Task Force position for Israel based campaigns.
saisran replied to saisran's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Thank's Arthur. ill use them coordinates for a second carrier group. or when i decide to use the orignal water.bmp. I actually got them working by something so silly i cant begin to think why i didnt just did it in the first place. Make the green water much, much bigger. :) -

yup. I downloaded the water.bmp packs. they work well in missions. just that i can't seem to get them to work on campaigns. I worked the first time but i found my group too close to the enemy bases and moved it back. I forgot to save the coordinates and now i can't seem to get it working... -

That is so unfair! When Caesar does his guns only it all seems so easy. I on the other hand had to force a scissors just to get the faggot in front of my F-9J. Did a strike mission solo as i'm running low on wingmen. The Iron on target was rather uneventful but on trip back i found myself being shot a Mig-15. Turned a one circle which ended up with me fruitlessly wasting energy which put me short of a half loop. The Mig was right in my tail sending cannon rounds up my tail. The cougar just takes too long to build energy departs easily if i turn lower than 130kts. I was were flying at about 2000ft at speeds of 200-300ish. it took about six or more reversals finally hit the airbrakes, rool to my right and pulled. the mig passed underneath and ended up slightly infront. rolled again in the other diretion retract brakes. drop flaps and pulled. Finger hard on the trigger as the mig passed in front sending sparks and smoke up my wind shield, my bullets shredding the Mig. yeah i pulled it off but that ain't easy. The reversal leading to the Mig's demise... -

TF-9J Cougar vs. Mig-17 Fresco an entire swarm of them! A routine mission in a routine campaign. Went deep into commie territory and sent a couple of rockets to their Fuel Depot. Well the commies didn't like me blowing up their fuel reserves. Mission completed and flying happily en route home. my wingman suddenly screamed. He just got shot down by a Fresco. Engine on full dove to the deck as tracers streams past. Quick map vie to check how many there are. 4 Migs directly on my tail and several other broke course and heads toward my six. This is no time for fighting Mig's as i dont think my Cougar can take on several squadrons on it's own. so i ran... ran for an hour... And some... I ran for how many miles i couldn't tell as i was busy trimming grass, breaking left, breaking right. trying desperately to put distance from my self and the closest of the faster Mig. Just like a pack of wolves as one looses energy trying for a gun kill and climbing up to avoid hitting the ground. another Mig takes his position. Should i try to get on the offensive? nope the Cougar ain't really handles well for dog fight. So i ran hoping to ran into friendlies while Control keeps denying help.. Fortunately The cougar has a better mileage one by one the migs break pursuit and heads back. debug view shows they're running empty. Still have 1k worth of fuel, more than enough for the Cougar. So i lined up one of the Damn Fresco and pulled the trigger.... Guns jammed. There they are my pursuers who tormented me for about two hours flying slow and straight and here i was eye on the piper and can't do nothing. -

well according to Grumman Engineer's(I wan't an F-14, Tomcat Sunset or MATS). The tomcat's airframe can take more than 11G's. Navy rated it to 6.5, they say to improve meantime Protect electronics and something. i think it's so that Air force big wigs wont get jealous of the new plane.). About the F-15 Flying on one wing It's basically flew like an F-4. A huge engine with a cockpit. The plane ain't doing maneuvers and were just flying straight and fast. kept stable by the twin vert tail. I any case the argument about how fuel, flaps, pancake and tunnel layout improving the Tomcats ability against other fighters won't end. Either way Me and my tomcat may or may not be the best circus performer in the air but one thing i'm sure Compare to the other teen series. It's by far the most beautiful. Far prettier than Cyrano de bergerac nosed eagle. or the half plane viper or the collection of parts which is the Hornet. Only the blind and those lacking in aesthetic sense can argue this point. 2x F14B with 4x AIM-54CE 2x AIM-7N 2x AIM-9M vs 2X F-15C 2X F-16Cblk32 2x FA-18F all long range load. AIM-120 is limited to AIM-120C-5 as i dont have the D model. Anyways the D weren't around during the tomcats time. The Superior radar on the Tomcat coupled with my Altitude advantage meant that picking up the Eagle from 80nm was a piece of cake. A few jabs on the Jammer is enough to make the Tomcat invisible on the Eagle's radar. Wingie my boy waste them. Nice Job wingie. Death! A huge Fireball that tiny speck out there... that's death staring you at the face... Boom!!! t A few moments later RWR rang out im being painted. Set radar to range and activate jamming for a short burst to avoid tracking. Picked out both vipers and hornet. Got a good lock on the Vipers. Set to multiple engagement mode. Fox 3 all 4 in succession. Lead Viper and hornet was reduced to ash. but both number two escaped Went for much closer viper and sent wingie over to the Bug. The viper succumbed to a sparrow and died. the Hornet to sheer Game engine cheating. manages to evade 2 sparrows fired at It while not doing any evasive managed to send all of his AIM-120 in my direction. unfortunate for im all his missile missed and he forget wingie is after him. -

