personally the main put-off for me with OFF is that its based on the cfs3 engine. okay so they've done just about everything they can to make it barely cfs3, but the core is still there with its daft ai , min speed to warp and ground-attack orientated slant. i shudder when i remember totally useless wingman that fly around in circles sightseeing whilst you alone take-on the entire enemy airforce! i still fly MAW which was a very well- done Med/Africa/Malta based game based on the cfs3 engine - and despite fantastic scenery, planes and other eye candy, cfs3 still unfortunately shines through. for me FE is a truer WW1 game.

thanks very much - i'll start with those!

Not known to be present in Solomons, New Guinea, Rabaul, Marianas or the smaller islands and attolls that were IJN territory. it comes with skins for 5 differant Regiments too! plus differant paint schemes. wow! Thanks Geo. and thanks Wrench and Edward for the scenery too! -

Wilches, good idea to pop the new cockpit into the ki-84 - if i remember correctly that has a ki-43-1 cockpit, so will look a LOT better with the Ki--4 pit in there. thanks for the tips on how to do it, because i had no idea. Wrench, i envy you having the Raiden so close, but we do have some compensation here - the ki-100-1b and Ki-46-111 at Cosford just down the road. Believe they are one of a kind too. you have far more jap aircraft cross the pond than we do, i know that for a fact. judging by this Ki-44 the J2M should really be something special. -
My wish list - if you can call it a list...

Spitfire X1V; its a real beast - rolls-royce griffon engine, 5 blade prop and was the best piston engine fighter in the world when it was operational in mid 1944. it was faster than the p-51d and could outclimb it too, of course it didn't have the long range of that fine fighter. but that became less important as nw europe was slowly liberated. the triple aaa site which is where the modders for il-2 hang out have released a couple of variants of this bird for il-2, and believe me that plane rules the roost. they say oleg maddox refused to put the aircraft into his game cos nobody else would stand much chance in online dogfights!! like the tempest at the time, most were held back for anti-diver patrols (against hitlers secret weapons). however once released for ops over france, belgium, holland and germany the fighter soon made its mark, achieving the first allied me-262 jet kill. around a 1000 were built, although the mk.1x continued in action to wars end. i'd really love to see the fighter in this game. -
Tunisia terrain upgrade WIP

all we need now is a fylable G3M "Nell" and its a bomb run over Clark Field! most of the other planes for both sides in the 41-42 campaign are pretty much already available right? 44-45 is good too, except there is no Ki-44 or J2M, least i have'nt found them, strictly speaking the IJN N1K2 "George" should be the earlier N1K1 model but who's splitting hairs............ what about kamikazes in the second campaign - is that possible with this engine? -

Help for a new prophead
jet_spud replied to ShrikeHawk's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Prop Heads Forum
i've been doing multi-installs for the last several days - the first a pacific one with WOV but this caused problems with WW2 planes (lock-ups), so on the advice of wrench i redid them with WOE; i used v.06 and followed all instructions to the letter, i recall it said for one pacific scenery package that you must install the add-on ships, vehicles, aa mg's etc from a-team, so i sourced everything possible from there first, and popped them in. i chose not to use SFG because most add-ons now seem to be done with WOE in mind. next i read that midway scenery is also important for more objects, so this went in next - checking each time to see if all ok, then the philippines scenery was next and all went according to plan. i've now got all the pacific theatre aircraft from a-team working fine, plus most of the updates and new planes here. the scenery is awesome - no probs so far. i've also done nw europe 1943-45 on another install and BoB, burma and africa are next up! its a fantastic resource here and at a-team. you must be careful to update the CAT file in the scenery.ini each time - because the CAT file decides which game the scenery is compatible with; desert-SFG, Vietnam Sea-WOV and GermanyCE-WOE. apparently WOI is a big no-no full stop! also make sure you don't patch up your ww2 game beyond 06 (you can update your WOE later). hope that helps from a fellow newbie! -
Wide cockpit view in WOE?
jet_spud posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
what happened to the wide cockpit view in WOE that is present in SFG, FE, WOV and WOI? i really liked that view because it felt right, you could see most of what was going on in a wide arc ahead. -
Wide cockpit view in WOE?
jet_spud replied to jet_spud's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
found out the reason; the wide cockpit feature must have been included in a patch after v.06, cause it shows up in my vanilla WOE patched up to V.08. so its only missing as a view feature in my multiple installs of WOE for my WW2 versions - can't do anything about it as most WW2 prop planes dont get on with versions patched beyond v.10.06. -
hi, new to this forum looked at the list of downloadable stock aircraft additions/variants for FE and saw "sopwith" which surprised me as i don't have any sopwith in my version, then i was surprised even more to find the number of sopwiths within as a big fat 0!! what happened here? also while i'm here, i've read elsewhere with TW games that some accept mods better if they are'nt patched all the way up to v.08 (i'm talking ww2 planes in sf1 series especially. what's best for FE with regard to adding planes, effects etc ? thanks.

