  1. Snowy Isle of Wight

Finally got a real snow storm here in Michigan! This is what I remember as a kid, accept that we used to get it as early as All Hallows Eve. Then the morning after: And a rainbow while a few flakes were falling:
  2. It 's like comparing apples to oranges. Arena style is just that. Fully active front campaign, is completely different.
  3. New Year Resolution

Finnish the trees in the 5 acre spread in the spring. Finnish the interior of the house for my uncle, (square up the doors, and install all the baseboards and corner trim pieces), add the top ledge to the porch railing out front, and paint the entire railing. Paint the back deck, rescuff the bottom of the boat so I can paint the thing and have it stick, along with the water line. Try to get hired on somewhere, hopefully. That's really starting to suck bigtime, but caregiving for my elderly uncle is keeping me busy.
  4. Thanks OBD! You guys are the best! This is the best investment in entertainment since buying my 40 year old classic fishing boat! Many hours of enjoyment for the cost, just can't be beat. And your support is superb for the product.
  5. How things have changed

Yeah seeing the crew bail was rough. I used to have a Yosemite Sam audiofile I downloaded that had the crew cursing like him as they fell. Got my butt shot off the first time I heard it, as I roared, and that was the end of that. That was funny hearing it.
  6. Cool! Thanks Hairyspin! That will give me a break from messin' with the boolean stuff attaching things. I think I'll finish the rest of the tail surfaces, and the topwing tonight.
  7. how to claim downed aircraft

Well, they usually do end up chopped liver! I think I'll opt for the souvenier collecting option.
  8. Snowy Isle of Wight

Didn't want to suggest that. Some folks are dangerous! Just look, we fly simulated WWI aeroplanes and shoot at things! I don't know if I'ld trust any of us with a cigarette lighter, or a potato gun for that matter. Actually though, the windshield spray de-icer works really good, but the method is a little intricate, since the spray nozzle doesn't use a tube to direct the spray. If you can fit a nozzle from a WD40 can, or any other penetrating oil spray, just start the key into the lock so you can spray it into the tumblers. Just make sure you have a rag handy to wipe any overspray off the paint.
  9. OT-Wings of Prey

Boy, you would think that wanting people to buy the game would be enough for them to figure out alternative ways around the standard methods.
  10. The Pfalz IIIa is Killing Me!

With the Pfalz DIII, and DIIIa, gain altitude and try to keep it. Use a diving tactic to pounce on the E/A, but at all costs, avoid the turn fight. It doesn't manouever worth a damn. Great for balloon busting though, as it was like the SPAD in a dive. Won't shed the lower wing(s) in a powerdive. But it is definitely not a stay and linger type, unless you wish to keep the gravediggers busy. When flying the type, I will use boom and zoom attacks, and if the situation is is such, after making 1 pass, dive for the nearest airfield and pray. The wingmen are foolish to stay and fight with the Pfalz. The plus side, of the plane, it is very sturdy compared to Albatros Fighters. It dives well, which is good for slashing attacks, and shooting gasbags. Drawbacks to the type, is that the plane trades agility for sturdiness, and could have used the either the 185 or 200 hp inline engines. The type would have really benefited from a v-type powerplant, all-be-it a major undertaking in the redesign of the nose would have been required. Hey FB, just pretend the Pfalz company provided you with our own personal uprated DIIIa with either of the above mentioned engines. Kinda like Adolph Galland had a 109 that used 96 octane gas instead of the standard 87 rating. I think he even used one that burned 100 octane gas. Same gas I used in my 1968 Torino that ran a 429 cu. in. V8 Cobrajet.
  11. OT: RB redux1.2

With all the add-ons, RB3D kept going for quite some time. To see the MP still going is cool though.
  12. Snowy Isle of Wight

For frozen doorlocks, apply heat in any form possible. Once you get it open, have a thin oil ready in a spray can. Any thin penetrating oil will work. What happens, is the factory and maintenemce shops will put grease on the nechanism, and when it gets cold, the grease freezes.
  13. Cant seem to fly today