Well, TMF's F-14B/D is one of the best modelled planes out there. fly and handles like it should. The thing with the turkey, people always base its stats on the A which has the TF-30 engine and/or carrying a full payload. (According to a Grummanite from another site) When the Navy commissioned Grumman for a replacement for the F-111 interceptor. They designed a fighter first, then gave it the interceptor ability then they figured out a way to mate it with the AIM-54. So first and foremost the Airframe design is a capable fighter capable of mixing it out with anything out there in close quarters. And with the GE engine it has the thrust to push that huge lifting body around. So is the F-14B/D performance realistic? I think so! In the end it all boils down to the pilot's preference. I prefer the Consistent and Direct roll and pitch of the Tom rather than the abrupt responses of the Viper and other aircrafts. The stability of the tomcat is confidence inducing as you're the one controlling the plane not it controlling you. Anyway, Tried another low level flight taking the heaters inside the BVR range. Me:F-8J 4x AIM-9X (let's give the sader some teeth shall we?) Opponent: EF-2000 4x Meteor 4x ASRAAM or Iris-T Finding the Typhoon proved to be difficult. (next time im adjusting the waypoints.) Was forced to move inland into AAA and SAM country as ive burned almost half my fuel waiting for the Typhoon to come to me. The undulating terrain proved to be more difficult to hide in as you're forced to climbed up for time to time to avoid ramming into the ground. This guy managed to fire all his Meteor. Thankfully i managed to avoid all of them by almost crashing Dangerously low and real slow as the EuroFighter sent another Meteor as a greeting Figured he missed all his shots already. AIM-9X such an early lock asking to be released for a face shooter Waited till 8nm and fired all my winders in interval. -

This is a tactic i found useful against interceptors with long range AAM after i ran out of Phoenix missiles sending Bombers into the Atlantic. Fancy tactics and running away really isn't my thing. Opposition: F-15SE Air to Air longrange loadout unknown. Me F-8J AIM-9B. I opted not to take the tomcat so that i don't get tempting shooting the silent eagle down from BVR. It takes a good steady hand and good instrumentation to fly this trick. Fly low below 200ft going at speeds where your craft is most stable. I Found that 580kts is the best for the F-8J. In game regardless of the flatness of the sea as long as you're flying below 200kts Radar ain't gonna be able to pick you up. And in this case i manage to meet the Highly modern silent eagle and get behind him in my 1960's F-8 without him even knowing i'm there. This trick is quite easy to pull off in the TMF's tomcat as it has Alt info on the HUD. Getting closer keeping the alt below 200. No radar and no ECM. totally silent 10nm were practically shoulder to shoulder and i start to slowly move behind the Eagle. Got too far behind when the eagle decided to open up the taps a bit and fly above mach 1 Perfect position and still undetected. Fired off all the AIM-9B and as expected none of them hit. The fight ended up with me running out of fuel. After i fired the all my winders the eagle decided to haul ass and run. Took all my fuel trying to catch up for a gun kill. But still i prove what i intended. Even against an AIM-54CE laden Tomcat or AIM-120D laden hornet, eagle or whatever. Flying just above the ground will get you safely across. in some instances the AIM54CE can get a lock when the Platform is flying below 1000ft himself. in this case flying at 50ft breaks the lock though thats too tight of a squeeze. Still i prefer this tactic as its quicker. -

