The future of SF?
beachav8r replied to streakeagle's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Yeah - they (ED) know about the AI fuel issue and it is being addressed. Regarding Thidwire and TK - there is always another component beyond profitability that I think it important to consider. Among the various curves that you could use to plot game developing, there are two that are often used to make decisions - time invested vs. profit. On the mobility platform, I'd guess that maybe those curves intersect closer to the "profitability" regime of the graph. One thing that isn't perhaps plotted is the developer's personal goals and satisfaction. Say what you will about TK - but he's been plugging away (mostly alone) at this for decades now with pretty good results. I think he takes personal pride in his work and his work actually reflects that. Yes, there are some odd design choices like Stary has mentioned regarding the apparent laziness about updating the easy things like the menu interfaces..but overall the improvement over the years have been pretty good. If I had to guess, I'd imagine that TK would *love* to round out SF2 with some of the things we'd all like to see. In my opinion, the investment into getting MP working would pay huge dividends in TK's personal pride index (LOL) because getting 8 or 12 players playing SF2 MP would be game changing in my opinion. He could re-roll out SF2 (or hell, change some menus and call it SF3!) with MP and a HUGE audience would climb aboard (I'd do everything I could to feature it prominently..that's for sure!). I mean, c'mon..how many current games are offering 8 or 12 players the ability to do an Alpha Strike in Vietnam? Or something similar in Desert Storm? Yes, I know, and have read the estimates for the cost of adding MP to SF2 - and that is certainly an obstacle. But to vault SF2 (3?) to the top of the sim genre for that - damn, make room on the shelf TK for a flight simmers version of the Oscar. Yeah, my analysis is colored by my enthusiasm for what is already in there, and my desire to see it reach that level..but I don't think it is that far of a reach. The only question is whether it is something TK wants, or if he wants to keep with the mobile platform stuff. Then again, TK (in my opinion) has already established himself among the flight sim greats: CJ Martin, Wags, Gilman Louie, Scott Elson, etc..so it isn't like he has anything to prove. BeachAV8R -

Still catching up on this thread, but I think FC hit the nail on the head: you don't want to compete with DCS World with regards to FM or systems fidelity. Why would you? The SF series has always been about the gameplay and the ability to hop into a wide array of aircraft and theaters and be up and flying within minutes instead of tens of minutes. I'm a huge fan of DCS sims, but I see no reason to strive for that with TW sims. In fact - I'd argue that DCS would probably be well served to move more toward TW type gameplay in some aspects. Not sure exactly where to put this but..but many thanks to FRPignon for getting me squared away with the Odyssey Dawn campaign. Wrote up a blurb about it on our site: http://www.mudspike.com/srike-fighters-2-operation-odyssey-dawn/ Fun campaign! BeachAV8R -

beachav8r replied to Peugeot205's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
Many thanks to FRP! That was it! Dangit..I knew it was something I probably did. I had the GroundObject folder outside of the Objects folder instead of inside of it. But just for the ships objects. I don't know how I managed to do that. So now I have the deGaulle and Rafale M working! I think I'm ready to fly. I did manually add some additional weapons capability to the Rafale M, but some of them don't appear to hang on the pylons correctly..but it is hard to notice.. Thanks for the assistance! So I have my Rafale-M loadout problems solved. The only issue remaining is that when I start the campaign using the Rafale-M, the second I get into the mission I explode because I'm spawning in on land in the middle of terrain rather than on the carrier. Any ideas on what I can do to fix that? -

