F-8J Crusader coming to DCS
baffmeister replied to MigBuster's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
Streakeagle, I'm curious about the issues your having with the MiG-21. I may eventually get DCS installed and the MiG-21 would be on the shopping list. Are you finding the MiG-21 "glitchy" or is your issue with the plane more FM related. I've seen a few online complaints regarding the FM. -

The CF-100 could dump the tip tank fuel in RL. In game the tanks will be "no-jettison" and I don't know of a way to model the fuel dumping process. -

Just an observation but I think the nose wheel extension system was used only on the CF-5, NF-5 and later F-5E. -

Final testing and packaging has started for an RCAF CF-100 MK-4 Euro version. The plan is to make separate packs for European and North American service. The European Mk-4 pack will have a tight date range from November, 1956, to December, 1962. The Belgian MK-5 will be uploaded later with a historic date range as well. The North American pack will reflect the longer date range for Canadian MK-4/MK-5 service and may include a dedicated ECM version but that's still getting some research. The MK-4 flight manual mentions the capability of carrying four 1000lb bombs. This wasn't done in practice but secondary STRIKE and ANTI_SHIP roles will be included with the primary roles being INTERCEPT and CAP. Air to air rocket tests are continuing and the AI are sometimes completing successful intercept missions against IL-28's but with less success against fighter sized targets. The TU-16 is more or less immune to AI intercepts, although I've seen a few collision course kills by the AI. By collision course I mean ramming! When player flown it might be possible to maneuver the CF-100 formation into a better firing position against the TU-16's prior to "engaging air" but I haven't had any success yet. The external tanks on the CF-100 were "no jettison" although the fuel could be dumped from them over a 2-3 minute period. The performance penalty when carrying external tanks is quite high so they won't be included in the load out ini except for secondary RECON missions. Recon in this case being the guy in back with a camera. [ It's been done before] "What If" load outs will be available for radar and infrared guided missiles but not included in the load out ini. The rocket pods will be carried on intercept missions only as they are almost totally useless against maneuvering fighters. For cap missions the load out will be guns only. Still some research going on but It seems the RCAF versions sent to Europe were all MK-4's with some RCAF numbered MK-5's being flown to Europe but handed over to Belgium on arrival. Any further info on CF-100's in Europe appreciated. -

Unable to upload test files
baffmeister replied to FLOGGER23's topic in Site Support / Bug Reports / Suggestions
I just had some issues uploading a file to a PM as well. The file was quite small, under 4mb but got a message saying "Upload Failed - 200" or something like that. I tried dividing the file in two and one 1.336mb uploaded OK but the other at 1.564mb failed. I ended up dividing the package into 3 files and it worked OK. Using drag and drop or Select File made no difference in my case. -

SF2 Atlas Impala Mk.II by Marcfighters V2
baffmeister replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
Crusader, did you find an actual Mk-2 flight manual somewhere? I found 1341lbs/608.27kg for the two fuselage cells on an Australian Mk-1. Maybe the Mk-2 got an extended tank with the removal of the back seat? Never mind, your linked article explained it in the first paragraph! -

Over the orchards of New Dhimar. [very time consuming todding these tiles] Also checking out a few of gkabs mountain models. They work quite well along rugged coastlines. I used the low res textures from my mountain tiles, changed to jpeg's. -
Battle of the Bulge Campaign
baffmeister replied to Fatman's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Possibly never, but I still think about it. I'm planning on doing some more terrain targeting and adding additional towns to cover the entire area of interest. I'm also considering expanding the target areas to the east of the Rhine and adding some medium sized runways so players will have the option of operating medium bombers. In general, I want to make the terrain more interesting for single missions while keeping the campaign option open. As happens quite often, I got sidetracked by other "interesting things" and ended up with too many half finished projects.- 1 reply

SF2 Atlas Impala Mk.II by Marcfighters V2
baffmeister replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
Still too busy to do anything with this, maybe on the weekend. Some areas I was looking at that need edits were wing area, empty weight, and engine thrust. Not 100% sure which version of the Viper turbojet was used but anecdotal info indicates about 3500lbs ST or about 4000lbs ST, depending on source. More definitive info appreciated. Regarding the pitch up tendency, sometimes I can fix that by editing the H-Stab CL0/CLA tables at the appropriate mach number but it's a hit or miss affair. Will definitely check out all the latest updates prior to proceeding. -

