  1. If I do and it's good enough, I will donate it to the cause.
  2. Here's a pic of my first go at gMax. Actually, after 3 years of trying and giving up regularly, I finally sat down and started to seriously look into it. Bullethead also helped tremendously with understanding the initial setup of the images and lining them up properly. This is just a first prototype so it is imperfect, but I want to start with a clean slate and try to get a bit more precise, and hone the skills for building.
  3. Thankyou Shred! No I don't have a Datafile going yet. I have some info on the type but it's very limited. Really only covers the top speed I'm guessing at sealevel, and which it lists at 109 max mph, and 97 at 10k ft. Time to 5k is 9.25 minutes, and they list 10k at 24.30 minutes, and 51.55 to 14k, even though it shows a ceiling of 13,500ft. So that's a little odd, but it does mention heating, radio (wireless) and camera equiptment as part of the load. Rather interesting to see the mention of radio. And last of all, 1 spandau, and one parabellum. It doesn't mention anything about ordinance but they did do trench attacks with them, and they were a popular plane for that purpose. Fuel loadout was 35 gallons but no endurence info. I'm gonna guess Imperial as the book is from Britain. It was enterred in a response for a light attack type, with a max weight of 360kg loaded (793lbs) Aside from that it's pretty sketchy. So anything you can dig up on the type, or may have in your collection of info would be a great help! I was going to try to look up the CLIV they have in Britain to see ifthey have any useful info, but I've not gotten that far yet. And there are enough differences in the two models from aerodynamics, to size, so it would be a hack job trying to combine them into one. Especially if I get to the CLIV unless someone gets there before me. So if you've got any other things that need to be used for this, or ideas for things, I'm never too proud to hear from folks. Especially when one is up close and in the thick of the project. Miss the forest through the trees type thing. Besides, it frees me up to consentrait on the model and the details associated with it. So please, feel free to offer up stuff. It will only help things go quicker. Now all I need is a usb plug linked dierectly to the old k-noggin to assimilate all the info in the SDK files. Thanks again Shredward! Btw, that info on the Mercedes DII you sent will work out perfectly! Between the tech drawings and the Mark Miller detailed color drawings, I will be able to make a nice representation of the powerplant. Plus I was just re-reading and forgot there some issued with the 185hp BMW engine and designated the CLIIa, and from what it says, the BMW powered planes had better streamlining on the front end.
  4. ATI or Nvidea

I too have been an owner of both. The ATI cards are putting out some good power for the cost. So as uncleal and Bandy said, it really depends on what you plan on doing and what your needs are. The reason for my last purchase of Nvidia was the power of the card, as ATI was still about a year from having a powerful card, but also, my older ATI cards required more fiddling with drivers and settings for different games, where the Nvidia cards have been rather stable, and require no individual setups for different games unless I wish to tweak something specific for a game because it will benefit from it. Honestly though, if money is an issue, go for the ATI cards, as you will get more horsepower for your money as things go these days.
  5. OFF or RoF? Help the n00b!

I can't say what RoF uses, as I stopped following it when I found out that offline play was going to be like a redheaded stepchild, so I lost interest in it. Eye candy only goes so far for me. I don't have a lot of time to commit to online flying, and this wireless internet setup just isn't as good as cable service. But since we're out in the boonies, it's the best I can get. Tactics are the rudiments of aircombat. Learning how each plane operates, from basic to complex manouevers is part of the learning curve of any sim. I too favor the older simulators. My first was the original RB from Dynamix, and AOTP, and AOE. Microprose Pacific Airwar was another, as they didn't cover the whole war, and every theater, they were starting to detail out the planes and other objects in the game for the era. EAW, BoB, and a few others, ship and armour games. I have had IL2 for some time, but the offline play sufferred so it was only an occassional flight here and there for me. The only jets I like are the Meteor, and the 262, so passed WWII, I don't bother. Just my preference is all. I am learning model building right now, and have been reading the elements of the game engine so I can plug in all the necessary elements for flight dynamics, but haven't got that far yet, so I don't know for sure every aspect that is covered by the game engine. Once I get done with the model I'm sure I'll have a better idea of everything it does and doesn't do, unless there are things that can be worked around.
  6. Oh man, if you have those in bmp form, it would be a great help! Evert little deatail makes a difference! And I have been reading the SDK, and was thinking how to annimate some parts, and your mentioning the VC is what I think I may be looking for. If they wouldn't annimate, it wasn't that big an issue, as they don't have a large field of travel. Maybe 15 degrees maximum. So their movement wouldn't be as critical as the main parts of the plane that are needed and recognised by the game engine. So the if there is need of a tradeoff, that's fine. Most important thing is I don't feel like I'm doing this anymore.
  7. Been searching for a couple hours now for some decent Mercedes DIII 3 view drawings. If anyone has any, or has a link to a good set, it would be appreciated. I have some images from Arizona Model Aircrafters, but they aren't very good quality. Thanks in advance!
  8. OFF or RoF? Help the n00b!

