  1. RED SOX WIN, RED SOX WIN!

I was born and raised in Lowell. Moved to NH 7 years ago. What part of MA are you from?
  2. The best sim in town...

I'm a huge fan of WOV and the YAP stuff really makes it something special. Either way, you can't go wrong with a thirdwire game; you can add so much stuff that you can really make it into just about anything you want.
  3. Which type of song?

I got into NIN after seeing them(him?) open up for David Bowie awhile ago during Bowie's "Industrial" period following Tin Machine. I just started getting into Nick Cave. I've started getting these UK music magazines (MOJO and Q) and they have really turned me onto some music that I would never have discovered otherwise (such as Cave, The Jam, Jesus and Mary Chain, and a bunch of "Britpop" stuff that never really made to the US). Right now I can't stop listening to the "Black Keys", a blues/rock duo from Akron, Ohio. They do really basic blues (just guitar and drums) but they do it really well (like a really good garage/ frat house band) and I've found myself addicted.
  4. RED SOX WIN, RED SOX WIN!

Bruins?? Who are they? (Just kidding) I haven't been able to get back into the NHL since their labor problems turned me onto the AHL. We have a decent AHL team here in Manchester, NH (the Monarchs), and I've been to several of their games and it's good quality hockey at a decent price. At the last game my wife caught a runaway puck with her beer cup. I'm still not sure if I'm happy she caught the thing, or sad that she ruined a $5 beer.
  5. RED SOX WIN, RED SOX WIN!

What a great day to be from Boston. Brady throws six TD's and the Sox steam roll though game 7. GO SOX!!!
  6. How I can make a new plane?

There are some good articles in the "knowledge base" here that cover many aspects of ini. editing. P.S. Where did you get a F-22?
  7. I have a list of things that I want to do/try with my Thire Wire sims that I'll never have the time to get to. There is just so much opportunity with this series that I can't see it ever being "dead". I've noticed a couple of new people using the board who have just discovered the series recently. If they are anything like me, it's going to take them a little while to figure out how things work, and then they will be off doing their own experiments and projects. Just because there isn't any forum traffic doesn't mean things are dead. I do something that involves these sims EVERYDAY. Whether it's just checking the forum, playing the game, or trying that new mod I've been thinking about. I can't really foresee these sims ever really being "dead". There is just so much that can be done with them that I could never tire from just fiddling about with them.
  8. IIRC, in YAP you fly a Jolly and hover over the downed pilot. The helo is modded to include a downward facing "gun" and you complete the rescue by hitting the target with the gun (ironic isn't it?). This suppossdly simulates using the winch to raise up the pilot. You don't actually land to accomplish the mission. There is another mission using the A1-H in which the a/c lands on a dirt strip to simulate picking up the pilot. This only applies to the missions I purchased, I don't know if any of the other missions have different methods.
  9. I suspect it relates to the operation year. Check out this article in the knowledge base: http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=11833 That should set you right.
  10. AFAIK there is no mechanism within the game engine for a "pick up" and return, or a loiter. Perhaps you could simulate the landing by using a low level waypoint, but I don't think you could model a true landing and then return (unless you flew it yourself). The game engine was designed for airplanes and not really for helo operations, that's why such missions aren't available. I know YAP has some rescue missions using helo's, but I forget how they did it. I do recall that the rescues were simulations only and were not performed by the a/i.
  11. Since I reorganized (ok, just organized) everything a few weeks ago I haven't backed anything up. I know I should, but it feels like when you're driving the car and the tank is on Empty but you feel you can squeeze just a few more miles out of it before you really have to refill.
  12. Which type of song?

I usually listen to everything but country/western or hiphop. Classic rock (zeppelin, the who, pink floyd) is big on my iPod, but lately I've started getting into some of the new British Pop/punk bands (Artic Monkeys, Libertines,Kaiser Chiefs) and some US alternative rock/punk (White Stripes, Dropkick Murphey's, Black Keys, Killers). I'll also listen to some acoustic stuff depending on my mood.
  13. They're going to be coming after you with pointed sticks and bananas.
  14. WOE Flight stick recommendation?

