Is this "new look" permanent?
RamblingSid replied to Hauksbee's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
What the hell happened ? Looks bloody awful. All the charm of a used paper cup. May I respectfully say that if something isn't broken it doesn't need fixing. -
Sure is Lonely Up Here
RamblingSid replied to Cody Coyote's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Hi all, never had a problem with too few EA, to the contrary. In vanilla P3 that is. Currently with 24 RFC flying DH2s in Feb 1916, bloody EIIIs everywhere. "Feel" ? Only, Olham, if you have ffb or something. Otherwise there is no physical sensation at all to be had either in OFF or RoF: No engine vibration. No G. No landing or t/o feel. No gunfire effects. It is a testament to both OFF and RoF that there is as much immersion as there is. But it is a limitation. All the best. -
OT: Crazy weather in Newcastle!
RamblingSid replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Gawd, Flyby, that's a sad chart. Thems winter temps here. I lived in England for 25 years, the summers could be more miserable than the winters. Happy, happy times. -
Mike, that looks very nice indeed. I don't suppose it would be a ffb stick ?

Obviously a monosoupup. boomtish

OT: Guilt of Nazi children.

Olham, bravo, beautiful piece of prose. It was a terrible war. A great country was destroyed, but it was replaced by something better. -
WOFF: Sopwith Triplane pics
RamblingSid replied to Polovski's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
As per usual - gorgeous shots. I happen to think that the DH5 cockpit (HitR) is the best of the entente a/c, but I must say that the Tripe is pdg. On the scenery: from the look of it I would guess that it would take less memory to render ? Just speculating on likely settings and performance impacts of WOFF. Only 336 hours to go . -

Holy sh$t, Erik, puts my very minor irritations in their proper place. Thanks very much for the explanation. Apology not required, just get well asap. RS -

Still good damage - despite High-res Skins
RamblingSid replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Yes, Olham, it was overrated - slow, lousy above 5000 mts, dodgy kiln-dried spars. But much depended on the powerplant. RNAS Camels all (I think) had 150hp BR1 engines and they were almost as good as Snipes. RFC Camels not so lucky - 130hp Clergets, 110hp Le Rhones, how these blokes managed in late 1918 I don't know. The engine management aspect alone of rotaries is a nightmare. I think you'll find that slightly more Camel pilots were KIA than training - pretty grim. -
Still good damage - despite High-res Skins
RamblingSid replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
At the end of the war 14,166 British pilots were listed as killed. 8000 of them died in training accidents in the UK. The Camel was a dangerous aircraft to fly, no doubt. But this was compounded by an inadequate and ineffective training regime. Smith-Barry made very important changes, but all the same - 8000 men. -
Gravitating back to CA...
RamblingSid replied to Hauksbee's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I like the congenial/collegiate atmosphere here. I'ts a geat combination of erudition and fun with the odd sombre moment thrown in. A fine reflection of OFF/WOFF. Of course, I completely understand the business imperative that drove OBD to SimHQ, and I make a point of visiting - just viewed the new WOFF movie there. But I quite like OFF at CA being "unofficial". And like Lou said in another thread, SimHQ/CA is actually part of the (W)OFFworld simulation . -
While we are kicking our heels waiting for our new WOFF postings to come through... It's a dark and tragic tale (for my neighbours), but when not flying in OFF or embroiled in the mundane duties of chez RamblingSid, I am a "music hobbyist". I was moping around the other day thinking abt the great, but sadly late, Doc Watson and listening to Deep River Blues when, by a wandering and convoluted path, I stumbled upon Glider, by the equally great and sadly late Captain Beefheart. Great song imo. Although I am not a pilot it seems to capture some of the terror/wonder of flying. Do you have a favourite piece of music abt flying ?

Well, I punted on 1st April, being anni of RAF. Oh dear. Maybe I got the wrong anniversary...gods, it couldn't be... Noooo, 105 years to go. There's only one cure...I'm off on a patrol .

Hey, thanks gentlemen, and I'll check out the Al Stewart songs. Mike...orrible istories...

Oh, it's science all right. I think that the politics of AGW are another question, not much interested in that- people are entitled to hold whatever beliefs they like. Some very encouraging news is that we may have more time. Lovelock for example, has in light of the data stepped back from his very dark and catastrophic view of the timings - sorry don't have a link. At the moment most folks are more concerned with the shambolic state of the economy rather than AGW and understandably so.

I feel that massed ranks of hamsters needs to be seriously considered. Here in Australia we have ample space for a Very Massive Hamster Array, and our scientists have developed a fiendishly clever horizontal wheel. The VMHAs will be sited near to mining operations and depleted Hamsters can easily be recycled as badly needed protein for our horny-handed magnates. Of course, waste is always an issue and as you can imagine, thousands of tons of Hamster poo can cause the most intractable of problems. But our officials are in discussion with the UK govt: Westminster is the prefered location for the re-processing plant.

All the best, Typhoon, hope all goes well. Don't worry abt WOFF, probably still be waiting .

There certainly seems to be something afoot. Possibly August ? nbryant, keep that up and they'll have you in the BOC toot sweet . (Good luck, Tranquillo. The NHS is one of the best health systems in the world, you'll be in good hands. )

I loved Yeager's laconic, world-weary voice-over: "You bought the farm...get up there and try it again" or some such. CYAC started the rot alright. Even back then I thought 'geez, sims are going to be mind-boggling in the future...' and here we are .
