Is the rendition of Scenery & Terrain in FE2 essentially the same as in FE1? If so, would Jan Tuma's new terrain tiles work in FE2?
-
Thanx, ezlead. I have the parts for a 3way SLI machine coming in and was thinking about getting FE2. What OS are you running? I was thinking I'd install Windows 7 64bit. I have FE Gold running on XP 32bit and Tuma's terrain does wonders for FE. What branch you serve in? I spent 20 in the AF.

Improving Rise of Flight Performance - TURN OFF Physx!
waco1937 replied to The_Black_Knight's topic in General Discussions
From my reading of Nvidia FAQs and forums PhysX is supported with the 8 series and up (and now with the hack included) but is still buggy. From the Windows Control Panel though, the PhysX Control Panel will not open even tho the icon is there. You can find the .exe file in System 32 folder in Windows and create a shortcut to open it. I suspect that you won't see any PhsyX effects unless you're running a game that's coded for it. Nvidia's FAQs aren't clear on this. I've been playing around with PhysX for nearly a week with two machines that are SLI and qualified for PhysX and have become disgusted with it. I think Nvidia has a way to go yet. -
What's the procedure for changing the screen shot that displays while a chosen single mission is loading? Since they're aircraft screenies, I thought a simple change of the screen shot would do it. That didn't happen. I would appreciate a push in the right direction.
-
Okay, I made a couple of screen shots and saved them in the DEG folder as bitmaps. I named them in the manner I found in the DH2 config file and entered them into the DEG config file using notepad. The plane still loads default load and hanger pix, so I missed entering the path cuz the default path is still used. How & where do I edit a new path? I've searched files and folders & cannot find anything. Or am I completely off base here?
-
Thanx, Wrench, I'm referring First Eagles Gold Pack or FE1. I'm using an LCD 16X10, which stretches the some of the loading screens out of proportion. I'm running XP SP3 yet and will not jump to Windows 7 until I build a new computer, which could be a while yet. I can run with graphics pushed to the limit and don't see the need, so won't get FE2 for a while.

Funny thing happened on the way to the forum
waco1937 posted a topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
To explain my topic title I have 2 FEG installs on my computer. One on C drive, which is my test bed for addons, and another on D drive, which is my keeper. Anyway, I had downloaded and tried out Peter01's Jun 09 FM files and weapons pack on the C drive FE. I liked them and installed them on the D drive rendition. When I started the D drive FE up I chose a Single Mission with the Fokker E1. No sooner had it loaded and the airfield appeared (I enjoy starting from the runway), the E1 blew up and parts rained down upon the field. I tried a few other planes and this didn't happen. Just the E1. Boom every time. I even took the loadout config and ini files from the plane folder and the plane still exploded. As an experiment, I replaced the E1 folder in D drive with a copy from the C drive and "wallah" all is fixed. No explosion, I can take off, fly around and drop bombs. This all made for a humorous evening. I'm still chuckling over it. Wish I had a good screen shot of the explosion. -
First Eagles seasonal Tiles by Jan Tuma

I built a new machine a short while back with Quad core and a couple of 275gtx video cards in SLI and the detail is utterly amazing on high settings. I've only seen artifacts a couple of times briefly. Tuma's work makes FE photo realistic. Now if I was only a better pilot and could stay alive longer.......
-
I installed FE Gold with Jan Tuma's great new scenery on two of my computers with XP. The first is AMD X2 6000 3GHz CPU with 2 SLI 9500 video cards w/512MB memory. The second is AMD Phenom2 X4 3.0GHz with 2 SLI 275GTX video cards w/786(?) memory. Each machine has 4GB of RAM. Does it make sense that the X2 machine loads FE considerably faster than the X4 machine?

I've been thru the manual a couple of times and flown instant action quite a few times and have been stuck flying the Spad the whole time. What has to happen to end up flying a different plane?
-
Okay, figured it out. Flying an SE5 in Instant Action now. Thanx for your help, guys. I'm just going to save a changed options file for each plane I want to fly.
-
Correction: Never mind Bandy found the File. Have to figure out now how to tweak it for another plane.
-
Thanx Bandy, I tried a little experiment and it went south on me. I'm at the bottom of the learning curve with FE's files and folders scheme. Enjoy the sim immensely. A very good change of pace from OFF. I was just trying to learn RB when OFF came out and I turned to it. Now I have two WW1 sims to fly. I'm a hardware sort of guy rather than software, hence I stumble and trip often. What's the specific name of the instant action I should tinker with?

I use a couple of old Saitek ST290 Pro joysticks. They work just fine with the planes that came with the FE Gold Pack down load. I've been working my way through some of the addon planes and came across a some joystick problems. For instance! Some of the rudders don't work. In fact on one plane only one aileron works for roll, but when I twist the stick the other aileron works. Is there a cutoff date where some planes only work before a some update? Or is there a substitute FM to correct this? Or am I out of luck?
-
Here's what I was referring to at the top of this thread. The planes has been flying straight and level for a while but note the ailerons, rudder, & horizontal stabilizer. The plane is the DFWC1 by Bortdafarm. Weirdn huh?

I'm used to mucking around in M$ sim files and folders but not these, so I have another question. Where in FE are aircraft engine sounds kept. Main Sound folder? Individual aircraft folder? Or where? Or is there one engine sound for all aircraft engines?
-
Well, I've learned to edit with Notepad in M$ flight sims. Thanx again & again, FC. You're no doubt wishing I'd run out of questions.
-
Thanx again, FC. So .ini files are similiar to config files.
-
I bought, downloaded and installed First Eagles Gold combo pack. I flew once and then downloaded and tried to install the Nov 08 update. The install aborted. Was that the right order or was I wrong?
-
Is there a way to tell whether an aircraft addon is flyable with a virtual cockpit. Maybe a file in the aircraft folder? Some say but others don't unless it's indicated to be strictly AI.
-
Hey rscsjsuso5, I think I'd go with Snoopy and his dog house. Maybe draft Charlie Brown as crew chief. Or maybe a heliocopter. Dodge sideways and hover. That oughta spook 'em. Shades of Jules Verne. Thanx FC. Only file work, etc, I've done was in M$ flight sims.
-
Thanx guys, you're absolutely right. I tried a new install and when I fired up the update, it started, stopped almost immediately and then said my installation was up to date. When I read on Third Wire's forum about installation sequence, TK had advised to install FE, then Xpansion pack, followed by the update. I never found anything about the update and the Gold pack. Too bad the release month of the Gold pack wasn't listed in the buy Store in Third Wire. Maybe that would've ended any confusion. But all's well that ends well. Date in the bottom RH corner is Nov 2008. Yup, Bwf, it's now on to mods. I was intrigued by the thread and pix of Jan Tuma's landscape mods. More flyable aircraft is good, too. Do I have to run down mods for a VC after installing FMs? Have to learn all the keyboard commands, too.
-
Found this in the patch Readme. If you have purchased Expansion Pack 1, you should install the Expansion Pack first before applying this Update. I presumed that this same instruction would apply to the Gold combo pack Think I'll do a reinstall and see what happens.
-
FC, That's what I tried to find out in the readme's but couldn't find anything definitive. Could've missed something, though. A reinstall is always an option.
