  1. View File Sopwith Triplane - Early The Sopwith Triplane, also known as the "Tripe" or "Tripehound," was introduced at the end of 1916. By mid 1917, several British and French naval squadrons were equipped with the plane. The narrow chord of the three staggered wings gave the pilot an excellent field of view and gave the plane an exceptional rate of climb as well as outstanding agility. The Triplane was considered an exceptional fighter and stayed in service until replaced by the Sopwith Camel in late 1917. Captured Sopwith Triplanes inspired the development of the more famous Fokker Dr.1. The first planes produced had a tail plane nearly identical to the tail of the Sopwith Pup. Early planes also had a 110hp Clerget engine. A smaller tail plane was introduced early in 1917. The engine was also replaced with a more powerful 130hp Clerget engine. This is an early version of the Sopwith Triplane with a wider tail and lower powered engine. It has two skins, one French and one British, with appropriate decals. Note - these skins are NOT interchangeable with the skins for my other Sopwith Triplanes. A fully functional cockpit is included, along with my skinning templates. I have included a sound file for the Clerget engine, but you may already have it. Credits Although he's very busy these days, Ojcar found the time to make the FM for the early Sopwith Triplane. My thanks to him. I have included a sound file for the Clerget engine created by Nixou. It has been used on other planes, so you may already have it. I included it with this download in case you don't. Historical Note The 110 hp Clerget engine was the 9Z. I don't have a sound file for the 9Z so I used a sound for the Clerget 9B instead. Installation Instructions For FE1 - Unzip the file and move the folder named "SopwithTriplane" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Aircraft folder. I have included Nixou's sound for the Clerget engine. It has been used with other planes, so you may already have it. If you don't, copy the file named "clerget9b2m2" from my Sounds folder into your FirstEagles/Sounds folder. For FE2 - Unzip the file and move the folder named "SopwithTriplane" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Aircraft folder. Then in the FirstEagles/Objects/Decals folder, create new folder named "SopwithTriplane". Move the folder named "D" from the Aircraft/SopwithTriplane folder into the Decals/SopwithTriplane folder you just made. I have included Nixou's sound for the Clerget engine. 6. I have uploaded the Sopwith Triplane. Ojcar took the time from his very busy schedule to tweak the FM. I want to thank him for that. The plane has two skins, one for the French and one for the British, with a full set of decals. I spent some time tweaking the cockpit and skins. I also improved the landing gear animations.
  7. Sopwith Triplane Uploaded

Thank you gentlemen. The flight characteristics are due entirely to Ojcar's FM. My planes wouldn't be as nice without his help. I have started on an early tail plane version and a two gun version. There is a surprising amount of work involved for such minor changes. I'll have to change all four LODs for each version, then make new skins. For the two gun version, I'll need to make a new cockpit as well. Ojcar will also have to tweak the FMs. I can't predict how long it will take.

  9. Sopwith Triplane - WIP

The Sopwith Triplane is in the final stages. Ojcar is working on the FM. Meanwhile, I'm finishing the skins, finishing the number decals, making the LODs, and tweaking. I'm also playing around with the landing gear animation, as Quack suggested. I have it working, but I'm ambivalent about the way it looks, I'll keep playing with the numbers.
  10. Sopwith Triplane - WIP

I understand your enthusiasm, guys. However, right now I'm concentrating on getting this one finished. It will have the late tailplane and one gun, which seems to be the most common configuration. After that I'll think about making other versions.
  11. Sopwith Triplane - WIP

I build everything to work well on my computer. I try to keep the file size similar to the size of the stock planes and objects... maybe a little bit bigger. My computer can handle planes with much bigger file sizes. One or two heavy planes work fine, but if they're all heavy planes then I start seeing reduced numbers of enemy planes and slower frame rates. I'm always trying to find a balance between appearance and frame rate. I've gotten better over the years and my planes have gotten more and more detailed. But it always comes down to the question: do I want to look at the plane, or do I want to play the game?
  12. Sopwith Triplane - WIP

I have finished building the Sopwith Triplane. The parts are all unwrapped, the templates are made, and I've started painting the skins. There will be a British and a French skin. I was able to remove some detail from the engine and machine gun so I could add the air pump on the strut. I figured out how to get the FM to make the prop start and stop with the engine. The file size is bigger than I would like, but still acceptable. The cockpit is built, but I still have a lot of work to do on the skins.
  13. Nieuport 24/27 fuel gauges

This looks like it comes from a game site, so I don't know how accurate it is: For the Nieuport 27: "Powertrain: 89-kW HP gasoline engine with 89-kW old prop and 21-gallon standard fuel tank " http://forums.sjgames.com/showthread.php?t=81163
  14. Sopwith Triplane - WIP

I'm trying to bring the file size of the LOD down enough to include the air pump. The pump itself, the mounting bracket, the spinning prop, and the static prop all have to look good from the cockpit view so it adds a lot of K to the file. It looks like not all planes had a pump on the strut, so I won't feel too bad if I can't include it.
  15. The famous World War One Flying Ace comes to First Eagles. Snoopy. perched on his "Sopwith Camel" features an animated scarf, movable head, and a machine gun mounted in the "fuselage." He comes with one skin and a damage decal to show bullet holes when he's hit. There is also a Cockpit View. I only tested him in "Easy" mode. Handling, especially takeoffs and landings, may be hazardous in other modes. Credits Snoopy was created by cartoonist Charles Schulz in 1950. His first appearance as the WWI flying ace was in 1965. Snoopy and the other Peanuts cartoon characters are owned by Peanuts Worldwide LLC. Installation Instructions For both FE and FE2 - Unzip the file and copy the folder named "Snoopy" into your "Objects/Aircraft" folder. FlyableSnoopy.zip
  16. Sopwith Triplane - WIP

