SF2: North Atlantic
column5 replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Knowledge Base
What I mean is that if we follow that reasoning then only people with a significant amount of direct, hands-on experience flying, maintainiing, designing, etc., aircraft would be qualified to reproduce them for video games. :) To approach it from a different angle, PFunk's opinion is no different from that of a movie reviewer--you have to have some experience with a film critic's history and tastes before you can trust their opinion on how to spend your entertainment bucks (or quid), but the vast majority of them are neither filmmakers nor actors yet they compare movie A to movie B all the time. -

If we go down that route then only a handful of people on this forum should be making mods at all... And of course there is the risk of drawing a non-sequitur conclusion--just because someone is a pilot does not guarantee that a statement they make about aviation is correct. HOWEVAR LOOTENANT PEETE MITCHALL IS ALWAY CORRECT ABOUT F14S TOMCATS!!!!!!!!!111 -

SF2: North Atlantic

Fair point, but I think that a reviewer's main goal should be to give the reader the information necessary to determine if a product is worth the money. In this case I think that comparing TKs model to ours was a good way for PFunk to convey to the reader his opinion of the ThirdWire model, because many of his readers will have had first hand experience with the TMF version. -

Don't shoot the messenger--the release is buggy. It is still a mystery why TK cut his beta testers loose...we used to spend hundreds of hours testing his games for free and I feel confident that all of the bugs seen in SF2NA at launch would have been found and reported. Also, thanks to PFunk for his kind words on the Mirage Factory F-14. -

I never understood why Swede wouldn't let us release that. -

The parked aircraft have unique aircraft number decals, so probably not part of the ship model. -

I don't think I've ever mentioned this to anyone except BLTDAN... Back when TK worked with Destineer to make WoE, I and several others here were on the official beta test team. This was more formal than TKs normal beta tests were, in that we used a web based bug-tracking tool. Anyway, one of the producers at Destineer saw my old website and contacted me via email, which resulted in us talking on the phone a couple of times. He was really fired up that the games had such a following, and was impressed with the work that the modders had done to the point where he wanted to either include some community work in the game, or possibly have a selection of official community mods available on their website. This never went beyond a couple of conversations, and I was clear with him that we in the community didn't want to step on TKs toes or get in his way. It makes me wonder what would have happened if TK had taken a different approach back then when he had an actual publisher and his games were in stores. -
Wot TK thinging with this iPad business?
column5 replied to crl848's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I remember emailing him back in the 2003-2004 timeframe asking if he would be willing to do an interview and answer some questions. I told him we wouldn't ask anything that was related to the sales side of the business and that he could skip any questions he didn't want to answer. Flatly refused. He talks about low sales but does no marketing and no outreach to potential customers. Apparantly, if you build it they DON'T magically come...damn you Kevin Costner. -
Wot TK thinging with this iPad business?
column5 replied to crl848's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I can't think of any game TK could produce for the iPhone or iPad that I would buy. Certainly not a flying game of any sort. I also can't fathom how that mission editor could have taken so much effort to produce that it almost broke the company--that doesn't pass my internal reasonableness test. -

Yeah the last fleet A-4 squadrons were decommed in 1975. Should be easy to create a backdated campaign though with Oriskany on its final cruise Nov '74 to May '75. It was a WESTPAC, but who cares? -
How to stop planes from ridiculous pulling up at take off?
column5 replied to Kodiak's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Been a while sine I thought about flight models, but you might want to check the Xac tables for the horizontal stabs: XacMachTableNumData=7 XacMachTableDeltaX=0.40 XacMachTableStartX=0.00 XacMachTableData=-7.160,-7.168,-7.188,-7.599,-7.766,-7.866,-7.955 (The above is just for illustration, those values won't work for the Seahawk) If the Xac is being placed too far back, it could be greatly amplifying the pitching moment of the elevators, leading to calamity. -
