File Name: Farman F.40 File Submitter: Stephen1918 File Submitted: 17 March 2015 File Category: Other Entente Aircraft The Farman F.40 was a joint design by the two Farman Brothers, Maurice and Henri, combining features of the MF.11 and HF.22. Like the other Farman designs, placing the engine in the rear gave the gunner an open field of fire. The F.40 was used for reconnaissance and as a light bomber and was widely used by most of the Entente forces. The long wingspan gave stability, but made it slow to maneuver. French squadrons began replacing it in 1916. My plane includes loadouts for a light bomb load and for Le Prieur rockets. I have included three skins, French, Belgian, and Russian. Decals and my skinning templates are included in the download. I have included ojcar's "DummyMachineGun" data, Peter01's Lewis Machine Gun data and P10ppy's Le Prieur rockets with this download. Warning The Farman F.40 has a wider wingspan than First Eagles expects so if you start on the runway, your wings will be touching the wings of the planes next to you. This will cause an immediate collision and you or other planes in your flight may lose their wingtips as soon as the game starts. Best to start in the air, or modify the airfield.ini in the terrain folder to space out the planes on the runway. Credits Thanks to Ojcar for making the data file for the Farman F.40 and for making the data for the dummy machine gun. And for helping me with the installation package for FE2. Thanks also to P10ppy who made the Le Prieur rockets, and to Peter01 who made the data for the Lewis Gun. Thanks also to Crowford who provided resources for the Farman cockpits. ----------------------------- Installation Instructions For FE1 - Unzip the file. Move the folder named "FarmanF40" into your FirstEagles/Objects/Aircraft folder. For FE2 - Unzip the file. Move the folder named "FarmanF40" into your FirstEagles/Objects/Aircraft folder. Then in the FirstEagles/Objects/Decals folder, create a new folder named "FarmanF40". Move the folder named "D" from your Aircraft/FarmanF40 folder into the Decals/FarmanF40 folder you just made. You may not need to install the guns or rockets, they have been used on other planes and you may already have them. Instructions for installing the guns and rockets, if you should need them, are in a separate file included in this download. Click here to download this file

The Eastern Front campaigns using the Galicia terrain only use the planes and skins available at Combat Ace. There are only three campaigns so it won't be as immersive an experience as Armchair Aces, but it's something. As for redoing the A-Team planes... don't hold your breath, there are still a lot of other planes that haven't been made yet...
-
I've taken some time out from the Galicia terrain (I really hate doing rivers!) to work on the Farman F.40, a two seat pusher style that was used pretty heavily in 1916. I'm still working on the gunner and haven't even started the skins yet. The gunner is giving me a lot of problems, finding the balance between range of motion, realism, and poly count. When this is finished, I'll do an F.30 for the Russians. Crowford has been helping with info about Russian cockpits and instruments.

Yeah. In First Eagles, the gunner is really part of the gun so he will only Pitch and Yaw with gun - no animation at all. In some of my other planes, the gunner was two pieces so he could elevate without his knees coming through the fuselage - that distorted his torso a bit, but since he was in the gunner's pit you couldn't really see it. This guy sits right in front of the pilot so two pieces isn't an option here. I've got him working fine, but only with severe limits to his field of fire. I keep thinking that I can increase his angles of motion, but I haven't found the solution yet...
-
I'm very close to finishing the plane, I've begun to rough out the skins. But the cockpit still needs some work. I'm still not satisfied with the gunner so I haven't started the cockpit skins yet.

question on installing FE aircraft into FE2
Stephen1918 replied to xeroluck's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
I'm glad you got it working. I really need to understand the difference between FE1 and FE2 better. In my installs of FE1, all the guns in the Weapons folders have MaxRounds set to zero, but they all fire in the game... But if it works... don't change anything! -
question on installing FE aircraft into FE2
Stephen1918 replied to xeroluck's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
Verdun - I am not that familiar with FE2, I use FE1 - Since the gun shows up in the game, you must have it installed in the right place. My angled gun is really an angled version of the "8MM_Schwarzlose_M07/12" You might need to check that that gun is installed in the gun data as well. Can someone who knows more about FE2 Weapons help us out here? -
I have been asked to make a presentation of my planes at a local game developers show. (I will promote First Eagles while I'm at it.) I would like to be able to show high resolution screen shots of my planes in action. I'm looking for a good variety of my planes, over a variety of terrains, "in action" during the game. "Artistic" kinds of shots are good. Other planes can be in the shot, other people's skins can be on my planes. I need to be able to give credit (using your screen name) for who made the screen shot, who made the skin, the terrain, etc. So I don't want to just grab stuff from the other threads. If you have anything to help me, please post it here. I need it in about a week. Thanks.

