Intro To Ifr And Basic Airmanship
switch posted a topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
Excelent presentation MrMudd. I spend at least one hour a day with a Lo-Mac demo and I basicaly concentrate on controlling the aircraft throughout the entire fligh envelope. Airspeed transitions and proper trimming, stopping the roll precisely at a given bank angle, landings, climbouts (and occasional guns kill on a Mirage :P ) Regardless of someone`s knowledge or experience - reading articles like this is always helpfull. And of course, it brings out questions. I do have one quick question about power settings: in RL do you use N1 RPM% or fuel flow in PPH as primary indication. Well I know that with practice you could probably make precise adjustment just by simply "feeling" the throttles. -
"Shoot", I heard people in some "communities" talking about need for stuff like that for ages! I`m surprized it took so long for someone to come up with that idea.
-
Well, I`ve been reading about these different gizmos for voice comms that some virtual squadron are using and was wondering if any of that stuff will be used here.

Pitts S1s Flight Vs. Lomac -- General Realism
switch replied to Hawkeye's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
Yes it is. Ft. Walton Beach, Destin, Valparaiso area. Well, on a clear day I guess you could see the trailers over the ranges. There`s a lot going on in that area. Occasionally, at night you can even see C-130 Spectre gunships firing at ground and water targets (looks like the damn tracers are going up not down!) Real busy base! It`s been a while though since Ive been there. -
Hey! Cool stuff. Too bad I know nothing about online gaming. Never played anything online :( (I did on LAN though) If somebody could post a list of equipment needed and procedures for joining online gaming... I`m filing a flight plan! Just hope my hectic schedule will allow it.

Well, no comments needed here... Shoot, I just made one!

Pitts S1s Flight Vs. Lomac -- General Realism
switch replied to Hawkeye's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
Well Hawkeye, I remember one landing that I "heard" (could not see it). I was on the side of the runway 19 at Eglin,FL (10000 foot runway) when an Eagle came in - dead on center, "slightly" above glideslope. He had to take a departure end barrier. Some problem with ground equipment. Another time, I was really mesmerized watching C-5 coming in, in similar conditions. Hit the deck on "captain`s bars". :o -
Falcon Gold is (most likely) Falcon V is gonna take a while!

See what you`ve done Seawolf! Well Snapple, from what I remember you wanna be an Academy "elitist" so you don`t need to worry about the horrors of the enlisted life :D

You Can't Drop Bombs While Doing Mach, Can You?

Yea, I`m a little behind on current technology. Seawolf, can you give me a link to that Boeing vid? I tried to browse through their videos but I couldn`t find that one. -
Idea For Mrmudd
switch replied to AlphaWhiskey's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
I can see how you can get burned out dealing with adolescents. I`m relatively new to the boards (any of them) but in that short time I noticed one thing: just about all the trolling, insults, etc. come from adolescents. You can tell they are very immature or insecure (I don`t wanna be dr. Freud here!!!). There`s also plenty of arguments or discussions between more mature members, but these I can deal with. Sometimes I can pick up bits and pieces of information, some of it quite reliable. Some of these guys never miss an issue of "Aviation Week" magazine or Jane`s reports. They know your credentials and they can distinquish reality from the game. Obviously, there`s not too many people on the boards with your type of background and you can rest assured that whenever you speak, everyone listens! Some of these young folks might even have serious aspirations to become a combat pilot and I don`t think they can find a better source of motivation then a word on "real aspects" of military aviation from the guy that`s been there, done that. Yea, occasionally some silly spoiled brat will post something stupid and insulting, case and point: UBI`s board, few days ago. Some kid called your last video crappy and he was hoping to see you land on a boat! Well, I also wanted to see you come in for a hot, combat break with a good start on the ball and a "OK" on the "greenie" board! But I realize you have a life out there and from what I heard - it`s a pain to make vids with Fraps. So, summing it up - Don`t quit MrMudd!!! Lo-Mac will be released soon and the need for "reality" will be released too! A lot of people will try to fly and fight as close to real ops as they can get. And people like you can add that final touch to the sim. And as far as business part of it - well, my thick scull is not really wired for advice in that area, but I`m sure that a small incentive for the effort would not be wrong! If you or someone comes up with an idea - I`m in! Respectfully, Switch -

