3ds max model tips and hints
Jimbib replied to russouk2004's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Knowledge Base
Fix to get rid of the right-click menu ghosting bug in 3DS Max 2009: Navigate to your 3ds Max installation folder (under Autodesk, in Program Files) Copy and paste 3dsmax.exe into the folder, creating 3dsmax - copy.exe Edit your 3ds Max launch shortcut's 'Target' field to launch 3dsmax - copy.exe (right click, go to Properties) Run the shortcut as Administrator (very important) The issue should be fixed, or should occur much less frequently -

I too put up with this bug for years, but this fix worked for me: https://forums.revora.net/topic/113681-fixing-the-right-click-bug-on-3ds-max-8-on-windows-10/ -
STRIKE FIGHTERS 3 REQUEST
Jimbib replied to PJB's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
If that is the case, then where is SF3 and why did TK make SFMC instead? I am willing to guess it wasn't for fun, he has a business to run and that requires revenue and tough decisions to be made. SF2NA; by far the most advanced in the series, brought a load of new features over the previous SF2 titles and even that still didn't earn him anywhere near enough money to cover the costs of making it and to continue developing PC based sims... hence the move to mobile games. Here's another challenge for SF3... his last couple of PC sim titles have taught him that the income profile from his PC flight sims simply didn't cover his costs BUT,... let's imagine he did have the funding to develop it, is it really realistic to expect him to punt it all on the hope that it might break even, or would he invest it into something else which is far more likely to generate a steady stream of income? The fact that the recent crowdfunding project reached 16% of the required target showed him that there simply aren't enough people to justify it. If there were, it would have been over subscribed and it would probably be on the digital shelves by now. Please don't get me wrong in anything I have said above and in my previous post, I would absolutely bloody love for the SF* flight sim series to be revitalised and continue being developed into bigger and better sims (there's a reason we all continue to play and mod it, because it's still a really enjoyable series), but unless circumstances were to drastically change in the near future I just can't see it happening. (I really want to be wrong on this).- 69 replies

STRIKE FIGHTERS 3 REQUEST
Jimbib replied to PJB's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I would love to see an update to TK's SF series, but unless the business case stacks up for him I just can't ever see it happening. It's well known that SF2NA didn't perform well for him financially (I think he had alluded to this in old forum posts at his site) and when he tried to crowdfund a Windows 10 update it sadly didn't manage to achieve the required amount (https://fundrazr.com/31YZNe?ref=ab_2fIwazS7Daf2fIwazS7Daf). As much as I'm not a big fan of mobile games and would love to see continuous development of the SF2 series on PC, I can understand why he made the switch - just like everyone else he's got bills to pay and if he blindly stuck with the PC series with it's small yet mighty dedicated fanbase (basically us lot here) he would unfortunately have gone out of business years ago. As much as I wish it wasn't the case, I think his radio silence on the SF2 series over the last 10 (ish) years speaks for itself, if he saw a future in it I expect he would probably be a lot more vocal and interactive with the PC fanbase community.- 69 replies

Su-33 SKINS and INIs
Jimbib replied to bazillius's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
Yes, this file won't work by itself as it is only a skin, the aircraft model it would require isn't shared here at combatace as it was pirated from another source per what the others have said further up this thread. Try these instead, GKABS and torno both make excellent models: -

Second post in this thread shows how to remove a mesh from an aircraft with an .ini edit, just remember that all linked meshes will disappear with it. -
Any idea where is this Su-24 from?
Jimbib replied to simonmiller416's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Flogger23 and Sundowner have said it above perfectly... the more people who download the tools needed to create new mods the better (free ones like Blender and GIMP will do the job just fine). If there's something you want to see in game that no one else has made yet, then the best thing to do is have a go at making it. There are a tonne of very helpful people here in the forums (too many to list) that will help you along the way to learn the new skills. I for one am really excited for what Flogger23 and the Sukhoi team will produce... if his existing mods and the sneak peaks in the stickied Sukhoi thread are anything to go by, it will be more than worth waiting for. @simonmiller416 thank you once again for removing the mod, I appreciate you doing that. -

I appreciate that, thank you. @FLOGGER23 if you like I would be more than happy to help you getting this mod fully ready for release? -

@simonmiller416 I see you have decided to upload this mod for some reason despite a) it not being your mod and b) you made no effort to credit the authors despite me stating who they were in this very thread and that we are very much still around on the forums. @FLOGGER23 this appears to be the Su-24 mod you guys in the Sukhoi team have been working on that I originally passed over from The Mirage Factory, are you guys cool with this? I can see the huge amount of painstaking work you had put into this in the stickied 'Sukhois' thread: I suggest if this mod is not ready for release that it is removed until the authors of the mod are happy with it. EDIT: I have just compared the .OUT files from what you have uploaded and my original source files, they are the exact same with the same poly count, file size and file date and not the since-developed version from FLOGGER23 and the sukhoi team. I can only imagine you received a copy of this mod privately in good faith and to not share it any further, but there is a reason it has not been uploaded by a member of The Mirage Factory yet and that is because it is still work in progress and not yet ready for release. Please remove this file at this point in time, if and when it is ready it will be uploaded here by the authors. -

The creators are not all missing though? There are still quite a few of us around who were in The Mirage Factory, in my earlier post I said I intend to check the source files I have (.max, templates etc.) when I get back home and then will reassess from there. -

Jimbib replied to simonmiller416's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
I need to check my files but I believe that is the Mirage Factory Su-24 that I created the templates for and skinned when I was on the team, I believe I then passed the project over to Flogger23. I'm going out on a limb here but it may have been Tomcat74's Fencer before finding it's way to The Mirage Factory. I am away this weekend but will check my files when I get home. -

FakePilot removal of parts.
Jimbib replied to Tommy2Fast's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Disclaimer: this may or may not work... Step 1: One thing that you could try is hex edit the LOD so that the texture file format is a .tga. Alternatively, if it's your own 3d model, map the mesh with a tga. in 3ds Max and then re-export. Step 2: Convert the existing texture (I'm guessing it's a .bmp or a .jpg) to a tga, make sure it's got a transparency alpha channel enabled. (Would need to use a image editing software like Gimp, Photoshop etc.) Step 3: Compare the UV map of the pilot LOD against the pilot texture so you know where each node of the mesh is mapped on the texture. (You can use mue's LOD viewer to export the UV map of a LOD) Step 4: Delete the pixels of the alpha channel texture where you want the node of the pilot mesh to disappear (you can 'paint' them black in Photoshop). Again... this may or may not work... -

RAF Coningsby work in progress for Sundowner's awesome PR UK terrain, finally figured out the diffuse effect for the floodlights that avoids the dreaded flickering. -
