Good news Dave. Its best for everyone, including them, that they go down their own fork in the road. -

It was an F-8. Remember, the A-7 was not even on the drawing board during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It did not enter service until about 1967. -
Airspeed in the Thirdwire games
column5 replied to Rambler 1-1's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
This issue of speed came up in a heated maelstrom yesterday so I'll try to answer your questions. First thing is to know the difference between Indicated (or Calibrated) Airspeed and True Airspeed. From Wikipedia: Indicated Airspeed True Airspeed I can't give you the mathematical part of it, but in really really simple terms (that even I can understand), the higher you fly, the more IAS and TAS will diverge because airspeed is detected by a pressure sensitive instrument, and the higher you fly, the lower the air pressure. So, let's say you are cruising in an F11F Tiger at 350 knots IAS at 10,000 feet. Your true airspeed is going to be about 440 knots. Here is a quick tool to help you convert between IAS and TAS at various altitudes: http://www.paragonair.com/public/aircraft/calc_TAS.html The question you asked, does the A-7 cruise faster than the F-4, is complicated. Assuming that you choose a cruise speed for best fuel economy at a particular aircraft weight and altitude, there may be circumstances where the A-7 would actually crusie faster, even though it is a slower overall aircraft. Here is a chart from the F11F pilots manual showing recommended cruise speeds in clean configuration at 10,000 ft. Note that the recommended cruise speeds range from 300-350 knots IAS, or 350-400 knots TAS. This is at odds with what most websites will tell you the cruise speed for this aircraft is, because most websites don't have detailed technical info and don't take into account the information I've outlined above. You really need a -1 to get the good info. To address the A-7 specifically, since I did that flight model, I almost certainly have it too high for a couple of reasoins. First, I was less experienced when I did that FM, and second, the game changed recently so that the engine thakes the value for CruiseSpeed and treats it as the target IAS rather than TAS. It used to aim for the CruiseSpeed as the target TAS, so planes that have not been updated for WOI/SP5 are going to tend to cruise faster than they ought to. Rest assured that the flight models I have been involved with will be updated. Based on the above, you should be able to work out the anser to the question about Mach 2 versus 800 knots IAS... I hope this helps! -

F-111 question
column5 replied to Atreides's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Here is the link to his whole "American Military Aircraft" site: http://home.att.net/~jbaugher/uscombataircraft.html Joe is the only source I trust on the Internet. For anything else, I go to books. ;) EDIT: Forgot, I trust the Air Vectors site as well: http://www.vectorsite.net/indexav.html -
F-111 question

If you want some details on the various models, Joe Baugher's articles give a good overview: http://home.att.net/~jbaugher1/f111.html -
Here is another one: http://www.youthink.com/quiz.cfm?action=go...&obj_id=983 This one says I am an A-10: You are an A-10. You may not be the prettiest or swiftest, but you`re tough as nails, and everyone knows not to mess with you!

The KB obsession
column5 replied to Crusader's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I have said before that people who will not first search for answers to their question are being disrespectful to the rest of the community. They want someone to stop and take time to give them a custom answer when the information they need is very often already posted in the KB or available through a search. I don't know why there is such resistance to searching first, and asking questions later. I know that when I have a question about anything, be it a flight sim or a car question or whatever, I go to websites and search first, before I post a question. Its common sense to realize that most problems are not unique, and that any problem is likely to have been encountered by someone else before you. So I have to respectfully disagree with MJ on this issue. It is not unreasonable to expect people to search the site and use the KB before posting questions. That said, I don't care for the new KB layout...it doesn't lead one intuitively to the right section for specific questions. -
I wonder if stiglr was attached to my leg, if I could use some Asshat-Repellant Bat Spray on him?

Don't know about Vista but the games run great under XP Pro x64.

Beta: F9F-8 Cougar updated for WOI/SP5
column5 posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
This is Pasko's F9F-8 updated for WOI/SP5. When I started updating this one, I realized that we had done a pretty bad job on the original release...in all areas, including model, FM and skins. So I have completely overhaled the FM...it should be nice to fly now. I also replaced the original skins with the ones from Volk's Courgar skin pack. There are a couple of known problems with the model that I cannot fix, including the left main gear door being in the wrong position when open, and some decal bleed on the nose--these are relatively minor, though. As usual, let me know of any major problems. http://www.column5.us/beta/F-9J.7z -
Beta: J-35F for WOI/Patch 5

This is the J-35F Draken updated for WOI/Patch 5. If anyone with WOI wants to test and post feedback, it would be appreciated. http://www.column5.us/beta/J35F_Draken_2.0.7z Known issues: 1. The screens are designed for the earlier games. This will not be changed. 2. I've simplified the loadout to use NATO designations for missiles instead of Swedish. -