Question for the multi install prop heads
jet_spud replied to Viggen's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Prop Heads Forum
wrenchie mate, i've followed your excellent tutorial you linked me too and i've succesfully got loadsa WW2 installs off WOE; ETO, BoB, MTO, Malta, Africa, PTO and CBI, plus WW1 & Korea. all of course done with a fresh install of WOE v.10.06. followed up by adding all ww2 weapons (done by some bloke called wrench i think), ww2 formation/nations.ini and ww2 fx., and ww2 plane pack by wolf. i've backed up in WOE vanilla in a zipped folder and hidden it...............now where did i put it? finally i re-installed WOE, patched it up to the latest version and installed all the NATO add-ons. yippee what a collection. will start on scenery etc another time. thanks anyway. any problems or questions i'll pm you if thats okay. -
thanks very much guys - i didn't even know there was an expansion pack to be honest! i seem to remember when i purchased the game there was going to be a whole series, but guess it did'nt happen aside for this one. my FE is v.06 i think, should i patch it up to v.08 here or will the expansion do that for me? making this series moddable was a great idea. your right about the games too, i've been stuck on the il-2 series for a number of years, but they are very serious, and sometimes can get a bit boring. you know i'd almost forgotten how much fun a combat sim can be until i got the whole sf1/fe series! now i can't stop flying or fiddling with them!

Question for the multi install prop heads
jet_spud replied to Viggen's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Prop Heads Forum
very interesting - its amazing what combo's can be dreamt up with this series if you really think about it! guess FE as a ww2 game might be worth a try, but it really does sound as if WOE patched upto v.06 is the best way to go, so its back to removing WOE v.08 with NATO fighters and then reinstalling and starting again methinks. least that way i get to keep my ww1 planes too. i've got SFG set-up now as a fictional 1946-1950's jet sim, using stock scenery plus india which i like, western allies v russia, so can fly all the early jets that don't fit in anywhere else. props are banned though LOL. man this stuff is addictive - must lose my desire to constantly fiddle with this thing and actually strap myself into the cockpit for a change! thanks for all the tips; i probably wouldn't attemp this on my own! -
Question for the multi install prop heads
jet_spud replied to Viggen's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Prop Heads Forum
can now report that you are right!! twice i've locked-up on modded WOV, both tmes with prop aircraft; sea fury and tigercat despite having all weapons etc working. dumped all prop aircraft and hope jets ok. something you said in your post interested me - can we import SF1 ww2 planes into FE? has anyone tried it? scenery is spot-on for nw europe after all, no missiles or anything like that. might be a lot less work than backdating my WOE v.08 to v.06 and building from scratch. what do you think? -
Question for the multi install prop heads
jet_spud replied to Viggen's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Prop Heads Forum
hi wrench - like your mods by the way. thanks for all the info and link to your excellent tutorial, no i hadn't found that. anyway i've saved the details to my docs. funny enough i've just installed a 2nd WOV and renamed it WO Korea! like as a practise run. so far so good but i only finished it last night! i've got all the usual suspects in like f-84, f-86, mig-15, but also i wanted to get the feel of 1950 ops so i put in yak-9, la-11, b-29, f4u, skyraider, tigercat, bearcat, sea fury, sea vixen, meteor, vampire, postwar spit & seafire etc. just wanted to get some of those postwar aircraft in that don't really fit into the other cold war scenarios. the only one i can't find is an il-10, not just really post-war but the NK used them in 1950 too. i've seen the warnings regarding certain prop planes, especially ww2 stuff going into 08 patched games - is the biggest problem with the aircraft or their loadouts, or both? WOV seemed the obvious choice cos of the s. e. asia connection, what with all the textures being perfect etc. would you believe it - i've just got WOE set up perfect with 08 patch and all NATO fighters add-ons, darn it! i'll get korea finished and then delete WOE and reinstall to follow your instructions. how about pacific/far east scenery with WOE - wont the land textures/sea be wrong? -
Question for the multi install prop heads
jet_spud replied to Viggen's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Prop Heads Forum
sorry to not get back to you earlier - i was trying to get the hang of the game structure and putting some mods on etc. yes screenies would be great! okay i've found out how to do multiple installs of SFG, WOV, WOE and WOI. i reckon pacific for WOV, africa for either WOI or SFG and nw europe/bob for WOE, what do you think? now i need to know how to go about it!! presume i have to rid the games of their modern stuff completely? is that safe to do? i notice that there is no weapons folder or weapons dat.ini in the objects folder? i'm guessing here that i'll need to create one before i start importing aircraft in? what about guns etc. any other tips before i take the dive would be much appreciated. thanks. -

