Flight night?
SayethWhaaaa replied to Preacher's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I'm in. Only problem is I make a good target Organise a time and PM me. Just one thing. Make sure if everyone has the same version. If someone wants non vanilla aircraft, we all have to have it for it to work. least, that's how SFG is... Personally, default is probably the easiest way to go. The version vibe I'm getting is WOE + NATO Fighters 1&2...? Use this thread to make a list of aircraft to add in the future. -
Admittedly, my nation doesn't have carriers anymore, and when we did, I was about 2. But nonetheless, I've never seen anything as crazy as this... ...but then a mate of my who hates Flankers sent me this... The second one's not as dramatic, but it's still pretty crazy and scary to lose a flanker like that. I mean, there's plently more Hornets in the world, but Flankers... jk

A good example of what Southernap is talking about can be seen in this one. I was fortunate enough to get acquainted briefly with some observers from the USN and USMC last year and attended a talk, funnily enough about situational awareness (it was actually about operations/management of defence force assets, but sit-awareness was a large aspect of it) where we were shown a video of an accident on a US Carrier. It might have been the JFK, my memory's a bit hazy and Darwin just takes it out of me whenever I'm sent there. It'd always so damn hot!! But I just happened to see a snipet of the video on youtube. Its a bit of a nasty accident but, according to the speaker, she said was an integral part of training deck crews and damage control depts. The video we watched was about 7mins long and featured the same accident from a host of different viewpoints, unlike this 20second grab. The particular seminar was a bit of a yawnfest for me in that it had nothing to do with my dept at the time but I can see how it's important for all of the crews (flight, deck, damage etc) to understand every accident in order to refine procedure and head off any potential accidents. This accident by the way (although none of this I can confirm with references, damn lousy Darwin heat!!) was caused either by a sudden pitch down or the slight crosswind it was landing in causing ramp strike. To be honest, I'm surprised it wasn't wabed off. I know naval aircraft are supposed to land in headwinds, that kinda bugged me too. All I do remember with any certainty was that Hornet spent somthing like 8 months being re-engineered. The deck crew and the pilot were fine, despite the close shave. Great, this is gonna bug me all night now! If someone was there, or know about this in more detail, send me a PM about this. Because searching for in on the web is gonna be like looking for the proberbial needle...

JAS 39C Gripen Progress
SayethWhaaaa replied to Gux's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
This is just my humble opinion, but I'd like to see one with an arrestor hook. Gripen has exceptional STOL performance, is supposedly able to land within the length of a Nimitz class carrier's deck--UNASSISTED. Is tiny, would take up bugger all spce on deck or beneath it. Carries a tonne (figuratively) of ordinance and can cause all manner of strife this side of doomsday and still be maintained by the dude and his dog from at the local mecganic's, and, let's face it, just kicks ass all round. Personally, I'd think a carrier version of this would be awesome, but like I said, that's just my humble opinion... -

Carriers in WOE?
SayethWhaaaa replied to Preacher's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
It really is pretty straight forward. Just make sure you take it slowly and follow it step by step. It does take a little while to setup (took me about 20mins, I had no clue what I was doing really, still don't ) but with Kreelin's editor, it's much easier and you'll have the freedom to place it where you want... ...besides, when you learn it, then you can add any carrier for any side, choose which aircraft are carrier capable and so on. A lot better than simply having the single forrestal... -
Oops... My bad, here's the flanker snap. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lUtvOl9nK0 Ctrl C doesn't like to actually copy anything on my keyboard anymore I couldn't get over the yellowshirt! He gets up there!

Australian Lomac pilots
SayethWhaaaa replied to rcmacchipilot's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
I'd heard they'd run afould of the regulation restricting the use of the RAAF insignias, badges (and whatnot). I know they'd received emails about it before. But, I could never get anyone to confirm that... -
I gawd... I know a tonne of these, I've got a bunch of info on them at work... ...but I'm not sure I want to reveal too much because it'll make it seem like I NEVER get out...