AWG-9 problems in SF2
saisran replied to morteza1374's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Also Fighter sized object are also harder to lock. especially models with "RCS=XXX" values in the Data.ini(stealth). Bombers on the other hand. i can lock them up from 150nm. Just like he said. Fly higher than the target. especially against TU-22's. If the target is flying low get lower and point your nose up to avoid ground clutter. TMF's radar/HUD. provides information on targets heading, altutide and speed of your target just by inserting the target in the bracket. get a bead on it and position yourself for the best intercept course. -
AWG-9 problems in SF2
saisran replied to morteza1374's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
I found that in SF2 there's a lot of things the radar has to consider before acquiring a lock. like jamming, cloud cover, ground clutter positioning, etc. try moving your nose up and down, higher or lower than the target. also select the least range possible. I.e if the target is 80nm out select 100nm radar range instead of 230nm. not sure if there's a way to give the plane to track and lock from anywhere or any place at any conditions. try asking the TMF Tomcat crew. -

Formula for estimating missile performance
saisran posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I found some really cool stuff about math and missiles wonder how can i use it to correct the missile performance in SF2? those ASM are flying at Mach 11!!! Subject: A simple formula for estimating missile performance. dwightlooi 3/15/2008 10:28:12 PM I want to take this opportunity to introduce everyone to a very simple formula that can be used for estimating the performance of a missile. It goes like this:- Change in Velocity (Delta V) = 10 x Specific Impulse x LN (initial weight / final weight) m/s This assumes that all the fuel is used to get the missile as fast as possible and none is used to provide just enough thrust to sustain a given velocity. In otherwords, it assumes an all-boost motor not a boost sustain motor. For example, let'a take a look at the AIM-120A AMRAAM which we have some decent info on... Launch weight = 335 lbs (Published stats) Motor weight = 156 lbs (WPU-6/B HTPB rocket motor weight as per Raytheon) Approximate specific impulse = 245 seconds (typical of HTPB solid motors) Approximate fuel fraction of motor = 85% (typical of robust aluminum cased aerospace rocket motors) OK... if 85% of the motor's mass is the fuel, we have about 132 lbs of fuel in the AMRAAM-A -- roughly a 39.4% fuel fraction (sounds about right). So let's run the numbers... Delta V = 10 x 245 x LN(335/(335-132)) = 1227 m/s The formula predicts that the AMRAAM will go about 1227 m/s (~Mach 3.7) faster than it started. If it is launched at say Mach 1.5 it'll be going Mach 5.2. In reality the AMRAAM doesn't go that fast. The reason is that not all the fuel is used to get it as fast as possible. The AMRAAM's motor is a boost-sustain design. It is probably grained to take the weapon to abut Mach 2.5~2.8 faster than it started at (Mach 4+ in a typical Mach 1.5 release). The rest of the fuel is shaped to burn much more slowly to keep it's velocity at or near the achieved maximum out to a longer range before the motor burns out. Well, for any given fuel fraction and specific impulse, a designer can decide how fast he wants to go and how long he wants to stay at or near the peak velocity achieved. For instance, if a missile carries 40% of its launch weight as fuel and uses the typical a modern HTPB propellant motor, it can:- (1) Spend 25% to get an approximate Mach 2.1 delta V and 15% on sustaining that speed for a relatively long while. (2) Spend 30% to get an approximate Mach 2.7 delta V and 10% on sustaining that speed for a shorter while. (3) Spend 40% to get an approximate Mach 3.8 delta V have no sustain burn time at all. BTW, in reference to the above comment on deceleration... it doesn't really work that way. If a missle starts at Mach 4 at burn out and decelerates 25% to Mach 3 after 10~15 seconds, it WILL NOT decelerate to Mach 2 (another 33% from Mach 3) after 20~30 seconds. This is impossible because aerodynamic drag (Fd = Cd x A x 0.5 x P x V^2) is a function of the square of velocity. As velocity decreases, drag force decreases exponentially in relation to it. Hence, if the drag for at Mach 4 causes a 25% loss in velocity in 10~15 seconds, there is no way a much lower drag force at Mach 3 will cause a 33% loss in velocity after another 10~15 seconds. What happens is that deceleration is non-linear; you start off steep and the