Has anyone else managed a PIO in WOI?

Recommended Posts

I was flying an A-4E Ahit on an airbase attack. Being use to hamhocking my aircraft around the sky in the previous versions of this sim, I overdid a roll off of the target when some tracers came in my direction. Milliseconds later I was heading for a dirt nap. Rolled opposite, overdid it again, and was now under a hundred feet, upside down, about to beat it into a plowshare. I endured two more of these rolling PIO's before I finally got it under control, inverted, less than fifty feet, heading for a hill near the target. With a soft negative g push, I stabilized the aircraft, and gently, gently, rolled upright, then pulled up over the top of the hill, calling my wingie to rejoin. As he joined up, I could, in my imagination, hear him say, "Scared the S*** out of yourself. Didn't you lead?"

Jerk.

It's a whole new world, my friends.

The first time it happened to me was after we got the first beta, I was flying the Kurnass coming off of a strafing run over an Egyptian airfield. I had quite a bit of alpha on the plane, used the aileron to roll off (a big no-no in the F-4) and wound up in an inverted flat spin from which I barely recovered. I knew that WOI was about to be a smash at that point. :)

A spin happened to me in Mirage III, fought eternal seconds (well, they looked like eternal) recovering from it.

Thought it was just me since I managed an approach turn stall in an A-4. The flight modeling now is very entertaining.