Interesting...............with the present setup the pod disappears when the first rocket is fired. Unfortunately, still haven't got the AI to fire a full salvo although sometimes they fire large salvos. Making the pod a fake rocket that just falls away when fired might be worth a try but it would be a different rocket and I'm not sure how the AI decides which rocket to fire first. Maybe use a closer engagement distance for the fake rocket. Might give it a try. -

Cliff, I should have checked yours first but it seems we tried the same thing. Any idea why the racks cause that issue? -

baffmeister replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
After trying a few more things it seems the issue is very similar to one I had with the Hawker Typhoon. The Typhoon also had some issues with bounding box differences between the left and right sides. With the Typhoon, the wing heaviness varied when using racks to carry bombs or not using racks. I have absolutely no idea how this happens but it is a model issue and there is a "quick fix" for the Impala. Just disable all six racks like so and the issue is much improved: [LeftWingStation01] SystemType=WEAPON_STATION StationID=1 StationGroupID=1 StationType=EXTERNAL AttachmentPosition=-2.40,-0.52,-0.24 AttachmentAngles=0.0,0.0,0.0 LoadLimit=800 AllowedWeaponClass=BOMB,RP,GP AttachmentType=USAF,NATO,UK,FRANCE ModelNodeName=//LeftWingPylon2...................................................DO THIS FOR ALL SIX RACKS PylonMass=25 PylonDragArea=0.03 After the edit the wing heaviness almost totally disappears. I still notice some slight right wing heaviness on departure but it goes away as the speed increases. With the rack edit, the racks are part of the model and will always be visible. I've been doing some flight model edits to this plane over the last 5 days or so and have made some adjustments to the rudder behavior. Also, I found an online flight manual for the Australian MK-1 version so have adjusted fuel weights as well as gear and flap speeds, among other things. Might have a beta test FM ready in a week or so. -

Thanks for the vote of confidence but nothing has worked so far. Some discrepancies noticeable in the bounding boxes when using Mue's lod viewer. The Left vs Right wing racks have some differences that may be an indication of the "offset" model center. From past experience I know it doesn't take much of a difference in weight or distance of external stores to cause a noticeable wing heaviness. In this case the position of the external stores and the rack weights are all symmetrical in the aircraft data.ini so it may be a case of making the weapon positions slightly unsymmetrical to accommodate the model issue. The model error seems to be very small, only about 2-3cm but it's enough to notice. -

Jeanba, is the issue more noticeable when carrying external stores? I've been testing it out and think there may be a model issue, probably an offset center point on the model. -
The building objects you made for the Battle of the Bulge terrain looked good to my eye. I did run them through the lod viewer and didn't see any issues. Some 63% sized objects got used for other purposes, I think an old hangar used as a shed or whatever. I will package those objects eventually.

That's the whole idea, I think. They aren't used to make forests but just to add some additional visual interest to certain target areas. -

There are some tree models available but they aren't always easy to find. No formal "tree objects" have been uploaded, to the best of my knowledge. Here are some I found included with some terrains. Fir tree groupings found on Rends Germany terrain, and probably others. I re-colored the base for winter use and used it in the Battle of the Bulge terrain: Here are some palm trees that may use the same lod as the fir trees but with a different tga: Both those screen shots show 3 individual tree objects as well. Not sure where I got them but they are flat objects so to get a 3d look you have to place them in an X pattern. I think having some tree objects, both individual and in groups is a good idea. I don't know anything about model building but it might be possible to make tree objects with different tga's that would match different climates, giving the terrain builder a choice of various tree types. -
I just did a similar test to what Mue did but using the stock ThirdWire SE-5 aircraft. My not very exact measurement using the lod viewer cursor gave a wingspan of 7.8 meters for the SE-5 model compared to a wingspan of 8.11 meters from Wikipedia. That's very close so I wonder, if the tank and the plane are more or less the correct size, then what objects are at 63%?
