  1. RB3D or OFF3

    As far as my machine goes, no it will probably not handle it at 1.8Ghz, 1.2g ram and 256mb nvidia card. i will still try it and when money is available, I had already planned on updating to a super gaming system once i figure out the new terms for the chipsets and mobo's. something around 2.6 to 3.0 or so and 3g ram on an xp machine i hope. It was more for RoF, as well as running my other sims like Il2 and WOx series to thier full potential but Id rather have xp than vista. Not sure when i can upgrade my laptop to handle it for roadtrips. hi rabu, nice to see you working on bringing back the good ole days. If skinning is even easier ( I use paint shop pro 5) then thats a plus as i just couldnt get the hang of the right palletes to show up in FCJ. Im not worried about it now, but i can at least swap parts on my plane to make it unique like in Rb1, but more colorful. Im not sure how OFF3/cfs3 does the skins, im sure its all on one bitmap? I too have read all that i can, im just trying to get a feel for if its worth dumping RB3d. Basically, Im looking at if OFF3 has all that RB has (minus aces paint) and more. Sounds like QC and maybe mission builder is much better, campaign sounds the same but better, graphics and FM/DM better, planes are the same with a few additionals like 2 seaters (Im a scout pilot, but its always fun to experiment) etc ?     Bucky, Not sure i may have better flying skills/tactics.. who knows? I use MS sidewinder non forcefeedback. Anyway, I fly everything on hard except AI is normal to try to balance the wingmen. Im using peters latest Dr1 FM nothing changed. To me, it feels sensitive to rudder as it should be without being too squirrely for AI. Ill try put ai on hard to see if there is a difference in my flying the 110/130/150 vs Dr1 and vice versa. a note, perhaps rudder throw more to the right vs left would give it that 'camel' feel? not sure... Personal taste can factor in too, but sometimes that is part of the problem when it comes to accuracy. So far, thats all we go on with these crates until the proper aero engineers, coding, historians and actual flight comparisions can be performed. Ive said it pretty much since 1997/98 on this subject....
  3. Unfortunately, this goes with the territory of flight sims and why major companies WILL NOT entertain dealing with the community as the 'historian' or 'airplane nut' comes out. Not when they can come up with their own rules for their FPS or strategy game and not deal with realism. Im sure most of us that have been around this know what happens/has happened. I managed to take a flight with the Syrian Mig as I mentioned earlier in my first flight with it in WOI. My flight of 4 encountered first 2 Baz, and 2 Migs went down in fiery explosions (as seen from my mirrors!). I was popping flares and chaff and went vertical to catch one. managed to let loose a couple irm's and got him. I think my wingie got the other before he bit it. Not sure now, but when it was over, i had 2 missile kills and finally hit the wing of another Baz. Got 4 for loss of 3 Migs. Not too bad for not remembering keys for radar, new to birds HUD, etc. Kudos again!
  4. Well, I used the community weapons pack on a clean Weapons folder, and the F15E and 16C have the Aim120 pre loaded. But i cannot get the Aim7 series to show up on F15E. the 7M shows 0 on the left side for some reason. with the community WP, the F15E has the F22 tank available... cool. anyone know why the F15E wont show a sparrow? got it here at combatace... my last post in this thread... started with the Migs...

    Well, I modified the 110 camel and left the other 2 alone. in 1v2 against Dr1, I dont see much difference in turn rate, both left or right against them. the 110hp tends to stall easier than the other 2, could be just the hp difference. in 130 and 150hp, i was equal in turns both left and right, but no stall sounds as much. Now, I can feel a difference in the Dr1 Fm vs the camel, it does seem to react quicker than the camel, esp in rudder....
  6. TMF weapons pack fixes the Migs, but not why the F15E now does not have missiles loaded already. I know why the F22 tank isnt, no biggie, but it should at least have the sparrows and aims loaded along with the sidewinders...
  7. Ok, I must ask. What weapons pack works the best with these? When i installed them (TMF MiG29) WOE, i show no loadouts. WOI is fine with the TMF weapons pack. I have loaded i believe the 2006 pack with the 2008 weaponeditor. As a goof, i tried the TMF weapons pack for spf1 and WOE and the Migs work fine, but now F15E only shows sidewinders loaded, but i can see the others on the left and can load them. I think its the loadout ini, but im not sure. Any quick help? Ive fixed the F15E before, but now ive forgotten... F15A is fine... I tried the WOI Syrian Mig29, very nice btw!!!!! The HUD has very thick characters and reticles, very different! Nice cockpit and the FM is now not twitchy. If the Mig29G could have that FM upgrade, then it would be complete as well. Kudos!

    Its not so much poor response, but not enough rudder area to compensate for the gyro precession and the short coupleness of the camel while in a right turn. Full rudder was required in only a 30deg bank as described by King in Flight Journal.

