+Fates Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 http://www.abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=3556710 BAKERSFIELD - The Civil Air Patrol is searching the Nevada desert for billionaire and world-famous adventurer Steve Fossett, reported missing Monday night. The 63-year-old reportedly did not return from a flight in a small plane. He took off from an airstrip near the community of Smith Valley in Douglas County. That's just across the California-Nevada line, almost due east of Sacramento. He was flying a single engine Citabria Super Decathlon. The CAP said its search has begun, and will be broadened as soon as more planes can reach the area. The search will cover hundreds of square miles. In 2002, Fossett became the first person to fly around the world alone in a balloon. Three years later, he became the first person to fly a plane solo around the world without refueling, according to the Associated Press. He was in Nevada to try to break a land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats; his aim was to go 800 mph on land. Quote
