  1. I think the top left is the Airspeed Indicator and the right hand one is the Altimeter with the thousands of feet indicated by the number in the middle. It should be possible to get the attitude indicator work in pitch too, something like the entry below should do it.   2. Southern, thanks for the link that explains it perfectly, I was confusing absolute and relative pressures. Capun, thanks for that, I actually had an older copy from a few years back, the latest one filled in a lot of holes.

  4. I'm just working on a DATA.ini for a Fairey Swordfish and I'm trying to figure out some of the variables in the there. MomentOfInertia - what does this represent the engine, the prop or the whole system. And er.. what units is it in? MinManifoldPressure - Again what units, and am I right in thinking for a normally aspirated engine this should be a negative number? MaxManifoldPressure - Can this be positive in a normally aspirated engine or only turbocharged ones? Finally is there a list anywhere of all the piston engine and prop variables anywhere? I don't as yet have First Eagles so I can't look through the aircraft ini files there, but if anyone knows which DLL they hide in I can have a poke through and strip them all out.

  6. Looking good, be interesting to see what you can come up with for the cockpit, all I can manage is conventional dials none of this modern stuff!
  7. The Lynx, sounds like a swarm of wasps out to kill and still one of the best looking helicopters around. And having seen how under equipped the Mk 2 that was in service in the Falklands was I am in awe of the crews for operating it down there, not to mention getting a kill with an untried weapon system.

  9. Malta? I'm guessing the UK doesn't count because the Channel Islands were occupied and err Portugal?
  10. With the Third Wire series a bit of tinkering with the HUDDATA.INI file in the Flight folder lets you change the font size, and the font of the in game text. You'll need to get the extractor utility to get the INI file out of one of the CAT files in the Flight folder, but there's probably a tutorial around here somewhere. It's actually much easier than I just made it sound!

As are we all, I've spent enough time in real simulators swearing at myself under my breath to know that no matter how realistic the programmers make it a PC programme isn't the real thing and nor is a full on six degrees of motion simulator. A lot of the things you talk about making a game realistic such as engine management with cowling flaps, rpm etc. are the sort of things a front line pilot would attend to automatically without thinking because of the amount of training he'll have done. As I don't have enough spare time to simulate having a second career I'll choose to take the easy option on that, the challenge I want is taking on another aircraft or a ground target, not doing the ground school for an aircraft. I agree that sims that presents you with a challenge are more rewarding, however I think we disagree on where the challenge should be. I think it should be in manouvering the aircraft to get a kill (with the weapons operating in a realistic manner) with it performing as close as dammit to real life. I don't think the challenge should be in memorising the 140+ switches and checks you have to make to get the engine started, otherwise you may as well buy MSFS and one of the add on airliners. As for should I be subsidised? As it's far more likley the people like me buying the game who make it financially viable, the question is should you be subsidised?
  12. Which is handy as I doubt anyone posting on this board has anything approaching the skill of Chuck Yeager, John Farly or Eric 'Winkle' Brown, hell I know I don't. If I've paid my £30 for a sim and I decide I want to hoon around with no regard for the rules of the air or the proper management of the engine then I want to be able to. It takes around three to four years to train a Sea Harrier pilot, how egotistical do you have to be to think you can pick it up after a couple of years playing flight sims as a hobby? I know I'm not that good, and that's why I use some of the 'arcade' features because then I can at least pretend, because it's a damn sight more fun than spending several weeks worth of spare time just trying to take off. And yes I'm aware the challenge of learning how to do it the 'right' way can be rewarding but it would involve sacrificing my social life to play a computer game and there's a word for people like that.