I posted a shot of #5, the PLAAF Tu-4 Awacs testbed during a rant in a thread here, a long time ago...

aircraft creation
SayethWhaaaa replied to crisisloaner's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
It's always seemed like 3DSM was the way to go in terms of building models for anything but I have to warn you (as I was warned) that it can be a big, complex beast! I gave up shortly after I started learning it, but I didn't have anyone helping me out. Those links above will definately help you out, but be prepared to spent a lot of time (and a shirtload of patience) learning it. As for getting a copy, ebay's a good way to go... sometimes. I've known a few people who've nabbed a relatively cheap copy from there. But you'll get a big bugger of a discount if you're a student, or using it as part of a course. -
Mirage 2000 Query
SayethWhaaaa replied to Atreides's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Mostly prolonged development issues, professional sports and real life issues getting in the way of us flying Flankers, Mirage 2ks, Rafales, Saab Gripens and Foxhounds but progress is being made, And just going by the development photos, they're looking damn fine indeed!! I didn't include the F-22 or the F-35 in the above statement as they are quite obviously chumpy, white elephant aircraft! jk (well, only joking about the F-22. I meant that it about the F-35 ) -
Dogfights on the History Channel
SayethWhaaaa replied to Hazen75's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I normally don't like them but I saw the one about Duke Cunningham and his RIO and their furball with the VPAF's migs was pretty sweet. I'm ashamed to say I really got into it I have a link for it so I might post it in the next couple of days... -
I had trouble with the search engine here when I first started using this site (I used to be a librarian, so I kinda expected a lot from a search engine :close_tema: ), but after I spent some time playing around with it, I sorta figured out how it works... sorta But, you're right IMHO, it can be kinda awkward to use initially. I do have some suggestions that might help though you in the future though. For example, the first thing anyone new to the search engine needs to know is that your search will look for ALL references to the criteria you entered, unless specified not to. So that will include any idle chitchat, topic titles, pretty much any reference that has those exact criteria. Like you said, that can be a lot to wade through at times, so if you're looking for something to download, just have a browse of the downoads section first to get an idea of how its structured. It's very straight forward with each section being appropriately titled, you'll pretty much find what you're looking for just by having a butcher's. If you don't find it, then it's maybe time to use the search engine. The advanced search will point you in the right direction in terms of how to search (ie. more effective methods than just entering the name, or subject you're looking for). It seems to be more attuned to working as a reference serach engine (with specific tools for searching by post names, searching via times and dates etc) but you'll find this with most forums. It's mostly a matter of "asking the question in the right way" but since search engines aren't intuitive, sometimes you may have no choice but to put the question out there. We like to think that's exactly what you can do here, I mean, it's partly what a forum is about. But at the same time, it can be pretty obvious when someone hasn't looked first. One I can use as an example was a while ago, when a certain plane was released for the SFP series a there was a post asking where to find it. At the time, about 4, maybe 5 posts below the post looking for the plane was the actual post of the release of the aircraft. Most importantly, don't be backward in coming forward! There are people who can get toey if the same question is aked over and over again, but when people are joining all the time, that's going to happen (ie. the lack of an F-22for sfp). The community is here to point you in the right directon. The knowledge base will answer pretty much most aspects of using/altering the game, but it's being added to and altered all the time. But the important thing is that we don't want you to feel like you can't ask questions! When I get the time, I'll write up a pointers to using the search engine more effectively...

MIG 29 /Su-27
SayethWhaaaa replied to dast24's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Here's a link to a thread where this same topic was discussed sometime ago. It has this juicy morsel in it (actually, I think the link takes you directly to the post with this in it). Not sure on it's progress... not even sure who the author is... There was an Su-33 in dev when I came back to this site (after i grabbed a copy of SFG and this site became CA), but I'm sure it'll be a while before one's released. I'm sure I saw a photo posted, but I also play hockey and get hit around the head a bit :black eye: so I might be imagining it. Can't remember who that author was either. Have a play around with the search function with keywords like "Su-33, WIP" and variations on this. It takes a short time to get used to, but once you get an idea how it works, finding stuff gets a whole lot easier. -
Dual SAHMs?
SayethWhaaaa replied to Southernap's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I was trying to add dual Amraams to the Mirage III and came across the same thing. Still work fine though. 10 Sidewinders, good stuff!! -

I'd be down for a game. I'm in the same boat. You could organise to meet up with someone on hyperlobby or hamachi's not bad either. Trick is finding someone and when to meet up with em. -
Looking for aircraft,
SayethWhaaaa replied to Madmalamute's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Spot on. I tried the same with the Mig-25. Added co-ords for gun placement, where the shells ejected etc, didn't work because it wasn't listed as a component of the aircraft. It's kind of similar for chaff and flares. You can add them, but you need to add them as a component too. If I can find my link for it, I'll post it here. -
^^ Ouch, harsh! Who exactly is getting punished here? Her, or the USAF...?

Merry super happy fun time new year to all you Combatace crew and especially all you nuggets just now getting into the SFP series!!! Hope the new year's good to you and your families!! I'm going back to the party!! :fans:

The mig 21 "lancer"
SayethWhaaaa replied to stalkervision's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Yeah, I never got why the Sovs used to clutter up their cockpits like that! But then again, it was a common practice to have cluttered cockpits in the 50s and 60s.