computing gunsights and SF series
jet_spud posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
hi again, ww2 pilot trying to understand post war jet combat in this brilliant game. when did computing gunsights become standard? do all postwar (say post korea) jets in SF series use a computing gunsight that compensates for "leading a target" or was it in service by one side before the other? does it also come into play on ground targets? though this seems unlikely to me. am sure i flew a MiG downloaded form here the other day and i had sights squarely over a target aircaft but my rounds didn't seem to hit until i got up real close and personal, then kaboom! -

computing gunsights and SF series
jet_spud replied to jet_spud's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
cheers for the books recos. going to amazon next.... i like the idea that multiple kills can be made by the "spray and pray" method - that fits in well with my general performance in il-2 ! can equate with the probs the thunder boys had in nam, cos by heck do i do some fiddling with the blasted sights and weapons too guess thats what they call a realistic combat sim? those NV MiG's were a pretty worthy foe overall it seems, especially the 21's, and they had the advantage of a friendly face when they bailed - presuming they were'nt already toasted of course..... -
can't find anything on multiple installs of SF?
jet_spud posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
hi again, more newbie questions i'm afraid looking on the net there are so many aircraft from diferant era's for SFG1 (i've got SFG - i'm keeping WOV, WOE & WOI vanilla seperate installs), and scenery/maps that i reckon i'll be needing several installs! i've currently got all postwar jets on my base install, and already i'm getting overlap - the options.ini doesn't seem very effective at keeping them apart in SFG. i'm thinking of splitting them down a bit more anyway cos the list is getting a bit long. perhaps i'll do a desert storm or a korean theme for the base install or something. i'm thinking of doing some ww2 installs next, using maps here for BoB, africa, burma, pacific, germany etc. plus falklands in 1982 which is a must have for me - might have to start the sea harriers in the air though..... presume that's possible but not quite sure the best way to go about it? should i rename my base install and then add new ones, renaming it each time by adding a differant file extention name each time, then remove the file extension just prior to running it so that the desktop icon loads the SFG install temporarily without an extensionl? or is there a better way to do it? thanks. -

computing gunsights and SF series
jet_spud replied to jet_spud's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
thanks very much guys - its a lot clearer now. except whats a cage sight i did wonder whether USN/USAAF might have had more advanced gunsights than russian-built aircraft - like those used by the NVAF, because the US seemed to go down the path of more high-tec whilst the russians seemed to prefer faster productiion; almost like a battle of quality v quantity, although in vietnam i guess the US enjoyed the quantity too. i suppose thinking about it, that is the way russia went in ww2 as well, inasmuch as they rapidly out produced the luftwaffe but often at a cost in quality and equipment (air to air radios and gunsights being a good example) certainly in the early and middle years at least, and russian pilots were pretty expendable then. must try and find a book covering these jet conflicts detailing air to air and air to ground weapons, anyone recomend one?
