  1. Flimsy Balloons

The possibility is there if you have one tracer round following three or four normal rounds. Sort of 111211121112 (with 1 being a normal round, and 2 being a tracer) If I recall rightly, a few (or more?) of the pilots often loaded their own belts, checking rounds over, perhaps notching the lead a little...so they could easily make up their belts as to whatever sequence they liked. Maybe thats reflected in how quick a balloon goes up? I've had fast and slow results on balloons, so maybe not. :D
  2. Get on your Spitfire t-shirts!

A think a little BoBII is in order this evening (although my campaign in that is hovering around Aug 15 1940).
  3. First flight In BHAH

Well done, Sir! Brandy and cigars in the mess. Perhaps someone can find a car and the lot of us careen into Lille for whats left of the night-life.
  4. Just wondering about some of the best ways of submitting claim forms. I've submitted three on behalf of my DiD pilot, Rolf Lehman, so far from flying sorties over the weekend past (covering two days of the war, 22Aug1916 and 23Aug1916), and happily received one confirmation. Is there anyway to tell which was confirmed? The two rejected were for 'lack of corroboration'---- I have no problem with rejected claims, as it happened all the time irl for the real pilots---- and in the replays it showed that Rolf had indeed shot down the enemy machines. I'm assuming the first rejected one was from Rolfs first 'lone wolf' patrol, and with no other aircraft about, other than the Tommies, I used 'Spotter' as a witness, since there was one nearby. Not sure about the other rejected claim as Herr Schneider was present for two claims. I'm curious as to how accurate I must be spelling-wise with witness names, and how many witnesses can I cite? On the lone wolf escapade there was also a nearby army base, as well as marching troops along a road-- how would (or could I) use those as witnesses next time? Like I said, I have no trouble with rejected claims, just want to minimise my (the players) mistakes on the effect of approval/rejection. Any hints welcome! Thanks
  5. Your first combat flight sim...

Hmmm....if memory serves, first one was the tiny WWI map in the very first MS flight sim, where you could fly over the mountains and into a ghostly world of unknown, and if you stayed on a true course, a mirror landscape would emerge, sometimes populated with enemies, sometimes just ghost fields. Next combat sim would have been Microprose's F15 and then Mig Alley...damn those SAM sites. After wobbling about in the aircraft in DICEs Battlefield 1942, discovered IL2 and was mesmerized by how cool it was (and still is, imho).
  6. Just saw this thread. Very cool indeed! Brings back awsome memories of tabletop gaming (and boardgaming) with buddies. I had copies of Fight in the Skies and later Dawn Patrol (both long since lost after numerous moves/postings). Love the idea of the dowelling as altitude markers, the alligator clips and wire. Is it possible to obtain the instructions for making those bases? I still have a copy of Richtofens War and might try to adapt it- be a nice project for my son and I. Cheers!
  7. Totally agree. I, for one, haven't remotely regretted picking up this sim. Its immersive, very entertaining, so much going on just in SP campaign play that I haven't even tried MP as of yet. It plays well, its very well supported, and the community here is very friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable.
  8. Pfalz pilots

The Halb vs N11 is a fun test. If you are a Halb pilot follow Boelcke's dictum and don't give up height advantage if you have it. I had a 'stupid moment' yesterday and lost my best pilot to a N11 flight because I let them drive me down to the deck-- Rolf was killed at about 700' altitude. With the Halb its easy to gain height in a turning climb, but I find also very easy to lose height in a tight turn. Ah well, I'll have to roll up a new pilot later when I get in from teaching. Cheers all!
  9. Claim submissions

Great info- thanks much! I had only inserted the name of one of the flight pilots as the form only asks for one witness, or in the case of the lone wolf, I put 'Spotter' where maybe I should have put 'German Spotter' since most ground objects seem to have at least two parts to their designation. I would love to add a full report if that helps game mechanic-wise especially since it fills the logbook in nicely too and looks like an interesting read. So, where would I type all that info? All I get is a large box with drop downs, a slot for the single witness (First name, last name), and thats about it as far as I can recall. Thanks!!
  10. Enlist Me!

