Lofted weapons
Lexx_Luthor replied to Wraith27's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Crusader says FOV limits loft angle. So setup a radar unit with very long range detection/track/lock, no missiles -- just a radar emitting target -- set Skybolt seeker FOV very wide, so the loft can be very high. Then an even AI B-58 can "loft" a Skybolt hundreds of km right? That would be enough for me to get the WoI. -
Astra BVRAAM & R-510
Lexx_Luthor replied to lindr2's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I never knew about these R.510 and R.511. Very interesting stuff. So they are manually guided, by radio command? Yikes! -
SeaCat Missiles
Lexx_Luthor replied to marianoranchos's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Would doubling up ship models on top of each other allow two missile systems? Say an Exocet armed ship, and a Seacat armed ship, everything the same, with identical waypoints, except different missiles. AI vs AI collisions don't happen. Don't think it could work in the closed dynamic campaign system though, only hand crafted missions, or maybe a new formation could be made for this. -
Issues with Nuke
Lexx_Luthor replied to StarBucker's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
You can study the effects and add to them. I thought of making burning landscape with lots of fires around, But I ran out of emitters (16 max) in larger yields, so I let it go for now. It would look bad on hilly terrain also. I also figured it may be better as ground target damage effect -- assuming the target area has lots of objects that are destroyed and burning together over a wide area. A mass formation of conventionally armed bombers should do the same thing over a wide ground area. You don't want to drop a 100lb bomblet and have the entire terrain tile burning though. -
R-511
Lexx_Luthor replied to lindr2's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Wow, nice job, very interesting expriment. In the old Su-27 FLAKER 1.0 from 1995, you could target air-surface missiles with either guns or your AAMs. However, the AI planes could not do this. Still that was alot of fun. I used to setup a formation of Tu-95's all launching multiple Kh-55s, and taking all these missiles out with R-73s and cannon was alot of fun. Most interesting experiment of all >> I setup a low flying Tu-22M (non flyable) to fire a Kh-15 at a ground target far away. The Kh-15 fired off into the sky, higher and faster. I had an enemy Slava cruiser nearby, just in front of the Tu-22, and the ship engaged the Kh-15 flying away from it. The Slava fired an S-300 and the SAM caught and destroyed the Kh-15. I thought that was amazing. But the developers never fully explored this, so missile vs missile combat was not overall practical. -
Read all thread titles in the current context, in top/down order, and think about it. It all ties together quite nicely.

Issues with Nuke
Lexx_Luthor replied to StarBucker's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Nuc craters are not very large, especially for large yields. The big craters seen in Pacific tests were made in porous coral. Don't go by that. -
lindr K-9 and R-4 --- slipped under our radar
Lexx_Luthor posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
THANKS LINDR It took a few days, but I found something hiding in lindr's stuff. Czech it out... (1) My mutant mold of Insky's J-8 into MiG Ye-152A, now with lindr's K-9 missiles. (2) My mutant mold of Insky's J-8 into MiG Ye-152M, now with lindr's R-4 missiles...I have both IR and SARH as first look but the real thing used SARH only. The wingtip launch could never be made to work well, and the designers were going to go back to normal underwing mounting, but the program was cancelled in favour of expected MiG-25. -
lindr K-9 and R-4 --- slipped under our radar
Lexx_Luthor replied to Lexx_Luthor's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I don't know what those are. Could be 4 wingtip tracers. R-4 seems to have had two tracers on the rear fuselage, and only one (1) large rocket nozzle at the rear. The film makers might have used other footage here. I know the K-5 series had 4 tracers -- one on each wingtip. That may have been used for this video, or something else. Not sure about this. The flickering during launch is strange. What is that? Very nice video however, thanks! If I recall, the missiles could be fired any way desired, all IR included. Standard practice was one IR followed by one SARH. If the target needed destroying, and no radar lock was possible, then its IR only. This would be a good example. -
Lofted weapons
Lexx_Luthor replied to Wraith27's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I don't have the WoI, but past discussions hint to me this "loft" is for air-air missiles only, to extend range. If air-surface missiles can have a "loft," then a Skybolt might work on a large map, and this game would be an Awsim! -
MIG 25 SPEED
Lexx_Luthor replied to FLOGGER23's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Blast effects are poor at high altitude. But, shrapnel can travel very far very fast up there. If that S-75 detonation happened several thousand feet below the A-12, by the time that piece of shrapnel got up there, slowing down from dragg and gravity, the A-12 was possibly moving faster and flew into it, like a bird strike. If the Ussians did not allow SR-71s over Russian lands, it might have been because of the existence of nuclular armed SAMs. That's just a guess, but one that makes some sense for now. MiGbuster:: After the F-14, the best potential tactical frontline fighter for all out warfare in the first Ussian/Iraq War was MiG-25, assuming everything else equal (military budget, electronic warfare, numbers in the air, etc...). For me, the late Cold War retreat to "samauri" Turn-and-Boyd dogfighting at slow speeds WW2 Japanese style meant the end of military aviation, and coincides with the retreat of public interest in military aviation since the 1960s, that and the various limited hot wars tarnished previously shiny war machines of all nations. -

