What's the difference between the original templates from the modeler & ones you make yourself from the planes bmp???

A template had multiple layers that the skinner uses to create the end product, one layer could be the rivets, another could be the weathering, etc. It is not unusual to have 10+ layers in a template. Usually they are done in PaintShopPro or PhotoShop. Also the template could be 4096x4096 or better to get better resolution. I imagine a complex template could be upwards of 50Mb or more

 

The texture that you see in-game is usually reduced to 1024x1024 or better but usually not higher than 2048x2048. I also think the file is flatten into one layer only.
