Same with the Viggen. I'm always hesitant to mount more than 2 missiles and the ECM/Decoy pods as i feel the extra weight and drag will severely hamper the performance. But it seems like the plane doesn't mind them that much. -

I wasn't actually planning to shoot that AIM-9L i was lightly tapping on the button due to boredom and it fired. haha. The first fight is always intentionally a horizontal plane to gauge the performance of the jet in contrast to the benchmark opponent. Trying to figure out the handling difference between full fuel load and when the fuel load gets low. As for the Viggen. Full fuel load and a 3rd of the fuel load doesn't have much difference. Unlike in a tomcat where significant performance is gain by using 50% fuel load. -

Glad you guys like the DACT. I know I shouldn't have them below my plane but i actually like them there as at times they pull out right dead center which means an easy kill. It's dangerous though as they can easily slow down pull a few quick scissor and they'd be on my six. Hehe. I really have to improve my gunnery. -

Things had been slow for the past few days and i've been trying to get into IL-2 due to the desire to fly in a squadron. But then i just happened to saw a vid about the Viggen and im reminded how much i liked the looks of that thing. So now i believe a few DACT reports is in order. To see how good the Viggen is i decided to pit t against the premier dog fighter... JA-7D Viggen (2x RB-24J, guns) vs F-16C (2x AIM-9J) First half Tried to turn with the Falcon... We were lock in a left hand turn and burn for almost two munites, engines to max and working on the stick trying to maintain position and energy. I lost patience and fired a missle in frustration. Kept at it decreasing speed little by little trying to find a sweet spot. 3 mins in tried my luck with the guns but no luck. I gave the viggen a bit of rudder to gain altitude. this gave me a nice look but poor weapons selection afterwhich the Viper got tired of tuning left and sharply reverses the turn. My angle was way off to capitalize. Nose low, i angled on the viper and tried manual gunnery and ended with a miss. Following the viper i fired a few which missed. Luckily, about 6mins in the fight i saw the viper making a reversal with a good enough distance for the winder to manouver... Quick tone and Fox 2! ... A sigh of relief as i finally managed to kill the Viper. 2nd fight actually took longer. Both RB24J missed in what was supposed to be an excellent firing position. But the agility of the Viper and all the flares dumped defeated both missiles. A deep breath cause its time to get close and nasty.. extended and tried to gain an altitude advantage and went vertical into a loop. on the way down the viper passed me on his way up. Went for another loop at a slight angle and then pulled hard in a right hand turn trying my best to use the high alpha of the viggen to curl inside the viper. I made it just enough to threaten the viper, there was no firing solution but the viper was forced to extend and after which reverse his turn which allowed me on a very good position at his six. Took a shot but not enough lead. Hes turning cutting the corner and im making a mistake. I was on full AB and he was going for a scissor to push me out in front. I went up and do a couple of rolls and evasive maneuvers, I saw a went by to my left but i managed to force him out in front once more cutting left just underneath my viggen. Engaged flaps and AB in an attempt to turn my viggen and regain lost energy. I dropped the viggen's nose to gain speed full AB i notd up to reposition my jet getting ready for another circle. But this time im adding some adding to use the vertical in an attempt to cut corners and preserve energy. It seems like its going to be another endless circle until one of us run out of fuel. But as luck will have it he decided to reverse his turn. He went too close that i kicked my self for not being able to get him on the cross hair when he was too big to miss. But the reversal gave me another chance as he placed his plane parallel to mine and i was inside his turn. A bit off guesswork and a couple of presses resulted in a fireball of several pieces. A gun kill, especially against a very difficult opponent is always satisfying. The Viggen has ample power and the air frame allows it to turn real tight and real sharp with really good pitch authority which can be compared to the super hornet. However, like most high alpha jet the viggen can really drain its airspeed quickly. But thanks to its thrust it can instantly gain that energy back. However the rudder doesn't have much yaw authority so adjusting the angle for a guns is a bit difficult. I find that against other fighter types the best option for the viggen is to go veritcal. Its fast and is a good climber, so you can just climb and dive against other opponents all day. (tried it against a flanker). As for the Viper, two winders and a gun is really the best configuration for it. It' truly is the best dog fighter there is and it'll really test your patience and skill any day. -

I'm interested in this as well. It's has all the elements of a hypothetical WW3 or at least a South East Asian War with Naval and Air Elements consisting of the China and alies vs Nato + south east asian countries such as Malaysia, Philippines etc. But sadly as Wrench said, no working terrain for it. -

Hi Eric. Try staying as fast as possible. The AI can handle the jet around 150kias while its quite tricky for a player especially if you don't have pedals. In my experience, going ballistic and performing a High yoyo has always yielded a better offensive position and with a 9H you dont need to be piper on target all the time. I haven't been ale to do anything as i'm stuck trying to figure out why my game crashes at times during campaigns. It happened between installing a new driver, activating nvidia shadowplay and installing a couple of Mig and F-5s -