Problem solved! As usual..it was an error on my part! <for shame> I did not have the Operation_OD_Data.ini file in the correct sub-directory in the mod folder. I had it simply residing in /Campaigns when it needed to be in /Campaigns/Operation_OD Sorry for the run around..I think I'm in business! BeachAV8R -
Operation Odyssey Dawn 2.0 HD Part 1
beachav8r replied to Peugeot205's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
Does anyone have a good configuration file for possible weapons the Rafale-M could carry? The default campaign ini (Operation_OD_Data.ini) gives this: Supply[001].WeaponType=M2k_RP2000R Supply[001].Quantity=40 Supply[002].WeaponType=MICA_IR Supply[002].Quantity=140 Supply[003].WeaponType=SBU-54 Supply[003].Quantity=180 Supply[004].WeaponType=PDLCT Supply[004].Quantity=180 Supply[005].WeaponType=Rafale-1250_FT Supply[005].Quantity=80 But I'd like to be able to carry a wider range of weapons..conceding that it would be historically inaccurate in exchange for a bit more excitement.. -

Hmm.. Still stymied here. I set that statement to FALSE, but the aircraft still have limited inventories. I even tried changing the aircraft inventory supply parameters but it doesn't seem to change what I have available to load: EDIT - I might have figured it out. I think maybe a lot of the weapons weren't in the objects directory..lemme see... EDIT - No that didn't do it either.. Hmm... BeachAV8R -

Also (sorry for being high maintenance) is it possible to fly the Rafale-M from a carrier - or does it always start airborne? * Edit - And the Harrier seems to sink through the ship? Man..that terrain (cities and stuff) really looks fantastic! -
Operation Odyssey Dawn 2.0 HD Part 1
beachav8r replied to Peugeot205's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
Hmm.. Yes, I downloaded the update and did over-write the files, but the ordnance choices seem extremely limited. For the US Navy Harrier the only things you can load are Sidewinders and Mavericks. For the AMX - the only things available are the Sidewinder and Mavericks. For the Grippen, the only item is the IRIS-T. The Tornado has a few more weapons, but only the BOZ-107, Sidewinder, and fuel tank can be loaded. So are these historically accurate (highly limited) load-outs or something? Or is my weapons inventory or availability messed up or something? Apologies if I'm being dense.. <g> BeachAV8R -

Just curious - I'm having the same problem (I think) that you might have regarding the weapons not showing up in the Odyssey Dawn campaign. I have the weapons pack installed, but I read a post where you said there were some entries missing from the campaign.ini starting inventory? Can you point me to what I need to do to modify that to get the proper availability of weapons for the campaign? Other than than, I think I have everything working properly.. Regards! BeachAV8R -

beachav8r replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Thanks Stary - I'm like a bad penny..I keep turning up.. <g> I like to keep checking back with SF2 development because the sim appeals to me so much. I'm always impressed by the new mods and work that is being done. I'm struggling to figure out what airframe and campaign I should fly for the proposed Dead Is Dead thread.. I love the Harrier..but it kills me regularly.. <g> Regarding my ride - yeah, flying around the east coast of the U.S. has been pretty interesting the past couple months. Snow, ice, rain, thunderstorms...the whole mixed bag. I picked up the worst clear ice of my career a few weeks ago. From the outer marker to touchdown (2 minutes of flying) we picked up a really healthy dose of clear ice that was pretty ugly. I'm ready for spring..no doubt.. Great to see you are still churning out great stuff for the series! BeachAV8R -

I never get tired of reading about the drama of that opening night. The Pave Lows escorting the Apache's to the radar sites, them opening the hole, and then the Allied packages pouring through.. Nice work... Just installed it a couple days ago, so haven't had a chance to fully explore it. But while I was flying a trip yesterday I was struck by how similar conditions at Raleigh (KRDU) were to Stary's stormy overcast.. Right on! Yeah..unfortunately no Mavericks or LGBs on my little ride..but one can try to imagine it..<g> BeachAV8R -
Good Times in SF2
beachav8r replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
That's a legit scenario. Of course, I would dream of getting a squadron of A-6 pilots to do an Alpha Strike on the Vietnam map. With F-4 cover and maybe human MiG-21 adversaries. I mean..how awesome would that be?? Pretty much you can insert whatever theater/plane/war is your favorite though and you can dream of how good SF2 multiplayer would be... Oh TK..why??? WHY!!???? LOL... (I know why - he said it would cost somewhere around $100,000 to add good MP if I remember correctly?)... Sigh..