    What about the Dr1? It was much more of a rudder airplane since no fixed vertical fin. I reread the Fokker Dr1 by Leaman last nite on its flying characteristics. how does the AI handle the camel? thats the real challenge...
  11. FMs for Nov 2008 version

    Since dive speeds for each aircraft (VNE) are not modeled, actual combat tactics or restrictions are not possible Im finding out. when a spad 13 has a dr1 on his tail, he should be able to dive away and leave the Dr1 behind. Not so here, Ive had a Dr1 stuck to my tail and couldnt shake him until too late. the drag on the 3 wings would have kept the Dr1 up high, not sitting on my tail at at 160+mph or whatever i was doing. But all in all, this is still a good dogfight simulator, and I enjoy it more as i mess with it..

    Yes, unfortunately the Spad 7, 150 and 180hp versions are not flyable stock. Look at peters fm campaign file in the downloads section as well as aircraft and skins section. I forgot already which one i used from the last 2 to make mine flyable. quite easy actually. someone whos dealt with the weapons should be able to answer, but i believe its a matter of weapons folder with correct files there. the rockets were never that exciting in RB3D, so i havent tried them yet in FE.

    Peter, I noticed that there is only 1 spad 13 data file in your fms campaign for sept 08. the engine type shows 235hp Hispano but goes in the 220 folder? what about the 200 and 235 data files? did i miss something? or is it used for all 3 types?
  14. I changed my altitudes abit. very high is 5000m, 4000 for high, medium 3000 and i think low is 1000 or so. Balloon busting must use the medium as i was at 9800ft plus or minus and very far above the height of the balloon, which is about 3-4k ft. I was in spad 13 just trying it out when i encountered albatros scouts then fokker dr1 at my hieght or so, give or take. one must take them out or lose altitude. i used the map to find the waypoint to it, as i had set the cloud layer to 3rd setting from stormy or whatever it is. fwiw,

Se5a's would generally fly up to 17k feet with camels around 10k ft with coverage from the Se5A's. the altitudes in game are very low. i have had it start at 6k ft before, and am generally above the enemy flight in single missions. good practice for boom n zoom tactics if you can get those mission parameters. not sure what it does to the enemy flight if altitudes are changed. i might mess with it tonight...
  16. Not sure what problems you are having with the most manouverable kites in FE? I have no problems with them, they just seem to easy to fly and get kills in (hard FM). trying to fly an alb or spad against them is another story. that takes alot of planes and alot of manouvering to keep away from these dogfighters. If anything, they should be the hardest planes to fly. the Dr1 should be all rudder, constant climb. the camel should require IIRC, constant left rudder to compensate for gyro precession and stall if not flown properly. The FM will always be debated, but the real test is how the AI can handle it and how the crate compares to its rival.

  18. Orsin, Ive been tinkering with both the 'stock' Mig29a and your adjusted FM in single missions. I find flying the newer Mig29 FM over old it has a faster roll rate than before, and does not have the speed bleed in turns that most other jets have. I noticed i was able to climb while turning with a F16a no problems with i believe about 400 or more knots airspeed till the viper splatted into the ground. Already had hit another viper. This is WOE with Oct 08 patch. Flying the F15 in 2v2 engagement, once i got past BVR and into close ACM with both Migs, i noticed alot of almost flat turning and cobra like manouvers after we went round and round a few times. AI skill at excellent says the QMB. This is after my excellent ranked wingman is shot down either by cannon or missile. The plus is, no yawing while at lower speeds like with original FM. I guess my comment is, its better, but questionable on the speed bleed and the way the AI still tended to cobra the plane. Comments?
  19. This is a good post. It should be a sticky with more indepth if possible by the 'old hands' with this series. Some of you old hands need to remember, not all of us are experts on jet combat. Im new to jet combat, as Im more of the visual guns. My books are 10k miles away, so i cant read up on some of the stuff i have. Im with one of the other posters, when i tried reading the manual, and applying it (WoV), i couldnt get the radar to help me as by the time i got blips, it was just better to go to boresight. with my modern fighters added to SF1, F-15/16 to MiG29, BVR is much more possible. So, any hints or tips would be appreciated and should be stickied so we 'newbs' dont keep asking. And yes, ive read the manual.

    Peter, Without rehashing the old days of RB3D testing, what do you use as a benchmark in data to tweak the FMs for these crates? Feel, books, etc? How are they tested? climb rate, turn rate, comparsion to contemporary of the other side? IE, spad vs D7, Dr1 vs camel, etc? Just curious... Ronbo

    'mild form of blackmail' is still a bit harsh, IMHO. If SIMHQ didnt have a long standing forum for this series (SFP1, WOV, etc) then I think this would be the premier forums for that. Downloads and info galore in one spot. For me, i already have too many forums to look at as it is Its a very valuable site for sure. Well, i should be at 5 posts now. I dont usually post unless i have a question or giving info.... main reason i havent posted since i joined last year. Might be the same for most...