Hiya, welcome! This sim is awsome. I was using my MoMo pedals as rudder pedals, just had to go into the Logitech configuration and put them on same axis (rather than individual axi, like gas pedal/brake pedal). Works really well, although I have to admit they are quite sensitive.
  11. @BH-- lol I wonder if it was a temporary field to use, say, their primary field having been bombed out? I imagine a couple of nights of sleeping under the wings, or curled up in the ditch.
  12. Claim submissions

Thanks Olham, much appreciated. Now to figure out where I have to write all that (i.e., which slot?)
  13. Appologies if the style is a bit off, or details a bit sparse...
  14. Letters from the Front

Spankings perhaps? More blather from me...
  15. Hi all, Just ordered CFS3 and OFF and am looking forwards to getting stuck in. Currently also playing RoF, IL2, and BoBII. Have heard a lot of good things about this sim and its community, and I love sim flying and immersive campaigns, so it was a natural. Looking forwards to having a lot of fun! Thanks =) Cheers, Balders (aka Leaf85 on SimHQ)
  16. Awaiting arrival

Oddly enough, I've found it (don't want to say 'easier') rather intuitive on full settings, so I've fiddled around with the settings enough to go from 130% to 100% now, thus conforming with the ideals of 'DiD', and making the sim very desirable to 'game'. Sweet! Thanks for the link, Olham !
  17. After my last mission I need a drink! Thanks :D
  18. Awaiting arrival

I had my settings on Die Roll, versus Dead is Dead, but then read Siggi's thread on DiD which I must admit, is normally how I 'play' my combat flightsims. Love the fact that there is a set of guidelines! Think I'll try pseudo-DiD (running at 80% vs 130% due to flight model choice) until I get used to how the sim flys/all the subtle nuances. I was keeping a pencil and paper record while flying the SP campaign in RoF, including keeping a journal/letters home-- a throw back to my boardgaming days (Fight in the Skies, Richtofens War, Knights of the Sky etc)-- so I love this aspect of OFF already. So Far... Flieger Rudolph Holt, Jasta 1, Aug. 22 1916, flying Halb, second mission crash landed after brief spat with two Nieuports...hospitalised until October 1916 (likely to be retired so new settings can take effect)-- total flight time 87 minutes Caporal Jean-Phillipe Dumont, Esc.3, Nov. 1916, flying S.P.A.D VII, Killed in action after destroying an enemy Halb., lost too much height and went down into trees after being hit by ground fire. Total flight time 53 minutes. Off to the recruiting office!
  19. Awaiting arrival

    Extra frothy cappucino, Sir?
  20. Awaiting arrival

The Halb is a nice machine-- much nicer than I expected. My first pilot hasn't died yet, but has pranged the undercarriage twice now, and wounded himself on the emergency landing on the second mission. Back at the aerodrome now :D Just want to say this sim has already exceeded my expectations, in so many ways, including this fine community. I'm so glad I found this (via SimHQ). THANK YOU! Salute. I will likely also fly an RFC series of pilots and Escadrille du Chasse as well as Imperial Air Service-- just want to experience it all!
  21. Awaiting arrival

WOOHOO! Its here! <happy dance> <dashes off to install and flyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy>
  22. I'd hazard it wasn't a commonplace/mass produced addition to a crate, given the differences in the boxes, cowling and 'fan' prop. Whatever it is, I think there is a variability to the power (??rheostat control?) of the prop spin. The brass-like clockworks and ?rocker arm are gorgeous, but I really have no idea what they do...I'll say its a meteorological device that records on a circular graph chart and transmits some data back to Corp, from a balloon basket, with the fanprop being a windspeed measurer. Manufacturer... 'Handmade Device for testing purposes'.
  23. It may be the power generator for the searchlight attached to the Spad XI nightfighter, built by Societe Pour L'Aviation et ses Derives, with the mini-prop being the generators fan. At least the wood looks like SPAD interior wood...
  24. That would be sweet indeed. Then be able to imagine enjoying a bottle of '08 Moselle while lounging on the estate grounds, or a captured cognac in the drawing room of the estate...