Unknown pilot, OFF is a wonderful WWI campaign simulator. With everything set to realistic, you won't go out and rack up a bunch of kills every mission. You will be lucky to stay alive to fight another day. The offline campaign is the strongest point. If you try to fly these birds like a WWII or newer types of planes you will have a constant issue of wing shedding. And a great loss of altitude rather quickly as the rest of the plane breaks up on the way down, oh and no parachute to save yourself either. The folks who put this together were also invloved with the supermods for the old RB3D simulator. Even though the base of the game is the old CFS3, when you step into OFF you've pass through the looking glass Alice. It's a whole different world. The only thing missing is the smell of burning castor oil and engine exhaust, along with cordite when you fire your guns. Oh yes, btw, like a mushroom on a tree, it grows on you. Especially when you start to get used to how the planes fly and fight.
  9. The Sim I used to play before OFF

I still have my RBII disk, RB3D disk, and HASP and WFP6 or 7 I think are burned on a disk somewhere. With HASP, and WFP, RB3D was a whole new game. It definitely revamped the vanilla version, and was far more stable. HASP was great for when you had those days where you were pressed for time and didn't want to mess with updating CM11 or needed a break from the WFP in general. OVS did a real good job on his supermod for that one. I liked Rabu's terrain that HASP used better though. The colors weren't as washed out. And being a painter from time to time, I like vibrant colors.
  10. The Sim I used to play before OFF

Same here. Even with XP and the hoops that had to be jumped through were worth the effort. Aside from being a very old game engine, it was a lot of fun until BHAH came along. I can live with the things that still have to be dealt with, and I was looking forward to BHAH since last January. With every little thing the team members address, it gets better and better. Like a fine wine.
  11. Nahhhhh, not majic uncleal. One of the features I noticed since Vista. The OS will let you know if there are new drivers available for your rig's compnents. But since I have about 5 games that I like to mess with, I found that I need to be careful as there can be issues with some drivers in 1 or more of them, so once I find a good set of drivers that work all around I stick with them until the verdict is in from all the forims as I find it pita to revert back to the ones I was using then go back and reconfigure every game. Windows also has a generic driver for nvidia and ati so when you first fire it up, it isn't like the old Win98SE days where you had to jump through a bunch of hoops just to get to the settings page for your video card. Liked your last joke though, it was "utterly" hilarious!
  12. OT - Swirling the Glass

Sehr gut Herr Duce! I must admit my favorite vineyard is Wilhelm Friedrick Gymnasium von Trier. Old vineyard back to something like 1543 or there abouts.
  13. OT - Swirling the Glass