I want to thank everyone who contributed their screen shots and support to my presentation last night. The event was sponsored by the local chapter of the International Game Developers Association and by the local chapter of ACM SIGGRAPH. It was a week long event, I presented on the last day. It was a pretty good crowd, a lot of them were students. I spent some time showing screen shots of how I build planes in 3D Studio and what goes into getting the plane to work in the game. Then I spent about 20 minutes showing screen shots of the planes in the game. With the slides that were contributed and my own screen shots, I had more than 300 screen shots. There were a lot of questions about First Eagles. At the end I showed a slide with the names of everyone whose work was included and I showed a slide with the URLs for Thirdwire and for CombatAce. I gave credit to: Screen shots by: 33Lima, Quack74, Geezer, StephenM, and Ojcar. Terrains, skies, ground tiles, objects, etc. by: Gepard, Gterl, PanamaRed, JanTuma, Quack74, Wrench, and Geezer. Skins by: Quack 74, Gambit 168, Whiteknight06604, Sinbad, and Geezer And I mentioned that Ojcar has done all the data files for all my planes. My thanks to everyone who helped. Stephen1918

The Nieuport 12 was an improved version of the Nieuport 10. It had a more powerful engine, a larger upper wing and a slightly larger tail plane. These features gave the plane the power and performance to fly as a two man fighter. I have fitted my model with an Etévé gun mount holding a Lewis machine gun in the back, and another Lewis gun on the upper wing for the pilot. I have included three skinning options, identical except for the decals. The Italian Linen uses the Italian insignia and includes the red and green underwing panels. The Russian skin uses the Russian insignia and includes the roundels on the tail planes. The Standard Linen can be used for all the other Entente powers. This plane uses the national markings that come with First Eagles, so you can easily change nationalities (in the Standard Linen skin only.) I have included decals for serial numbers which will be applied randomly. Historical Notes: The numbers are fictious, but in the correct range for most Nieuport 12s. British planes carried the serial number on the fuselage. The Nieuport 12 wasn't used by the Italians, but I included the skin anyway. The Etévé gun mount ring should be flush with the fuselage, but because of limits in the way the game animates objects, I had to raise it up to avoid it intersecting the plane when it moved. Credits: My thanks once again to Ojcar for making the excellent data.INI file for this plane. My thanks to Nix for providing the engine sound file. Thanks also to Nix, Sinbad, Whiteknight06604, and 33Lima who provided suggestions and resources for the Nieuport 12. Version 2 Revised data file by ojcar improves performance and corrects hit box locations for the fuel tanks - corrects muzzle location for rear gun - engine sound added - thanks to Panama Red for testing Installation Instructions: For FE1: Unzip the file and move the folder named "Nieuport12" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Airplanes folder. You also need to move the sound file "clerget9b2m2.wav" into the FirstEagles/Sounds folder. For FE2: Unzip the file and move the folder named "Nieuport12" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Airplanes folder. Then in the FirstEagles/Objects/Decals folder, create a new folder named "Nieuport12". Move the folder named "D" from the Airplanes/Nieuport12 folder into the Decals/Nieuport12 folder you just made. You also need to move the sound file "clerget9b2m2.wav" into the FirstEagles/Sounds folder. -

The Albatros C.III was a general purpose two-seat plane and was based on the C.I and C.II models. An improved tail structure made it more agile than its predecessors and it was produced in large numbers. The plane was armed with a Parabellum machine gun mounted on a pivot in the rear cockpit along with a synchronized machine gun mounted beside the engine. The C.III was used for reconnaissance, aerial photography, and light bombing. The gun ring had limited movement, especially in the vertical direction, which I have tried to reproduce in my model. I have included two loadouts, one for four 12.5 kilo bombs carried internally, and another for six 12.5 kilo bombs carried externally under the wings. I have also included three skinning options - an unpainted standard wood and linen, a light blue paint, and a green paint. All of these are pretty basic so I have included my skinning templates for those who want make their own skins. This plane uses the national markings that come with First Eagles, so you can change nationalities to fly for Bulgaria or the Turks. I have included decals for serial numbers and for personal markings. These will be applied randomly. Some of the personal markings include crosses, I don't know if that would be appropriate if you're flying for the Ottoman Empire. Historical Notes: The serial numbers are fictious, but in the correct range for the 1916 Albatros C.III. The personal markings are completely fictious, but I think reasonable for German markings early in the war. I have not found an example of the Albatros C.III in green paint, but many German planes on the Eastern Front were painted green later in the war, so the color is not unrealistic. If historical accuracy is important to you, you can delete the offending files. Credits: My thanks to Ojcar for making the excellent data.INI file for this plane. My thanks to Nix for making the realistic engine sound file for the Mercedes 6 cylinder engine. Thanks also to Sinbad, Whitekinght06604, and Wrench who provided me with valuable resouces and information for the cockpit details. Installation instructions: For FE1: Unzip the file and move the folder named "AlbatrosC3" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Airplanes folder. You also need to move the sound file "mercedes160m2.wav" into the FirstEagles/Sounds folder. For FE2: Unzip the file and move the folder named "AlbatrosC3" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Airplanes folder. Then in the FirstEagles/Objects/Decals folder, create a new folder named "AlbatrosC3". Move the folder named "D" from the Airplanes/AlbatrosC3 folder into the Decals/AlbatrosC3 folder you just made. You also need to move the sound file "mercedes160m2.wav" into the FirstEagles/Sounds folder. March 12, 2012 - Uploaded a new version with an improved FM by ojcar. -