slope flattens out over time as velocity and hence drag drops. It'll take a missile a heck of a lot longer to decelerate from Mach 4 to Mach 2 compared to say Mach 2 to Mach 1 for instance. Actually it also depends a heck of a lot on altitude (air density)... Let's plug some numbers shall we? Question: How much thrust is needed to sustain Mach 3.0 in an AAM like the AMRAAM? Drag force (Newtons) = 0.5 x P x V^2 x Cd x A P = Density of Air (kg/m^3) ; ~1.29 kg/m^3 @ sea level; ~0.232 kg/m^3 @ 12,000 m V = Velocity (m/s) ; Mach 1 = 340 m/s @ sea level; ~295 m/s @ 12,000 m Cd = Co-efficient of Drag ; ~ 0.6 to 0.95 for rockets depending mostly on finnage, nose and tail profile A = Sectional Area (m^2) ; ~ 0.025 m^2 for a 7" diameter missile. For an AMRAAM like AAM going at high altitudes (40,000 ft)... Drag Force @ Mach 3 = 0.5 x 0.232 x (295x3)^2 x 0.70 x 0.025 = 1590 Newtons = 357 lbs Drag Force @ Mach 2 = 0.5 x 0.232 x (295x2)^2 x 0.70 x 0.025 = 707 Newtons = 159 lbs Drag Force @ Mach 1 = 0.5 x 0.232 x 295^2 x 0.70 x 0.025 = 177 Newtons = 39.8 lbs The same missile going Mach 3 at Sea Level... Drag Force @ Mach 3 = 0.5 x 1.29 x (340x3)^2 x 0.70 x 0.025 = 11,744 Newtons = 2640 lbs Drag Force @ Mach 2 = 0.5 x 1.29 x (340x2)^2 x 0.70 x 0.025 = 5,219 Newtons = 1173 lbs Drag Force @ Mach 1 = 0.5 x 1.29 x 340^2 x 0.70 x 0.025 = 1,305 Newtons = 293 lbs Assuming that there is no sustainer, the deceleration experienced at Mach 3 by the 203 lbs (empty) missile is Deceleration @ Mach 3 = -F / mass = -1590 / (203 x 0.454) = -17.3 m/s^2 = - Mach 0.059/sec @ 40,000 ft Deceleration @ Mach 2 = -F / mass = -707 / (203 x 0.454) = -7.67 m/s^2 = - Mach 0.026/sec @ 40,000 ft Deceleration @ Mach 1 = -F / mass = -177 / (203 x 0.454) = -1.92 m/s^2 = - Mach 0.0065/sec @ 40,000 ft Deceleration @ Mach 3 = -F / mass = -11744 / (203 x 0.454) = -127 m/s^2 = - Mach 0.39/sec @ sea level Deceleration @ Mach 2 = -F / mass = -5219 / (203 x 0.454) = -56.6 m/s^2 = - Mach 0.17/sec @ sea level Deceleration @ Mach 1 = -F / mass = -1305 / (203 x 0.454) = -14.2 m/s^2 = - Mach 0.042/sec @ sea level OK... enough of the math and the formulas... what does all these mean? Well, it means that while coasting at Mach 3 an AAM is going to lose about less than 2% of its velocity a second at high altitudes while it stands to lose about 13% of its velocity at sea level! Huge difference isn't it? Remember though that the rate of deceleration actually DECREASES as the missile's velocity decreases. It is easy to see that one can claim that a missile can burn out burn out its booster and sustainer and be effective out to over 100 km at high altitudes or be useful only against helos after 10km on the deck! Also, we can make a pretty educated guess as to how much thrust the sustainer has to make. An AMRAAM class missile with a 400 lbs sustain thrust will be able to stay above Mach 3 at high altitudes and stay about Mach 1.2 at sea level. An AMRAAM class missile carrying about 10% of its launch weight as sustainer grained propellant will be able to keep this level of thrust lit for 20.5 seconds in addition to whatever the boost time was using the 30% of its fuel to get a roughly Mach 2.7 Delta V after launch. A missile like this when fired at Mach 1.5 will reach Mach 4+ and keep above Mach 3 for the duration of the sustainer at high altitudes. It will also reach about Mach 2.5 and keep above about Mach 1.2 at sea level. A motor grained for this thrust profile can have a 10 second boost at ~ 2460 lbs thrust and a 20 second sustain burn at 400 lbs thrust -- this is a 5:1 boost sustain ratio. This is also about right for thrust profiles of star grain vs core burn solid propellant burn rate profiles. Another rough rule of thumb:- The time it takes for a missile to lose 25% of its velocity after burn out at supersonic speeds. Never @ > 100,000 m (~300,000 ft) ; in space ~150 seconds @ 24,000 m (~80,000 ft) ~70 seconds @ 18,000 m (~ 60,000 ft) ~25 seconds @ 12,000 m (~ 40,000 ft) ~10 seconds @ 6,000 ft (~20,000 ft) ~5 seconds @ Sea Level Remember, fractions over time are not additive. In otherwords, if a missile loses about 25% of its velocity in 10 seconds, in the 10 subsequent seconds (t =20s) the missile loses approximately another 25% of the remaining 75% not a 100%. Total velocity loss is ~43.75% not 50%. This is highly collated to the fall in air density. Drag = 0.5 x P x V^2 x Cd x A. Holding everything else constant Drag falls proportionally to density. Drag also falls exponentially with Velocity which accounts for the loss in velocity in the given time slices being about 25% instead of closer to 40%. -