That was really smooth flying Caesar. You were in control the whole time. I'm almost ashamed of this post as i'm chasing tail for the most part. But, hey it's already up so might as well. F-8J_69 4x AIM -9H vs Croation Mig-21BisD 2x AIM-9H Its been quite a long time since i last flew a crusader. For the most part i was trying to figure how how the gunfighter fare against the Mig-21bisD. After a couple of turns one thing is clear; the Croatian is much better and holding energy and turn rate than my Crusader. After that i made several key errors. The most prominent is just me sticking almost exclusively to the horizontal plane. 2nd mistake, is waiting for a radar lock when trying to achieve a gun solution. It takes forever for the Crusaders to get a lock, that its actually better to turn the radar off and compute the lead based on intertia. And as the fight drags on burning fuel hoping that a lighter plan can even the fight i got bored and allowed my energy to fall. Realizing my mistake i broke off and dashed to gain energy after which i decided to climb in preparation for either a loop or an immelmann. I have commited myself into the loop when i remembered that the Croatian isn't carrying Atolls. It was in fact carrying AIM-9H the same more reliable missile that i as carrying. Realizing my mistake i idled the engine in hopes of not getting rear ended by a winder. having reached the top of my loop i regained vision and true enough, i saw the missile trail with the speeding tip going my way. Luckily it shot past over my jet. Round 2. I decided to forgo getting the gun kill and settle for a winder. After botching two Shot. I was able to get a no miss position and destroyed the Croatian on the 3rd attempt. I remember reading somewhere that due to the placement of the wing; top of the fuselage with the lift centered slightly towards the rear, the Crusader has a tendency to flip and threw burner flames forward instead of aft. What this means is that, the crusader has some real high Alpha. Now the other high alpha jet i can think of is the Hornet. I would now like to challenge EricJ into taking out the Crusader and compare it with the F-18. :) -

Yeah. I had a couple of moments where i was really happy with the position and was really disappointed with the outcome. Those Atolls are about as reliable as an AIM-9B. It was fun flying a different type of plane; i especially like the thud on those Cannons. :) I just hope we satisfied the F-21 vs F-5 DACT request. -

For the last few hours before turning in and getting ready for a busy week ahead. i have decided to put those hours in SF2. So i tried two other Mig-21 model; the MF and the SMF. The Mission in the MF is in the videos above. This plane is a bit more difficult to fly than the bisD. It has a bit of a slower rate of turn and lower roll rate and i feel like the engine is also weaker. Putting 4 Atolls underneath the wing can also degrade the performance significantly. Situational awareness is a bit of a problem due to a lot of things blocking the view but the periscope mirror was a nice touch by the russians. In the end i was able to get behind the F-5 and i was able to get the kill on both occasion. On flying the SMF. Everything was a lot worst. The experience is a bit closer to what EricJ had. Even after getting an earlier advantage by dropping my nose on the merge and getting mach 1, pulling hard and blacking out to allow me swing my plane around faster; i stil wasn't able to capitalize. The F-5 made a well planned evasive maneuver and a reversal on the Scissor due to the poor roll rate of the SMF and poor energy management on my part. For the next 5 mins i was pulling pulling and jerking with everything the plane can give me while the rwr roars through my headphones. He ended up pushing me to fly below 250 knts and i knew from the way i cant pull any higher than 2.5 gs that the Mig doesnt like the slow speed. Pointed my nose down and skimmed the surface a bit trying to get my energy back up. At this point i decided to change the way the fight is being fought. I went vertical at the end of my loop i found the F-5 floating. Unfortunately, the Atolls wont lock and more unfortunately i made the biggest mistake of the fight. I didn't manage the throttle. I was in afterburner for a very very long time and i ran out of fuel just as i get the advantage. -

I knew i've seen that pit used on the 21bisD. No wonder the Gunsight was so good. now time to hit the KB for placing cockpits into stock aircraft. manage to find a Mig-21MF pit. -

Reflecting on it. I dont think your post is biased at an EricJ. I really think there might be something different between the FM of the -21 i downloaded (since its a modernized-westernized version), For one its has a delta like wing that's supposed to bleed energy real fast, but i was able to sustain a pretty decent turn rate for a very long time. I'm thinking of confirming this later on by placing a pit with the stock mig-21. -

Decided to download a flyable Mig-21 and got 5tipe's croatian Mig-21bisD which was i guess a modernized jet with a western style cockpit. I'm a bit disappointed and pleased with the plane at the same time. I was looking forward to wrestling hardships of flying an unfamiliar system but i was instead greeted with a familiar US Style cockpit and a very sweet handling aircraft. While i fee the plane doesn't like going below 300 knts and has a sluggish throttle response; the plane flies well and smooth around the upper 300 knits region. If you all would like to watch the three sets of videos. (Testing out OBS recording software) You can see that for the first fight i failed to take notice of the 2nd F-5 on my tail and got taken out. The 2nd fight was a very easy A-toll kill which uncharacteristically guided nicely all the way to the target. And lastly, tried a lot of patience opting not to take 2 earlier opportunities to take a no chance to miss hit with the 30mm cannons. https://youtu.be/zfMr1Rko73c https://youtu.be/ajFp7TZ6CK4 https://youtu.be/pZUQWVIAcSI This version of the -21 was a very capable fighter. You hold the throttle in the setting you want and control how fast and how tight you fly by virtue of the stick and rudder. It also has a nicely tuned gunsight which makes gunnery a lot easier. To be honest i think it flies too well (or maybe i just really have no idea how the Migs work) will ave to try an older version for comparison. -

Ok just flew a mission and i seem to have forgotten to add the SAM i hate the most. Grumble. The guidelines i can break lock just by diving steeply to atleast 5kft then leveling out sharply. But this thing doesn't break lock unless youre dropping from 30kft to 10ft or your 100ft on the deck. it can also be launched from as far away as 50 nm and from 1nm. It also turns on a dime and very fast. They're littered everywhere as well ( Black Sea Crisis). Had to go home again with a failed mission and half an tail section and with one engine, didn't even bother landing on the carrier as the tail hook was shot.
