  1. I have an interesting question to discuss with those of you who have more knowledge about the USAF and their rules of displaying serial numbers on aircraft. I understand that generally the serial number is something like AF 98-1067, AF means "Air Force", "98" means the fiscal year and 1067 is the sequential number for the specific aircraft. The question that bothers me is: which way of displaying the number is more correct for 1990s-2000s aircraft? I've seen that on the "older" USAF aircraft there's usually a 3-digit sequential number, e.g. AF 83-120 while the most modern ones have the 4-digit sequence, such as AF 15-5202 I've made my F-23A aggressor skin pack with the 4-digit sequence painted on the tails but now I'm thinking about replacing it with the 3-digit one in order to make it look more reallistic. Any advice?
  2. I've noticed that and I'm curious whether there's any particular rule behind it.

The background story is simple: what if the USAF decided to choose the F-23 instead of F-22 and what if they bought a lot of them, enough to form the aggressor squadrons too? You need to download and install the aircraft if you want the skins to work. 5. Oh yes, that's the truth. If you don't want some crazy fictional or nearly-fictional concepts here, shut the goddamn what-if section down. Come on, there's a guy in another topic (here's to you, @Menrva ) working on the Moon, Mars and starships firing missiles at each other and nobody is ranting like this. The other guy was builiding a Death Star map. It's all for fun.

  7. Hello all! I am planning to rework the skin of Klavs81's F-35 to represent one of the most distinctive characteristics of this plane - the "zig-zag" lines on top of the fuselage which are RAM coatings covering the panel lines. The model available here on CA does not represent the panel lines quite correctly. I have a question for you: have you come across any high quality top-down view pictures of the F-35A? I only found something here and I would like to use such top-downs for reference: I would appreciate any help. Cheers kblomkvist
  8. I guess that's the reason behind putting this topic into "Sci-Fi/Anime/What If Forum"
  9. Hi! I finally started to rework the F-35B skin and I started to experience a strange problem with the decals. Look at the first picture. As you surely know, there should be the "VMFA-121" label on the side of the fuselage, the "MARINES" label on the side of the fuselage just below the horizontal stabs, and a serial number next to the "MARINES" label. For reasons unknown, they're not showing up. Here's the folder structure and contents: And here's the decals.ini: DOes anyone have an idea what's wrong here? I wondered whether there's a problem with the "Fuselage" mesh but the other decals on this mesh are showing up correctly (like the ejection warnings etc.). I even reinstalled the aircraft itself and still no joy. Maybe the .tga files are somehow corrupt but I have no idea why. The strangest thing is that the MARINES and serial number decals were working at some point. BTW, the skin itself is still WIP, some RAM coatings need serious adjustments.
  10. As you may have seen, I'm currently working on the F-35B skins, starting with the USMC. I encountered some decal problems which have been discussed in the other topic (below) and they have been solved by now (many thanks to @Wrench, @daddyairplanes, @russouk2004 for their advice). Expect some pictures soon, I will upload the mod when all the USMC operational squadrons are finished. Then, I will make some foreign skins for the F-35A&B before reworking the C skin.
  11. That's an obvious thing to do but quite hard with this aircraft if one wants it to look good. Unfortunately, the warnings and generally everything around the canopy are a real PITA with the F-35 model available here. It has a... erm... not that great texture mapping and the space to put them around the canopy is really narrow. This causes some serious bleeding and blurring or other deformation of the markings so that's why I wanted to use decals. Same with the "marines" label at the back, if you paint it on the skin, it's somehow distorted. Imagine that I wanted to add the "door" under which a refueling probe is hidden on the right side of the aircraft, below the canopy and I had to make it as a decal too. It was impossible to add it on the skin because I had too little space to draw it. You just have a tiny patch of space on your template which is then stretched over a bigger surface of the model and the effect is obvious: bleeding and deformation. Maybe I'll try with the one-helluva-big-tga idea for the whole nose and canopy area. And of course, thank you all for your support, it's priceless to have the advice from the more experienced ones.
  12. That's what I do already, the tail is just one large tga with all the emblems and numbers.
  13. Okay, that's something I didn't know. I guess I'll just paint some of these decals (like the VMFA) on the skin.
  14. Both skins are really cool! Could you release them?

I downloaded it using my other PC and opened with Winrar. It works fine, so I have no idea why this happens to you. Is your Winrar up to date? Maybe try some different program to open the archive.
