Is it possible to change your skin in a non-mercenary campaign?

I spent some time making a personalized for my pilot today and I realized I wan't able to change my skin. Anyone know of a way to change it?

I believe you need to have your pilot be a higher rank before you can change the aircraft skin or tail number in a campaign.

That exactly it! Let's take the USAF ranking for example :

 

From a certain rank (think is captain), you can change your plane number but not the skin.

When on the rank of major (not sure) you can change both.