Hi Quack, I know you've been wanting a Sopwith Triplane for years. Sorry it took so long for me to get to it. I hope you'll find the time to download it and fly it when it's finished - and maybe make some skins? I've been playing around with animation for the shocks when the plane lands, but I still don't have it running smooth enough yet. Over the years I've figured out how to make more efficient models, so I've been able to add detail to the planes without sacrificing frame rate. For the last two years (at least) I've been able to include damage nodes in my planes. TGAs are something I should try out.
  17. Snoopy for First Eagles

Someone mentioned a Snoopy mod once. I looked for it, but couldn't find it. Maybe it was in Strike Fighters?
  18. First Eagles ScreenshotsThread

I was flying a recon mission in a Rumpler C.I. We had just reached our target when we were jumped by four Nieuports. One got on my wing man's tail but I was able to drive him off. I chased the Nieuport around for a while; I fired at him several times, but never came close to hitting him. Another Nieuport got on my tail; I broke off the chase and started dodging and weaving. My gunner got several shots off and finally brought him down. The Nieuports broke off and we returned to base. I guess I'm better at dodging and weaving than I am at chasing.
  19. Hello?

Anyone still here? I had some health problems over the summer, but I'm recovered. I spent a lot of my down time playing First Eagles, and I've tinkered a little with some mods. I didn't get here very often, but I came around when I could. The activity here has dropped dramatically.
  20. Hello?

Beautiful work. I like the skins. I especially like the menu screens. I hope you'll upload them when they're done. Edit-10/27/20 -- By the way, the Palestine Terrain was begun by Gepard for Strike Fighters. Wrench modified it for First Eagles. I modded Wrench's version (with his permission) and added a lot of ground objects, revised the tiles, and made a lot of changes to the targets - so I can't take full credit for the Palestine terrain.

Hoping to liven things up around here - some screen shots from recent flights. I'd like to see your comments.
  22. Hello?

Thanks everybody. I'm recovered and starting to get back to normal. Ojcar, as a health care worker you're in a challenging situation. I hope you'll continue to stay healthy, my friend. I spent some time flying on the Eastern Front during the past weeks. I really like the way the Sikorsky S-16 looks, but it's under powered and doesn't handle very well. Still sometimes I get lucky, sometimes I don't.
  23. Hello?

I think this has been a hell of a year for everyone. I hope you're able to get back to the Polish map someday, Stratos. I've been looking forward to it. It might also be useful for the Eastern Front. I'm also looking forward to your additions, VonS. Whenever you find the time. There used to be a lot of modders around here. I don't think they've all gone away, I hope we'll see some new mods eventually. I've been playing FE when I have the time (working through Ojcar's Armchair Aces Campaigns.) Whenever I spot something, I'll go into "modder mode" and fix it, so I've made a lot of tweaks to terrains, ground objects, skins, even some aircraft details over the summer. But nothing major - I don't know if it's worth the effort of uploading the changes. Anyone else who is still playing and/or modding: Do you want to share some screenshots?
  24. New Aircraft

VonS (and everyone else involved) thank you for pulling all of this together. The amount of work you did, researching and organizing, must have been phenomenal.

I have made eight tanks and armored cars for the Spanish Civil War. They are equally divided between the factions, with four for each side. Several FT-17 tanks were purchased by Spain after WWI. Some of them were still in service when the Civil War started and were used by both sides. I am using the LODs from the FE Objects.ini. I have made new data files using SCW nations and new skins. The Schneider tank was used in WWI, and a few were purchased by Spain after the war. Only a few were still in service when the Civil War started, and were used by the Republican (government) forces. I have made a new version for SCW with a new data file and skins. The Lancia armored car was also introduced in WWI. Production continued well into the 1920s and it was used by the Italian Army until the beginning of WWII. The Italians provided several to the Nationalist (rebel) forces when the Spanish Civil War began. I have made a new version for SCW with a new data file and skins. The Panzer 1 was a small German tank first introduced in 1934. It has a crew of two and was armed with two machine guns in a turret. More than a hundred of them were provided to the Nationalist forces. Most of them were operated by the Condor Legion (German troops fighting for the Nationalists) but many were operated by Spanish units. The UNL-35 was a Spanish built armored car armed with two machine guns, one in a turret and one in the body. It was used extensively by Republican forces but with a high center of gravity, it did not perform well off-road. Production began in 1937 and continued throughout the war. After the war the UNL-35 served in the Spanish army until the late 1950s. The T-26 was a Soviet tank armed with a 45mm gun. It was probably the best tank used in the Spanish Civil War. A relatively large number were purchased by the Republic during the war. Many of them were captured during the war and used by the Nationalists. I have made a data file and skins for both sides. My data file for the T-26 tank uses the 2 pounder Davis gun which is included in First Eagles. I have also included gun data for the 45mm tank gun which was actually used in the tank. You can install and use it if you wish. Installation Instructions Unzip the file and open my folder named "GroundObject". Copy all the folders to your FirstEagles/Objects/GroundObject folder. All of the tanks and armored cars use the same skin for the destroyed version. Copy the file named "DestroyedArmoredCar.bmp" into your GroundObject folder. Note that the "DestroyedArmoredCar.bmp" file should not be inside any other folder.
