Those of us who grew up on numbered streets really get the short end in this game... Just sayin'.. -
Ah I'm pretty impressed, especially with the Quirck's apparent lack of maneuverability. It's evident you know this plane's abilities intimately.

Well Lt. Taylor of RFC 71 has a pending 4 plane claim, if his squad ever survives this month. #71 is down to 6 pilots out of it's normal 11 and they've dropped from average to poor rating because the new recruits get themselves picked off early. My pilot has saved more than one new pilots bacon, at least he still has his original wingman. He now has 5 claims confirmed, but the last sortie was a doozy, as they were defending a balloon, when a 7 plane mixed DVa and Pfalz DIIIa squad dropped in to shoot up the balloon and nearby airfield. That furball turned into a ground hugging, wing tip scraping snarl that Taylor had to maneuver like a demon just to avoid the cross fire. He's carrying the ball for the entire squad as it is.

No, I'll let someone else take a the next one. That's interesting about that windscreen, as that is AVRO's 504 prototype wind screen, which was used on a lot of different aircraft during the war. I can see why they removed it. Is that RFC 29 squad colors on the Vintage Aviator Dh2? I just started my 3rd pilot with them, and it seems the early DH2 is at a distinct disadvantage to the Roland CII's I can't believe how aggressive the game AI flys them, rolls and loops? -
Well I'm going by the products spec sheet, but from my own Nvidia card's settings there is a choice of 60hz refresh rate, ( whether this is vertical or horizontal??..) up to 160 hz, although my own monitor is normally limited to 75hz. I notice a particularly bad flicker with lighter colored pages, with the frequency settings at 60hz.

I have to admit I'm a bit out of my league here, I think the DH2 outer interplanes were flight group colors such as "A", "B" and "C" and the leader had these on his particular aircraft, was this a first for the RFC? I'm afraid Lou will show up and make this a Jeopardy joke.. -

1.I seem to recall that the strut colors were Wing leader stripes. 2. The windscreen, from what I've seen is largely absent, now if this was originally because the early DH2 came with a flexible mount, ( i.e. you flew with one hand on the joystick and could aim the Lewis with the other, within a limited forward arc..) I have no idea? I assume it was removed to make servicing the Lewis easier? 3. I don't know this one.. -
Well from the specs it appears to be higher than 60hz VIDEO INPUT Analog RGB analog (75 ohms, 0.7 Vp-p) Digital DVI-D (TMDS, 100 ohms with HDCP), HDMI 1.3 Frequency Fh: 24~83 Hz, Fv: 50~76Hz

I would be Lord Daddy-Bill Smokey Fourth st. Yeah, it just doesn't have the zing of Lord Gilbert Lucifer de St-Hilaire. -
All I can say is congratulations, The degree you doggedly pursued is not a field known for job prospects, you are an incredibly lucky person, I will not comment about the engagement..

Help on "contextualizing" this great game

I've been playing my RFC 71 pilot 2nd Lt. Taylor in the Dirk Gently mode. In other words, if you've read Douglas Adam's quircky detective stories, it's a little bit irresponsible, and runs a bit against the flow of the chain of command. I'm letting my whims and intuition run his campaign, so far he's been successful in shooting down 4 aircraft in 8 sorties, but he's also been shot down twice himself. Yesterday he was "sight seeing" along the front northeast of Albert, (after finishing his flight and dropping off his wingmen,) and didn't see a 5 plane Jasta 11 attack descend out of the sun. Fortunately, despite getting shot up badly, he managed to land deadstick and spent a couple of days in the infirmary. This guy has about seven lives left I figure. -

Become a member at The Aerodrome forum and read the archives. It's a bit of a hit or miss, until you get the search terms correct, but the assembled knowledge base there is the best in the whole of the Internetdom. I would also download all the books Lou has so graciously provided via Adobe .pdf format, and hit up your local library for old books on the subject. This sim teaches me new things every time I take a kite up! The actual shape and building placement of some of the airfields aren't so accurate, but the front is well modeled and the cities, towns and general lay of the front and terrain are exceptional. -

