  1. OT What Job do you do?

Ive been a Police Officer for the last 24 years in south east London Woolwich, Catford, Peckham, Croydon and now Lambeth. I used to drive the big old pursuit cars such as rover SD1's 827's and BMW's but now I drive a computer aided despatch terminal " calling all cars, calling all cars, a type 06 in progress 7b south st ec1
  2. How do your pilots die?

only lost 1 so far to enemy aircraft, and boy he was one hot hun, all over my tail like flies on a rib roast never yet been hit by Archie but by far the majority of deaths and crashes have been due to lack of altitude and my fixation with a target "discipline double oh seven, discipline"
  3. Patching Combat Flight Sim

    Ooooo Fnaar fnaar!
  4. International shipping times?

Only took 6 days to find me in sunny Bucks so keep calm and spend the wait doing something usefull like dubbin up your flying boots so they dont chaff
  5. Nearest threat

  6. Nearest threat

Pray tell me more, I am all ears efited to add...ive just googled it, will give it a go tonight when I get home. thanks for the hint
  7. Nearest threat

Ditto. So being unable to track the culprit visually as you would in RL the target indicator acts as your virtual eyes. Maybe one day Father Christmas will bring a Trackir to the salty houseboat but till then its make the best use of what you got. The danger with the TI is, you can end up just concentrating on the one target and miss others that may present themselves as a better victim
  8. RIP Ron Baker

My OFF experience so far has been played with the intention of using one pilot at a time in a career/campaign and remaining with the same Squadron throughout the war. Sgt Ron Baker joined 3 Sqd RFC on 1 Jan 1915 flying a Bristol Scout. He was in the air from day 1 flying 2 missions each day which were generally troop spotting trips over the front in the Ypres area. Despite his keenness to "have a go at the hun" he didnt come across any enemy aircraft in his 15 days with the Squadron. Sadly, after logging almost 30 hrs flying time in his trusty Scout and just following him being awarded his commission, he was killed when returning to his airfield from his last war patrol. Although the weather had been fine and clear all day on 15th January strong winds were gusting across the fields. Observers watching 2nd Lt Baker come into land state they saw his kite crabbing sideways as it dropped down towards the field and couldnt understand why he didnt change his approach into the gusting wind, maybe he was having engine problems, as his wheels touched the ground it appeared that he tried to bring the tail round to run straight and as he did so, his left wing was suddenly hit by a strong gust which flipped it up, burying the right wing into the ground and casuing the nose of the Scout to vere sharply up and right and then back into the ground flipping the plane onto its back. When ground staff reached Lt bakers plane he was already dead His replacement Sgt Andrew Petrie, a Scot from Stirling has just arrived. Its now 19 March 1915
  9. RIP Ron Baker

Theres no rush, these young whipper snappers need to learn some self discipline before they go off chasing the first black speck they see on the horizon. Btw does anyone else find it really frustrating when you see that little speck in the distance, then spend ages trying to gain some height and catch up with it and it never gets any closer, then you realise its a bit of dirt on your screen
  10. RIP Ron Baker

He will be starting from 19 march 1915 Its no problem not meeting the enemy. Archie is letting the pilots know that the enemy are there. I fly in real time with no warp in a kind of attempt at total immersion. The idea is that if one pilot dies then his replacement comes along and we continue with the Sqd from there. gradually time and the war progresses
  11. RIP Ron Baker

He will certainly be paying more attention to wind direction when he comes into land and not get all flustered coz the baby just woke up and wanted feeding
  12. The Hard Stuff

Rum for me, Bacardi do a nice spice version and I managed once to get a bottle of Navy Rum from a Royal Navy display stand during a festival at Chatham Dockyard. Now that was warming as it went down....didnt seem to last very long though, I think there was a problem with evaporation
  13. SH3 for me cant get my head into SH4 at the moment, its just not got the same immersion for me but its a very popular sim. Nothing else really floats my boat unless I include the Desert Storm series on PS2, but thats only used if i feel the need to blast away
  14. The Last Change for P3....

If it aint broke, then dont fix it. OFF for me is a simulation. If my pilot last only 8 hrs flying time then thats the way it is. He may die due to inferior equipment, lack of training or mearly from a moments lack of concentration because ive been enjoying the view rather than keeping my eyes peeled. Thats war and OFF is as close as it gets.
  15. FE2B

    excellent vids
  16. And german flak during WW2 was a weapon to fear. They almost had it down to perfection
  17. its just a Gimp mask I would actually go with your first guess, heating to combat frost at high altitude, wireless headphones where already common in those days and if i remember rightly, didnt they use morse code senders? they didnt really need the return feed into their head phones Im just guessing also
  18. It does make me wonder why some folk think Archie was an ineffective weapon. Read up on any true account of baloon busting and the concentration of weapons was scary. Even if it didnt come close, it was an effective nerve crunching weapon against pilots sitting in a wooden seat surrounded by cloth
  19. I think its a question of what do you want from OFF? Do you want an Arcade style "shoot em up" game or an accuratly historic recreation flight simulator. You can have both with the settings available in OFF. BTW do some reading non fiction reading of the pilots and people from this era and you may, just may get some idea of how cheap life was in the 1914-18 Great War
  20. open letter to OBD

My version was only installed yesterday and patched straight away to superpatch and mini patch so Ive never played it anyother way. It is without doubt the best WW1 flight simulator I have ever had the pleasure to use. A very well done to all concerned and keep up the good work
  21. Hi folks Wonder if anyone out there has a solution. I get all the way through setting up the graphics as per instructions, then try to set the sliders and they all move as one? I am unable to move each slider individualy, so at the moment they are all sitting at 4 Any one had the same problem or know if ive missed something very simple? cheers folks ps apart from that the sim runs perfectly as is as more than my expectation
  22. New install problem

Many thanks for that. Works as described
  23. Just ordered

Many thanks for that, You have described exactly what i hoped, sticking with 1 sqdn till the duration and playing each pilot 'DID' All I need to do now is decide on a 2 seater or scout sqdn I think a 12 hr night shift has made me tired, Ive just made a fatal error and installed OFF, then unzipped the super patch, then unzipped the mini patch without installing the superpatch TUT!!! Ive now uninstalled the whole lot and trying again.....or maybe i should get some sleep first Naaaaaa edited for Speeling due to fat fingers
  24. Just ordered

Thanks for the welcome, like Fawlty im here for the campaign. Does the model allow you to choose a Sqdn and see it through to the armistice? My intention is to stick with 1 and if my current pilot bites the dust his replacement will be fresh from flying school and so continue the war from that point so it will be DID. Does the Campaign allow you to enter from specific dates? Cheers
  25. Lack of Moral Fibre !

It makes you wonder how a flight of swordfish from Ark Royal could mistake HMS Sheffield during the hunt for the Bismarck but they did.