Where Does Your System Stand?
switch replied to Growler67's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
1043% for mine. (for Lo-Mac) 3.2Ghz P4 (800FSB) 1 Gig of Corsair DDR (400Mgz) Radeon 9700Pro 2 SATA hard drives Win 2k Pro (SP4) BTW, I hate those Microsoft machine analyzing routines! (I`ll leave it at that!) -
Joystick Setups For Lomac???
switch replied to Seawolf's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
I use Cougar with modified stick tension (all right! - it`s just a stiff rubber boot around the base of the stick) and I like minimal movements of the stick. In the Cougar Setup: Dead zones for x & y are 4% (the pots are still good) Sensitivity for x & y is set at -4 (that`s pretty sensitive) Rudder -8 (TM Pro) In Lo-Mac Setup: Dead zones for x, y & rudder - Half a notch from the left Shift for all axis - all the way to the right Sensitivity for x & y - 2.5 notches left from the center for rudder - 1.5 left from center That`s what works for me. Initially my setup was more like MrMudd`s. But after couple of hours of hamfisting the Mig and the Hog I decided to change it. The problem with that setup was insufficient pitch authority with small stick deflections. When I tried to gradually increase the pitch (especially at slow speeds) it would rapidly jump to high sensitivity. There was no happy medium. So after some experimenting I decided to use the above mentioned setup. -
Were you a pilot or RIO (or whatever they call them nowadays)?

Lock On Lighting
switch replied to ARCHER's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
In any external views, the lighting in FS2002 or 2004 looks nice. Try using the landing or taxi lights from the cockpit. All you see in front of you is a white, hazy blob. It`s very hard to distinguish any details within the lighted area! Lo-Mac is the first flight sim I`ve seen (judging from the pics and demo mods) in which aircraft`s landing lights are really useful. The lighted area is very clear. As far as any other lights in Lo-Mac are concerned - no problem there either. I don`t recall seeing formation lights lit up on any of the Lo-Mac`s aircraft pics though. Has anyone seen them? -
Sim Reality
switch replied to orgasmo1's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
If you set your cockpit angle to at least 95deg, to include some periferal vision, you`ll feel the speed! (curved screen would help too, but...) TrackIr also adds greatly to sensation of speed. I`m addicted to low level flying in Lo-Mac demo! -
Trackir And Multithreading
switch posted a topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
Just in case you haven`t read about it on Ubi`s board. If you run your TIR 1 or 2 on multithreading CPU and use driver ver. 3.01, most likely you will have problems (program crashing and so on...). There is a quick fix that some of the techies came up with. Every time after you start Naturalpoint.exe you have to set that program`s affinity to CPU 0. It will not effect any other programs running at the same time. Well, you can always disable HT in your bios setup, but this will effect every program running on your computer. To set the affinity: After opening TIR setup screen, click ctl-alt-del then Task Manager, Processes tab. Right click on Naturalpoint.exe and click on Set Affinity. In the affinity window uncheck CPU1. Only CPU0 should be checked. That`s it. It works on my system (and bunch of other people that responded). Untill the next driver is out!!! -

Hawkeye, I am considering building a rig similar to "Vista View" from Evans&Sutherland. (Check their website). The right projector and 270deg dome would be the biggest problem. Head tracking, servos, etc - relatively easy. If I ever have enough time to do it , is another matter! http://www.es.com/products/displays/vistaview/index.asp -
You Can't Drop Bombs While Doing Mach, Can You?
switch replied to assailant's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
No, you`re not crazy! He was hauling butt over Mach1 ingressing and egressing. In the pop though, he slowed down a bit. I couldn`t see the airspeed readout on his HUD or the gauge but I noticed his rpm dropping slightly when he was "in hot". And yes, he was having fun!! -
Q For Mrmudd (or Any Beta Testers)
switch posted a topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
I noticed when playing the demo, attacking ground targets is somewhat difficult. You have to get real close for some targets to show up. (especially around the airfields) That makes it difficult to make flight path corrections. Is the most recent beta better in that respect? -
Q For Mrmudd (or Any Beta Testers)
switch replied to switch's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
Thanks MrMudd - as usual, your response is very informative. Well, I should`ve experimented more with the demo settings before resorting to "ask MrMudd for all the answers" option. I thought that the Visibility Range setting refers to atmospheric visibility only. Apparently it also defines the distance at which some objects are painted. When I set it to high, it looked like a different world out there! With everything else maxed out (except the mirrors) and res. 1600x1200x32 the frame rate dropped to below 20 (flying around the cities) Obviously the demo is not optimized the way full version will be (hopefully) and with a lot more setting options. BTW, I`m using 3.2G P4 on a Abit IC7-G, Radeon9700Pro and SATA drives. -

After 3 weeks of using TrackIr, I can`t imagine flying sims without it! Mine is set with a large dead zone in the center to prevent view shifting caused by tiny movements of my head (after overdosing on coffee). It`s especially usefull when flying the instuments or staring at the radar. Yea, you can always disable TIr by hitting F9 but I like too keep it active at all times. MrMudd, I know you used TrackIr1 before they sent you TIr2. Do you see any significant difference? My TIr1 is running very smooth and I was wondering if there`s really any need to get TIr2.
