to the store page and logging in would also let you know. Whilst of course it is your call as to reminding 777 about your own contribution to RoF, I really would recommend you PM jason. I'm certainly not speaking on anyone's behalf, just with that level of contribution it never hurts to ask... I think the main part of the reasoning that drove the free plane offer, was that the last sale (RoF:ICE launch), meant many long time supporters who had already purchased all the planes on release date got very little reward. This is just 777's way of rewarding those who gained no benefit from being dedicated supporters. Most companies would have felt offering the 2 planes at reduced price was 'reward' enough in itself. Actually judging from the posts on the official forum, many would have been happy with that deal. I would have been, seeing as I went to the store, fully expecting to buy both planes at regular price. I personally fall into the constructive criticism category, rather than devouted fan. There is still work to be done before RoF can remove OFF as the most immersive WW1 combat sim, however RoF is more dominant in delivering the need for a quick mad furball fix with great potential for the future. This current promotion just makes it an ideal time to get in on that potential for those who want to keep a tighter grip on their budget. That will leave more cash available for P4 when it arrives. Room on my hard drive for them all.
  21. Anyone still on the fence about RoF

Gr.Viper, I've just checked back at the RoF flight official forums. Jason has explained in full the qualifiers for the free Pup - It seems I miss read the original info (which in my defense was only a short quoted paragraph saying long time owners). I thought it meant owners of the sim To qualify you needed to have not only have bought all previous aircraft before July the 2nd, but you also needed to have been a long time owner. Also extra credit was given to owners who have been either promoting, donating content (mission builders/skinners etc) or have at least constructively criticized the sim with an eye to helping improve it, without blatantly just saying it sucks. Apologies to both you, and anyone else whose hopes I got up of a free plane if they don't meet those requirements. . Though at least with the current sale, they are still both welcome additions and hopefully the reduced buy price will at least soften the blow for those wanting both planes. I too share your frustration with the lack of dynamic campaign, I thought with all the press releases and blurb that it was going to be in this patch, with two seaters/bombers in the next one. Till then we are stuck with the same AI flaws, and still rather stilted campaign options. However the quality of content is certainly improving, and it is nice to see a rather broad mix of A/C now. Edit - if you do qualify just log in online once, then check your hangar, if you have met the requirements there will be a sopwith pups owners badge on the screen that was not there before.
  22. With a mighty choice of 3 WW1 flight sims, honestly don't see the point in holding out from getting it. RoF brings strengths that the others lack, and they in turn have strengths RoF lacks. Its definitely has got a whole lot better of late, despite some current FM issues, and the whole Noop family are an utter bad joke. If your still sitting on the fence I would wait until patch 1.015 due in october, as that is going to be bringing two seaters and a full dynamic campaign. Just don't buy any noops. The online requirement is only needed if you want the current career mode, or multiplayer. You can still play the campaigns, QMB and player missions when offline. Once you feel how amazing the rudder authority is in this game, you will start to question most other flight sims tbh. Its incredible, and a QMB skirmish with about 20 planes in the air is pretty wild. Really its biggest weakness that is holding it back in 1.014 is the AI - I will be honest here - its awful. That however is one of the big developments planned for 1.015 so after that come the FM issues and then the game, in my opinion will become pretty much the sim of choice. Not I will give up on FE, but it will take second place., with OFFP3 falling into third. At least for me, and I feel many may follow suit.
  23. Hey Rabu, I know the angle your coming from here. I too was surprised to find just how amazingly pleasant the EIII is. In fact it pretty much feels set and forget same as pretty much all the current crop of FM for the central aircraft. It is a little more involved as you can get it to spin out but its never threatening, and you never feel in real danger. That said it does require more thought regards energy management than most central planes, but I still think two pilots of equal skill, one in a DH2 the other in the EIII, the EIII will winout more times than not, as the pilot is more free to focus on combat. You cannot say the same of the DH2. Its only real vice is the slow roll, but even that can be alleviated to a degree with some rudder input. As to the noops, I have started several threads already on themain forum, but pretty much silence. No reason for their super weak frames whatsover despite no historical account ever reporting such a problem. Yet the weakly built EIII cannot even be broken in a dive, it actually levels itself out, and no amount of force on the stick will stop the EIII from leveling itself back out. Actually several central A/C do this bizarre act of psychics defiance. Don't get me wrong, I do like the EIII but probably not for the reasons I should. However why it was ever replaced in service is a mystery based on the current EIII.
  24. For the Bikers...

The ZXR750 L4 - hoping to pick one up myself this year - kwacker finally sorted the linkages then stopped making them for the Zx7r. I would suggest staying with the kwacker - looking at how mythical the aprillia's are I'm gonna guess that spares and running costs for them are going to be a bit astronomical, where as ZX9R spares is simply a breakers call away. Depends as to if you want a bit of latino flair or easy spares.
  25. Is there any way to unlock the camera angles using TIR in FEG? not being able to see directly behind and only about 45 degrees above the wing means I lose sight of EA pretty quickly and also end up being shot by planes I can never see. I feel like I have better rear vision in il2 even though there I'm sitting in an enclosed cockpit! I have bound the rear view to my hat switch, but its still such a limited view its useless in a fast turning dogfight. Also having some sound issues relating to other aircraft firing their guns. If any aircraft within about mile fires their weapons, it sounds like they are sat in the plane with me. I often find myself breaking hard thinking there is an EA firing on my six only to find they are quite distant and firing at another allied craft. I have tried some of the sound mods from this site and whilst they sound a lot better it still makes no difference regarding the relative firing volume. Final issue - according to the manual, instant action should pick me a random engagement in a random aircraft. All I get is the spad, summer time about 12pm. Every single time. It has never changed once - is there some setting I need to change somewhere? Being still on XP and DX9, would I see any benefits in buying FE2? Thanks in advance for any help rendered. D.