Note - This is a complete revision with new LODs, new skins, and new hangar and loading screens. I recommend you delete the older version and replace it with this one. The Albatros D.II was identical to the D.I, except that the top wing was mounted lower and farther forward to improve visibility. The fuselage, engine, and guns were the same. Early models had two radiators low on either side of the fuselage, later models had the radiator mounted in the upper wing. I have created both versions of the D.II. I put both radiators on the skins so the same skin can be used for both versions. The download includes two skins, a light camo and a dark camo, and a full set of personal markings for each plane. I have included my skinning templates for those who wish to make different skins. Credits My thanks to Ojcar for making the data file for the Albatros D.II. My thanks also to Nix for making the sound file for the Mercedes 160hp engine. Installation Instructions The two versions can be installed separately or both together. For FE1 - Unzip the file and move the folders named "AlbatrosD2_Early" and "AlbatrosD2_Late" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Aircraft folder. You also need to move the sound file "mercedes160m2.wav" into the FirstEagles/Sounds folder. For FE2 - Unzip the file and move the folders named "AlbatrosD2_Early" and "AlbatrosD2_Late" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Aircraft folder. Then in the FirstEagles/Objects/Decals folder, create new folders named "AlbatrosD2_Early" and "AlbatrosD2_Late". Move the folders named "D" from the Aircraft/AlbatrosD2 folders into the corresponding Decals/AlbatrosD2 folder you just made. You also need to move the sound file "mercedes160m2.wav" into the FirstEagles/Sounds folder. -

The Nieuport 12 was built under license by Beardmore & Co. Ltd. for both the RNAS and the RFC. The Beardmore version differed from the French version in many small ways; the most obvious differences were - a vertical stabilizer at the tail, a slightly longer lower wing, and a different engine cowling. My version has a Lewis Gun mounted on a Scarff Ring for the observer and a Vickers Gun mounted on the fuselage for the pilot. The British built Nieuports had the insignia placed differently from the French versions, my decal ini's are British style. I have included two skins, a brown and linen skin for the RFC, and a dark green skin for the RNAS. There is a set of appropriate serial number decals for each. My skinning templates are included with the download. I have also made British faces for the cockpit instruments. Because of the many minor differences, the skins, cockpit, and data file are not interchangeable with my original Nieuport 12. Credits: My thanks to Ojcar for making the data file for the original N12, I have made slight changes for the Beardmore version. Installation instructions: For FE1: Unzip the file and move the folder named "Nieuport12Beardmore" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Aircraft folder. For FE2: Unzip the file and move the folder named "Nieuport12Beardmore" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Aircraft folder. Then in the FirstEagles/Objects/Decals folder, create a new folder named "Nieuport12Beardmore". Move the folder named "D" from the Airplanes/Nieuport12Beardmore folder into the Decals/Nieuport12Beardmore folder you just made. -
Thank you Ojcar. I like the cloud effects and the flak.

In addition to the British built version, the DH4 was also produced by American manufacturers and was equipped with a Liberty 12 cylinder engine. Although slightly less powerful than the British version, The DH4 Liberty was popular with its crews and was produced in large numbers. After the war, it became the standard general purpose plane for the US Air Service. This upload features the US version, with a new FM by Ojcar. The Liberty engine was slightly heavier than the British version and performance was reduced. To compensate, American DH4s carried a slighty lighter bomb load than the British built planes. I have included a new skin using the number decals that come with First Eagles (which you can set in the loadout screen) and a set of serial numbers which will be applied randomly. There are also loadouts for light, medium, and heavy bomb loads. The skins are rather generic, I have included my skinning templates for those who wish to make better skins. Credits My thanks to Ojcar for making the data file for the DH4 Liberty. My thanks also to Sinbad for providing the motivation and a great deal of resource information for this plane. Installation Instructions For FE1 - Unzip the file and move the folder named "DH4_Liberty" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Airplanes folder. For FE2 - Unzip the file and move the folder named "DH4_Liberty" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Airplanes folder. Then in the FirstEagles/Objects/Decals folder, create a new folder named "DH4_Liberty". Move the folder named "D" from the Airplanes/DH4_Liberty folder into the Decals/DH4_Liberty folder you just made. -

