Enhanced gun sight for Mirage IIIc Shahak in woi

Thanks, I had trouble with it myself. Can this be done for the Nesher too? -
I fly in WOI. In Campaign, especially the Yom Kippur campaign, I've developed a tactic to reduce air threats over time. Even when not on SEAD missions I carry a couple of Shrikes. I sometimes also arm my wingman who I can order to strike a specific target with Shrikes. I make it my secondary objective to take out one or two SAM radars per mission, no matter what mission, even A2A missions over enemy territory. If I have surplus clusters and the mission objective is complete, I try to drop them on air defense threats. Over time, in the dynamic campaign, air defense threats start to dwindle and eventually I find partially destroyed and radarless SAM sites when I arrive on the battlefield. I don't think it's historical, and I guess there weren't that many Shrikes around to send them out with every mission. SAM Radar operators where also smarter at defending against ARMs. It also goes against the principle of concentration of force. But I think the knowledge that every flight may be armed for RADAR could have confused and agitated the RADAR operators into panic and confusion. and when large scale SEAD operations weren't possible this attrition method may have been effective.

FPS Graphins and Game Difference
ziker posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I've just upgraded to: Intel Q9400 Geforece 9800GTX+ 4GB DDR 2 1066 Baracuda HD with 32MB cash I'm still having a bit of trouble running WOI at High let alone Unlimited settings. When I deisplay FPS I get two readings, Graphics and Game. On my old system there wasn't that much difference between them, but now I can be at 50 on the Game reading and 15 on the Graphics reading. What's the difference between these two readings? -
FPS Graphins and Game Difference

OK, by lowering the amount of ground objects to medium I was able to bring the game back to reasonable FPS. I expected to be able to play on at least on high settings with my new rig. especially since I play at 1024x768. The 9800GTX+ should be able to handle just about anything at that resolution. -

For me they are both new. Yes the first one only has numbers to recognize who the message is for. The seccond has much more detail. Yes they say the flight name the message is for. you get messages like: "Anvil Lead, SAM Launch, 2 O'clock 8 miles". "Zeebra Lead, Bandits, 11 O'clock, 6 miles, Low". "Oyster 3, Bandit on your six, Break left! Break left!" I'm writing this from memory so it may not be perfect recal, but you get the idea. It's a very small download, and extreemely easy to install and uninstall. Just add one of teh two supplied .inis to your flight folder to try it, and remove or rename to disable. Give it a try and see if you like it. -

Great work, The Radio Chatter is actually useful now. I now know who a "SAM launch!" call is actually aimed at. Instead of mostly ignoring the radio that keeps on shouting warnings for stuff that happening miles away to a different flight, now I know when it is my wingman or other element that is in trouble. This little .ini upgrades the whole game. on any mission in any plain you'll benefit from the extra info the radio now offers. Information is power. the 2nd high detail option is far more detailed, but can get cluttered in high intensity combat. especially in SAM rich environments. A2A missile launch alerts are still not personalized so you still don't know who's supposed to break. You or some guy 300 miles away. So there's still room for improvement. Enjoying this one very much, -

Al Mansura Air Battle mission pack for WOI
ziker replied to Gepard's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - File Announcements
I've been looking for info on this battle on the net, trying to see if I can find another version for the events. So far I haven't been able to find anything accept for the account on the EAF website. after finding nothing under El-Mansura either in English or Hebrew I tried looking for IAF losses figures, but here too I found no mention of special losses in Egypt. This guy researches Ejections and while his list is far from perfect, he has none for 14 October 73: http://www.ejection-history.org.uk/PROJECT...es/1973.htm#oct The official IAF website (Hebrew) report for the 14th of October 73 on the Egyptian front concentrates mostly on the IAFs efforts to stop the Egyptian attempt to push further into Sinai on that day. It chronicles a number of CAS missions flown that day and that 3 confirmed and 1 probable EAF aircraft flying in support of the Egyptian thrust into Sinai were shot down. However it also states that in other actions that day a total of 13 Egyptian Interceptors were shot down and another 2 were destroyed on the ground. This may very well refer to a strike on an airfield. If anyone can find any info on this battle I'll be happy to see what we can find out. -
Al Mansura Air Battle mission pack for WOI
ziker replied to Gepard's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - File Announcements
In Hebrew we have a saying: Go ahead and prove that you don't have a sister. This refers to a situation where someone calls your sister a whore, now go ahead and prove you don't have a sister. The probable reason why the IAF doesn't acknowledge the battle of Al-Mansura as depicted by the EAF is that it didn't happen. Not in the way described here at least. The Battle of Al-Mansura was indeed probably the high point for the EAF in the war. It demonstrated the contrast between the EAF of the 67 war and the EAF of the 73 war. Highlighting its ability to defend its airbases. It also so happens that Egypts current president Hussni Mubarak was responsible for this success. It is pretty obvious that it was chosen as a propaganda item to lionize the EAF and the president. 17 to 6 losses? I think the story grew somewhat in the telling. During the Yom-Kippur war the IAF was unable to obliterate the EAF as it did in 67. Air-bases were constructed with hardened shelters for the aircraft and were defended vigorously. I've read a number of accounts by IAF pilots of difficult missions against Egyptian air-bases, I don't know if they refer to Al-Mansura in particular. I was able to find an account of a strike by 8 F-4s on an EAF base on the 11th of October where 2 F-4s were shot down. In general the EAF still took very heavy losses in air to air engagements and spent most of the war cowering near it's bases. While the IAF suffered most of it's losses at the hands of the EADF and it's SAMs and AAA. The EADF was not part of the EAF and most of the time they didn't operate in the same airspace to avoid fratricide. This again illustrates the EAF need to squeeze some kind of success story out of the war, since it did not share in the EADFs success. ______ Ziker -