Lexx_Luthor replied to Lexx_Luthor's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Wow, YOU just made me think of something. Classical air defense practice worldwide was lob IR followed by SARH about a second or two later. -152M had SARH only, so maybe the idea was to fire both missiles at the same time -- same guidance same lockon etc... So it would work here. I had been thinking of the ripple fire, not simultaneous fire. Thanks for that push! Say one missile hangs up or something. -
1992 Is Just About The Newest Campaign Date You Want Isn't It?
Lexx_Luthor replied to a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mission/Campaign Building Discussion
Gocad:: There is another, many others, but one is.... When I got The StrikeFighters, my first real dogfight game "test" was flying Su-7 against <CENSORED too newbishly embarassing>. I was that Newbish, needing something with afterburner. Well, I couldn't have my afterburner like I was used to in the All Digital All In Wonder superHUDjetMFDsims. My Su-7 gave me about 5 minutes flying time in afterburner, this at low level, so I had to fight without burner except when absolutely needed. This surprised me, and it should not have, as I knew about Su-7, but I simply have NEVER seen anything like this in The Sims before. Well done! Classic crapp jets make you manage fuel, like no aircraft before and no aircraft after, Luftwaffe rocket planes in WW2 The Sims excepted. I've read that there's a saying that Lightning pilots never ran out of fuel when driving the English countryside, as they were habitually looking at their gas guage the whole time. -

Lexx_Luthor replied to Lexx_Luthor's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Too bad about the wingtip rails. Its looks sharp. On the other hand, firing one missile causes a "problem" -- you get so unbalanced with one missile, and these are heavy rockets. I've read one Yak-28 crew tested high mach stability with only one R-8, and at some point during acceleration to higher air speeds, the Yak disintegrated, killing the crew. -

It works out well. Nice big single rear engine made from -17PF radar noses (by Madcattie?), and now R-4 missiles. I use Mirage Factory's MiG-21PF cockpit. -

AGM-28 repaint & SA-1 Beta
Lexx_Luthor replied to lindr2's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Not 100% in this sim. I can do roughly 60 degree facing azimuth and 60 degree vertical, maybe a bit more. (1) Set launcher Max/Min yaw the same, but face launcher to desired direction. (2) Set launcher Max/Min pitch range the same, but give launcher a "compromise" default pitch -- it won't be pure vertical launch. I use 70 degrees now. (3) Set seeker field of view very wide to cover 60 degrees AND play with pitch range to get best result. I use 110 degrees now with 70 degree launch pitch, but this needs MUCH more experiment. As FastCargo notes, there are other variables that can help restrict the missile's tracking ability. Its very rough approximation. But it works! When I get back to experimenting with SAMs, I'll get more into it. I may wait for next Patch, or get the WoI. Does WoI have a flyable Hunter, or is that just WoE? -

Right. MiG-12.5, half the engines, half the missiles, half the radar. What exactly happened to K-9? -

AGM-28 repaint & SA-1 Beta
Lexx_Luthor replied to lindr2's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
S-25 radar was directional, about 60 degrees I think. I have made a basic S-25 unit by using S-75 missile for model. What I do is slant the launcher somewhat, and fix the direction of facing. It does not launch pure vertical, but it is directional, and that's the main thing. lindr thanks for all this. In the last 2 weeks, you have added so much to classical strategic air warfare which has never been done in The Sims until SF's 3rd Party modders. -