Although best known in its role as a bomber, the Airco DH4 was intended to be a general purpose airplane and was used for recon and ground support as well. Early versions were powered by a 250hp Eagle engine. Later versions were powered with a 375hp Eagle engine, which made them very effective bombers. The biggest problem with the DH4 was the gas tank placed between the pilot and gunner, which made communication between the two almost impossible. I have uploaded two versions of the DH4 - Ojcar has created two FMs for the plane, one with the early 250hp engine, and one with the later 375hp engine. Both planes have two skins, a brown and an olive color. Both use the letter decals that come with First Eagles (which you can set in the loadout screen) and a set of serial numbers which will be applied randomly. There are also loadouts for light, medium, and heavy bomb loads. The skins, decals, and loadouts are interchangeable for the two planes. The skins are rather generic, I have included my skinning templates for those who wish to make better skins. Credits My thanks to Ojcar for once again making two excellent data files for the DH4. My thanks also to Sinbad for providing a great deal of resource information for this plane. Installation Instructions The two versions can be installed separately or both together. For FE1 - Unzip the file and move the folders named "AircoDH4_250" and "AircoDH4_375" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Airplanes folder. For FE2 - Unzip the file and move the folders named "AircoDH4_250" and "AircoDH4_375" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Airplanes folder. Then in the FirstEagles/Objects/Decals folder, create new folders named "AircoDH4_250" and "AircoDH4_375". Move the folders named "D" from the Airplanes/AircoDH4 folders into the corresponding Decals/AircoDH4 folder you just made. -

The Airco DH9 was introduced early in 1918 as an intended replacement for the DH4. The pilot was seated closer to the gunner in the DH9 and an internal bomb compartment was provided. However, because of the DH9's low performance and unreliable engine, the DH4 remained the better bomber until the DH9a was introduced a few months later. Nevertheless, the DH9 did operate with better success on the Eastern and Palestinian fronts where it faced fewer enemy fighters. I have included two skins, a brown and an olive color. Both use the letter decals that come with First Eagles (which you can set in the loadout screen) and I have included a set of serial numbers which will be applied randomly. There are also loadouts for light, medium, and heavy bomb loads. The skins are rather generic, I have included my skinning templates for those who wish to make better skins. Credits My thanks to Ojcar for once again making an excellent data file for the DH9. My thanks also to Sinbad for providing a great deal of resource information for this plane. Installation Instructions For FE1 - Unzip the file and move the folder named "AircoDH9" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Airplanes folder. For FE2 - Unzip the file and move the folder named "AircoDH9" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Airplanes folder. Then in the FirstEagles/Objects/Decals folder, create a new folder named "AircoDH9". Move the folder named "D" from the Airplanes/AircoDH9 folder into the Decals/AircoDH9 folder you just made. April 5, 2012 - Replaced data file with new version to fix problem with take offs and landings and to make the plane fly better. -
Sweet.

I'm finalizing my presentation over the next few days (I present on Friday.) There has been a great response from 33Lima, Quack74, and Geezer. I still have room for more screen shots - I want to include as many people as I can. If anyone else wants to contribute, please post them here, or attach them to a message. Thanks

The LVG C.II was an early German two seater. It had a ring-mounted Parabellum machine gun for the observer, later versions also had a LMG machine gun mounted on the fuselage for the pilot. It was used mostly for reconnaissance, but could also carry a small bomb load. The LVG C.II was the first plane to bomb London, in November 1915. My version has three skins (grey, blue, and linen) and two sets of decals. There are two bomb loadouts, one with four light bombs, another with a single large bomb. I have included my skinning templates with the download. Credits: My thanks to Ojcar for making the data.INI file for this plane and for resources to help with the shape of the fuselage. Installation instructions: For FE1: Unzip the file and move the folder named "LVGC2" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Aircraft folder. For FE2: Unzip the file and move the folder named "LVGC2" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Aircraft folder. Then in the FirstEagles/Objects/Decals folder, create a new folder named "LVGC2". Move the folder named "D" from the Aircraft/LVGC2 folder into the Decals/LVGC2 folder you just made. -
Thanks guys - more is always better! Geezer - with all these great shots (Quack sent me some too) there are going to be socks flying all over the room. 33Lima - even more thanks! I'll use the stock plane shots if I can get them in.

I appreciate all the screen shots, 33Lima and Geezer. Does anybody else have any shots? I could really use about twice as many as this. I would like to show different terrains, different skins and decal sets, even planes on the runway. I'm going to spend about 15 minutes showing how I make a plane and what goes into each plane. Then I hope to have a slide show with a different shot every few seconds for 15 minutes while I talk about First Eagles and the other modders who have contributed to the game. so I need a total of around 150 shots.