Yep. Lost my pilot the other day, due to a collision with a SPAD 7. Ripped the bottom right wing off, and nothing worked to keep it going. Every time I would almost recover, over the top and into a spin we go.
  14. Just a little update on how it's goin'. Decided to start fresh after the rough-in of the first round. Bullethead, thanks for the written instructions. They make much more sense now after the initial "need to get used to it" routine. The water ain't so murky now. They make a lot more sense now. Trying to describe something that intricate for a rookie is difficult at best. And you did an exceptional job at it. Still have some things to sort out, like an easier way to make wingtips. But I'll figure it out. And the darn fin and stab won't weld on the centerline. Not a big deal, just another hedge to hop. Anyways, got the lower wings done, and I'm just curious if the flight model can incorporate "washout" in the wings, as the lower wings has washout at the wingroot, and the wingtips. A pic in my WWI Fighter book shows a nice end-on of the trailing edge which curves down away from the fuselage, and then curves back up at the tip. If the flight model can incoprorate this, I will take the time to model it on the lower wings. So here's an update pic of the lower wings and fuselage: Thanks British_eh! Hope your start isn't as rocky as mine was.
  15. Halberstadt CLII actually. It reminds of one of my old R/C trainers from the 70s when dad was teaching me how to fly. It wasn't a scale plane, but it was cool in GAS markings. An Albatros C type would be nice, but I couldn't find very good 3 views as that was what I was originally trying to do. I still look for it, but this is a good learning model with the curved and rounded nose and basic box fuselage. So I get to play with compound curves that end in flat sides and bottom.
  16. Snowy Isle of Wight

Some spots on the bays where the currents are very very mild, the ice is 5 to 8 inches thick. Almost time to go auger some holes in the ice, drink beer, and spear pike.
  17. Nah dude you were a great help, and between both of you I got it figured out. Finn's vid is a good one for setting it up with visual and vocal instruction, accept for the older version of gMax he's using as the material editor is different. You did good, even the parts that clear as Mississippi river water after a downpour.
  18. OT...For W7 Users

Cool, just printed out the page so when I do eventually upgrade windows to 7 from vista 64 I'll definitely do that little trick.
  19. Snowy Isle of Wight

16 inches isn't too bad. Watching people who aren't used to driving in it is priceless! As long as there isn't much wind, it shouldn't be too bad. Out west in the mountains, 16 inches was dusting. But the -20F temps were rough. Trying to work out in it really sucked, as your clothes would freeze solid after they got wet from snow. Dressing in layers was a must. Anyways, enjoy the winter wonderland!
  20. That "other WW1 flight sim"

Used to have this old board game when I was a kid. The folks gave it to my cousins when I moved away in 81 and from what I heard, they destroyed it. Would be neat to have it for old time's sake. http://www.dogfightgame.com/parts.html
  21. I used Finn's Backdrop video tutorial, and the only thing you need to do after creating the box, is drag the side image so the CoG lines up on 0,0,0, coordinates. Cool thing is, the top and front images will follow as it's tied together. Just can't remember where I got Finn's video tut from. It may have been over at SoH. Btw, thanks for the compliments! Just having a hit and miss issue with getting the fuselage halves to weld together. Other than that, it's been interesting learning.
  22. how to claim downed aircraft

The trouble is though, having like 10 or 11 rejections in a row for lack of corroboration when your wingie was there with you. And I had good run there. Weather wasn't bad or anything like that. I think I want an option to land and collect a souvenier from the wreckage.
  23. how to claim downed aircraft

I've had 11 of the last 14 kills rejected even with my wingman as a witness, and covering me in a fight. We have followed them all down and watched them go boom when they hit the deck, and they have crashed on our side of the lines. So as it stands, I have 33 claims, and 14 confirmations. So it just depends on the roll of the dice.
  24. That "other WW1 flight sim"

Just took a look at it. Although the graphics look dated, if it has a decent campaign, and FM along the lines of OFF, and RB3D, I would buy it. The gameplay in more ways is more important than pretty pictures and eyecandy. ROF from what I've seen is a good idea in principle, but the requirements to have internet access to play a single player game is rediculous. And if it has that many quirks, then the requirement they have is really out there. I have watched it from the time it was first announced, but since like IL2 it is geared more towards online play, I don't really want to spend anything on it. That's what I always appreciated about games like RB3d, and OFF, is they catered to both. For those who like offline play, there is a great campaign, and OFF's has developed nicely with each major release, even if a few corners need honing with a mini-patch. The other thing I really appreciate about OFF, is the team was honest from the start, in that the individual was not misled into thinking they were getting a complete game out of the shoot. It is realized that it gets better with each Phase that is released. So you know from the get go, that things are compensated for, and will be addressed in the future. It doesn't get any better than that.
  25. how to claim downed aircraft

Unconfirmed by army, means unconfirmed. Don't go riding around the countryside looking for your downed enemy.