Me: F-15C 4x AIM-7M and 4x AIM-9M VS: F-14B 2x AIM-54A, 2X AIM-7? and 2x AIM-9L Another bout against a Phoenix laden Cat. This time i tried to win seriously. Took the eagle up high. Then under 50nm tomcat on the nose... i've waited for as long as i dare i'm sure a Phoenix was in the way, just didn't know where it is or when it was launched. A quick peek on the belly of the beast and sure enough 1 phoenix was missing(yeah i'm cheating). This is when i decided that the phoenix will be able to climb higher than i was and would probabaly still carry more than enough juice to hit home. Taking advantage of the eagle's 100 strong chaffs load. I rolled the eagle on its back Pump a good amount of chaffs and pulled hard in a vertical dive then roll the eagle into a spiral while Sporadically pumping flares. Around 10,000ft, imagination or not i thought i saw a something streak by Not knowing what it is i continued my maneuver as i don't know how many phoenix is in the air. As i got below 1000ft nose on the F-14, dive and level out around 200ft. Where now under 40nm (probably 30-35nm). My radar can now lock the tomcat and i did. lock it up and keep the bid on it. each time i stray above 300Ft my RWR came blaring and i nose down again to the water. going at 300 to 350 kts above the surface i closed in the tomcat who himself is closing in on me. Okay got to take an offensive move. hes out there probably around 2000ft high and posture for a sparrow shot even if i get close for winders the moment i bobbed my head out of the water he'll spear me with his own winder as im sure he has his nose pointed at me all the time. getting under 10nm would be close enough for the sparrows to track if he's somewhat level with my altitude. So the game begins. Nose up pump chaffs Fox 1. keep on it for a sec while the RWR blares, then dove down. I repeated the procedure until i ran out of AIM-7. Got well within winders range without being shot down and as i selected the winders i saw smoke on the horizon. One of my wild sparrows managed to hit home and as im sure he didn't save the Phoenix for last i assumed that its safe to come up for air and go home. Last Sparrow sen't out on a prayer... When i was flying BVR with the tomcat it was a routine operation fly to the target get close enough for the AIM-54's to find their target. Work out the best position lock them up and get wingmen to fire on target wait for the missile to hit home. Pick off the remaining Flights myself. In the case one Of the primary remains send one of the wingman in pursuit while flying cover. If bounced by an escort or intercept flight you still have your own set of MBVR to contend with the pursuers to let you're Unarmed wingmen escape. This usually ends with my squad in full control except only in a highly saturated airspace and i foolishly decides to furball. Never knew how much fun the opposing AI's were having. -

Yeah. took the F-15 and the F-16 against an AIM-54A ladden tomcat. it seems that until you're close enough inside 40nm for the eagle. your RWR won't know that you've been launched upon and the AI like to fire his load way before sparrow range then you'll get the warning as he's now firing the sparrows. -