No auslese, or spatlese? Lieb Frau Milch nein?!
  14. The issue with the triplane's top wing was from exposure to the elements. There was a problem where moisture collected in the box spar and over time it reduced the strength of the spar, said by some to have the strength of a wet cigarette. That is what I read in one of my long lost books some time ago. If memory serves this caused the fabric to rot and come off too. By December the problem had been sorted out and rectified, but the pilots still had misgivings about the type.
  15. Thank you Red-Dog! Glad to have inspired you to get back to it! Just a little piece of advice, is to save your work after every major tweak or addition. That way you can go back to a previous level to fix things if they don't work, instead of deleting and restarting your project. It saves many headaches. I had to restart mine 3 times before I was satisfied with the results I was getting. But if you have your initial set up with your drawings to work from saved, it makes the project go easier. That Fokker is looking pretty darn good to start with, so like Hairyspin says, keep at it!
  16. Here's the latest of the Halberstadt CLII with bracing wires, thanks to stumpjumper. I also have been doing work to revise some inaccuracies in the basic design. The aileron system is rather interesting. It used control rods connected to belcranks in the top wing right above the fuselage. A sturdier design than cables for the controls and they wouldn't get damaged as quickly by small arms fire or the light machinegun fire from other planes. This is really a neat experience building this model.
  17. I think F5 clears the info lines. As for the keyboard layout, I don't think there is any other way to get to the commands outside the 3D gameshell. Just do a free flight non combat mission, and play with the key commands until you get the settings the way you like them. Also, you can adjust your stick null zones in there too, and sensitivity so that you can have a little more stick movement which helps to prevent stalling in turns, or what feels like over controlling. My stick was very sensitive at first until I remembered to go in there. Now my flying surfaces don't go to full throw unless I have the stick all the way over either side. Same for the elevator and rudder too. It does make flying easier.
  18. These guys are or were at one time, wooden model builders. That's the cool thing about building wooden models static or flying. You learn a lot of skills doing it, and it helps to be a scratch builder as you can figure out little proceedures for construction like making jigs for bending and holding things until they are set, or assembled. Even a 1/6th scale DVa I built many years ago was built like the real deal. Jig for fuselage formers until the stringers are added, and steam bent plywood skin. It was like buidling a 1/6th scale version of the real thing. But we didn't have inline model engines in those days. It would have been neat to have been able to build one in Dad's machine shop in the garage. So I had to settle for a diesel model engine.
  19. Some Photos of theGreat War

Thanks Von Paulis! Some very good pics there, and not just the airwar, but all the other aspects covered.
  20. OFF or RoF? Help the n00b!

Yeah, just have to get used to the graphics setup, as there are some hoops to jump through on that one. I will suggest though, once you have all the graphics settings qued up, either write them down, or take a picture of your setting with printscreen, and print it out for future reference like driver updates and stuff like that.
  21. OFF or RoF? Help the n00b!

Vyrago, If you have an affinity for all things WWI, then OFF is the way to go. It has a learning curve though, since these are not high powered planes. Even WWII planes perform better. They were low horsepower because of the technology of the day. So once you takeoff, you won't be hitting the ABs for a vertical climb to 30k. It takes time to climb to altitude, and the higher up you go over 8k ft, the more the performance degrades. So you will learn how to pick your fights. How to set up the perfect pounce, and get out of the line of fire before the enemy can respond. And yes, there are many different planes to fly, including 2 seaters if you want to be a recon / bomber pilot. You can also pick different stages of the war to fly in. From the very early types, from 1915, up to the hot rods of 1918. Just remember not to dive those "V" strut planes too steeply, or you will see you lower wing(s) sheer off. A common problem for them yet pilots soldiered on with them. So for the investment, OFF offers a wider variety for offline play, from single missions to fully blown campaigns. And as Olham said, you can enjoy online play too. So you have the best of both worlds, if you don't mind the investment in time and effort. Also, the customer support here is the best I've seen in a very long time. There are always many here willing to offer assistance for any issue that may arrise. Just out of curiosity, what are your computer specs?
  22. Views aren't working ?!?

Try the Scroll Lock button. My wireless keyboard doesn't have one, but if I hit F12 I can pan around with the hat switch on my stick. Don't have track ir either. I don't fly enough to warrent it. And I'm so used to the old school of padlock, on and off to keep oriented, that I get along just fine that way. I think Scroll Lock helps with using the keypad too, but not positive, as I don't care to scan the sky with the keys. Too many keys and joystick buttons to worry about as it is. Hope it helps!
  23. OT: District 9

I like Farscape a lot. Good stories, and good actors. Very innovative for a "space" sci-fi series.
  24. Running 2 GTX 260s in SLI. Good FPS with no issues. Was having a few issues until I did some sorely needed updates to rig with being offline for quite a while getting my uncle out of Detroit. But once the updates were done, I had a marked improvement with every simulator. Up to 25 - 30 fps improvement.
  25. Retreating

Yeah, but it's hard to run away in a DRI! The old outclimb them works to a point. But don't try diving too far, as you will have the stick all the way forward and the nose will start to come up anyway. The DVII, and Pfalz DII are good for diving and running. Very sturdy planes in the dive.