I've got a cheap Logitech 3D Pro that I paid $40US for. I tried the Siatek X-52 but just couldn't get used to the feel (and the desk space). My Logitech does the job, no bells or whistles, but I like it. I recall an entire thread discussing flight sticks, so a quick search of the forum will probably turn up the info you're looking for.
  15. Well, that's the purpose of the flares. What are your game settings in terms of weapon efffectiveness and A/I ability? If the weapon is blowing up your own plane then I think something somewhere is amiss. The early A2A missiles were notoriously undependable, missing more often than not. But I've never encountered an issue where my own weapon was donwing my own plane. I'd use the Weapon Editor that came with the weapon pack and check out the setting of the weapon in question, maybe something got screwed up along the way. You can also use the editor to change the parameters for the various ordinance as well (lock on chance, range, FOV, ECM resistence, etc). I'm sure some of the more knowledgable guys here will have some specific advice that could address your problem directly. Good luck.
  16. Yeah, I should have clarified that. They do the same thing, I just found learning to use "Le Missioneur" was easier than KMD.
  17. You can program the various commands to you joystick by going to the OPTIONS/CONTROL screen from the games main menu screen. It's simply a matter of picking a command and activating the stick's button/switch in order to program it.
  18. I don't know about a basic tutorial in terms of gameplay, it's kind of just pick a plane, pick a mission and go. Configuring the stick should be easy in the using the OPTIONS selection and then choosing CONTROL on the menu screen. You can also adjust other aspects of the game; graphics, sound, game intensity (easy to Hard) etc. There is a manual included in the program file that outlines the various settings. I use an old Logitech also and have no problems. Definitely patch it up. There are a TON of downloads you can add to improve the game. Everything from additional planes, improved effects, terrains, ships, other objects, etc. The list is endless. The "Knowledge Base" found here at CA should answer most of your questions. Here is the link: http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showforum=99 Keep in mind that WOE uses the same game engine as Wings Over Vietnam and Strike Fighters. Mods that apply to those games typically can apply to WOE as well. Good luck, have fun, and let us know if you have more questions.
  19. It's a different one. I think I got it at Check6 (the french might give it away), but I found it's much easier to use than the KMD.
  20. Try using one of the mission editors to create a custom mission using the carrier as your start point. I'd recommend "Le Missioneur" mission editor; it's quite user friendly.
  21. Do I get a watch or something?

I just noticed I got upgraded to "senior member" from "valued member". Do I get a gold watch now? I bet I get the privledge of buying the first round; pints all around on me.
  22. I'm finally getting around to organising and cleaning up my SFP1/WOV stuff on the computer and I was curious as to how everyone else organises their stuff. How many and what installs do you have (ww2/korea/modern)etc.????
  23. The following tip is quoted from the Knowledge Base article "Initial Set-up Guide". It helped improve the performance on my machine. "Sundry Graphics Tips Kill the mirrors in graphics, they are monster frame-rate killers. Kill the dynamic shadows, too, they kill the frame rate, and apparently also cause CTDs. In the flightengine.ini file (in the flightdata.cat) there is something interesting! Under the section for: [HighDetailOption] HorizonDistance=75000.0 DetailMeshSize=6 DetailLevel=1 WaterEffect=1 NoiseTexture=1 MaxTextureRes=0 (you will read -1 here) The last line is the texture resolution aka mipmap LOD setting in the graphic card control panel or any tweak tool. The thing I wondered about is that the stock setting there is -1. That means that the game uses it's own mipmap setting rather than the one I set in RivaTuner. I have set the mipmap LOD to 0, cause a negative value will automatically decrease the fps rate quite a bit. Even -0,5 is too tough. When you know fly with the max detail settings in SF, you will automatically forced to fly with a mipmap detail of -1. That's a heavy load on the CPU cause the standard setting is always 0! On the ground I had around 25fps, now I have 38 with the mipmap distance to 0 and Vsync on. You can set the mipmap distance in OpenGL but not under D3D, so you need a tweaker. Always wondered, why the fps is so low in the cockpit, now I know why. It only affects the highest detail settings cause for the lower detail, there are numbers around 265 which is pretty low. Set it to 0 and you can turn on the cockpit mirrors while the game stays smooth and you can use the highest detail in the game! It runs so much smoother now. Don't know why TK decided to use -1 cause there really is almost no viewable difference in the terrain quality. Hope I could help some of you who had notoriously low fps rates. You can even try a positive value like 0,5 which wouldn't look much different either. So there is no need to drop the detail."
  24. It's not about rivet counting. You can still have the same level of gameplay and the same mass appeal, but just have it using a terrain that somewhat resembles the real world. I can't imagine anyone would choose NOT to buy the game because the terrain was TOO good.