Swallow = Snunit I think that's already been taken by the Grob G-120A trainer. It is a bit hard to find new names, not many birds of prey or weather effects left. With the F-16I the IAF asked the public to send in suggestions. -
avoiding SAM's ?
ziker replied to oded's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Fly very very low, (I find this most effective). Try to put the missile on your left or right beam (shoulder), then when it getting close turn hard into it, it may not be able to make the turn and miss you. The A-4 doesn't have an afterburner. you may want to read a bit about the planes you fly, I find it makes it much more fun to fly them. About ECM Chaff and Flairs even I don't really know what exactly the IAF had in 73. Internal ECM wasn't available in fighters of the period as far as I know, but there were pods you could carry. I know F-4s carried them, not sure about A-4s. Try to select a squadron flying the A-4H, then you'll at least have the threat warning display. and if you can spare the hard points, carry a couple of AGM-45 Shrikes and fire them at those SAM radars. ziker replied to grant977's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
That's Ze'ev for Wolf in Hebrew. Nesher refers both to Eagle and Vulture, and according to babylon translator to griffin as well. However I think the reference in this case was to Eagle. at the moment the IAF seems to go for weather related names. F-16C/D Barak = Lighting F-15I Ra'am = Thunder F-16I Sufa = Storm Though I think they may have exhausted this this avenue. They may have to resort to using old names with numbers, like the U.S. with the Lighting II. Tough this is already being used to distinguish aircraft variants. For example F-16A/B Nets aircraft that arrived from USAF surplus in 1994 and were not upgraded like the IAF A/B models where called Nets-2 to distinguish them from the rest of the Nets fleet. I'll back Ze'ev, It starts a new line of the dog family that hasn't been explored yet. and it's my fathers name and I'd love to have a fighter named after him Ziker -
I'm new to FE. First campaign mission I'm taking off in the dark? OK maybe, but then I'm enganged in the dark as well. The sun is beggining to show on the horizon but I"m still having serous truble seeing anything. did they really take off in the dark in WWI? maybe pree dawn lighting isn't modeled correctly?

Flying low and slow on landing approach I found myself flying sideways about 20-30 degrees. I wanted to turn a bit to the right but the plane kept going sideways to the left. I like the fact the the challenge in this game is flying the plane and not the technology. I'll need a bit of advice on how to cmpansate for such side slipping. Thanks

Thanks, I was flying the SE5a.

PGMs and Counter Mesures
ziker posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I have been away from SF for a while now. (I know, I know, I've been bad) ;) Any way, I've seen that many new PGMs, ECM pods and flare and chaff despensers have been developed for SF. My Q is, how do they work in game? Does ECM effect inbound missiles? Do chaff and flairs have an effect? I understand that PGMs will go for teh selected target. But do they have any limitations? is there a deference between them or do they just fly to the target box with 100% acuracy? What parameters are there to play with? Thanks, Ziker -

Hi MK2, I'm looking forward to your new mideast campaign. I helped USAFMTL with the old one. I'm quite good at teh history and have a rough idea as to the structure of teh campaign data file in SF. Though I haven't tuched it since working with USAFMTL on the first mideast campaign. Any way I'd be happy to hear about what your planning to do and help if I can. If you wish to discuss this privately you can mail me at: krisher(at)hatzor.org.il Ziker