I'll try to explain it a little bit. Gyro precession is what's known as the force that resists a vector input with a comparable force at 90 degrees to the input direction, depending on of course rotation, My understanding is fairly layman-ish but it's no different to the way a gyroscope toy works. Spin up a gyroscope and hold it upright with the arc of the flywheel level with the ground Now try to rotate the gyro forwards, it will, depending on rotation of course, try to twist to the left or right. Propeller torque on the other had is the force created by the engine driving the prop through the air and it varies inversely to the actual airspeed the aircraft is flying at. This is a function of the pitch, diameter and rpm of the prop. A right hand turning prop will always make the plane want to roll to the left, and this force will vary with how close to the "pitch speed" is of said prop and the aircraft is attached to is traveling. Draggy airframes will make this worse. Add to this factor the efficiency of the propeller has in turning it's rotation into forward motion. There is a third force that effects mostly taildraggers and this is called "P force". Which is the imbalance of thrust from one half of the prop arc, to the other, of a propeller traveling through an airmass that isn't moving at 90 degrees or perpendicular to the prop arc. This can cause the aircraft to have a decidedly hard time with the tail wanting to swing to either the left or right, again depending upon the prop rotation, until the tail rises from increased airspeed, and brings the prop-arc to being nearly perpendicular to the air flowing into it. Nieuport V strutters were known to have a lot of "P force" before they got their tails off the ground, as did the Camel and Fokker DRI. This added to the treacherousness to novice pilots of these aircraft, in addition to the torque and gyro procession. I've probably confused the discussion some.. -
Since I brought it up, and I've accepted the consequences of doing so, I'm posting images, probably not worthy of desktop use of the other types of Albatross aircraft from WWI. here's two from the online sim Richthofen's Skies. An Albatross B II the Great Apple Barge, and the early series of the rather impressive CVII Albatross two seaters..

I've been playing around with Gregion a bit in Workshop's CFS3 QC. Made this vid, It's not great, I had to turn down the quality sliders a bit to bump the frame rates while Gregion was running in record mode. Here it is, wart's and all, yeah I need IR track and to turn off the target text..

Yes, Happy birthday Mightyrc! Well Olham it seems at times we do, of course it's probably wetter here than in Tolkien's fictional forest.

I've got some Trilium pictures taken outside our home from earlier today.

This one will be a fun one, This is a product of the Royal Air Factory and a very common fighter, but it's unusual in a few regards. 1. What variant is this? 2. What engine was it equipped with? 3 . There was a change in the wing structure of this aircraft, what was the nature of this change. -

1. The Fokker DVII-F with the 185 hp "overcompressed" BMW IIIa engine with the altitude compensating carburetors. 2. The Wing lozenge is 4 colors, the fuselage lozenge is 5 colors. 3. Could be Jasta 10?, Lowenhardt's? -
Well I'm finding that Gregion, with suitable tweaks in the CFS3 display, is tolerable at about 20~30FPS. Gregion 3.1 freeware 3D Game Capture It's main advantage is that it's unlimited in capture time, has no watermarks, it's hotkey configurable so it doesn't mess with custom OFF hotkey's, You can save the movie in the original screen resolution, it's sound files are configurable and it has an onboard mixer for the mike or CD music in, Avira plays well with it running under stuff, it's a really tiny download compared to the stuff UK Widowmaker linked to, ( i.e. doesn't need to update to 3.5 Net, I'm trying to keep my Windows install small..) and it has a separate compressor application, that does on-the-fly saving to either .avi, .wmv or .divx in a couple of different codex versions of each. It's too bad it doesn't do a final save as an .flv for YouTube, but I'm sure there's some apps that can manage that. Someone should give it a try, I like it a lot.

Hear, Hear! Happy Easter whether devout or carnal. I'm just happy it's getting warmer outside,...(bbrrrr!)

Looks like it's about 9.95 Euro's to register. I'd like to get it if it would run decently on my machine, the register price is a bit high.

I just installed Gregion on my 'puter. For freeware it's pretty nice, if your machine is running a high end Vid card and the game you record is running faster than say 60 fps normally It has a lot of features, full screen, and some percentages of full screen, user selected resolution, user selected FPS and in game FPS adjustment, plus it warns in game if the FPS's slow down because of video card restrictions. When you run it at a percentage of full screen it runs faster, but reduces your field of view severely. Lots of different video and sound codecs and choices, it's really full featured, but, it runs pretty crappy with OFF on my machine. In contrast, RC Deskpilot, which generally runs at over 100FPS on my rig, runs under Gregion great. The video's quality are nice, it comes with an additional app that does further .avi compression, and the main app saves in .avi and .wmv files. The sound is a bit muted and I've yet to find a volume control in Gregion.
